I sure would like to know who's offering 1.8%.

I bank with Rabo Bank here on the West Coast and have been a customer for over 20 years. I truly feel like I got a great deal. I have been paying a lot more for the last 10 years. Who knew my local bank could have saved me so much money over the years? I'm not sure if being a customer helps but it may.

I have a store and have run the gambit with credit card companies. Currently I am using my bank. I found they are offering the best rate. My Square is linked to my store terminal so I get charged the same amount as my regular processing. Currently 1.8% I believe and I have no monthly fees. It is really worth it to do a lot of research. Also seriously consider purchasing your equipment if you are planning on having it for more than a year.

Picker's Paradise / Auction house score this week
« on: April 23, 2013, 03:24:20 PM »
I was at the local auction house this weekend. Lots of people but prices were not bad. Anyway this vacuum comes up and I have a friend that had asked for me to keep a look out for one. Figured if it went cheap what the heck. I'm not a vacuum snob. I will by whatever is cheap and works. No one wants it so I pick it up for $5.00. All of the attachments and a large box full of bags. I get back to the store and start looking through the box. This thing is an Electrolux and the invoice is in the box. Someone paid $1138.67 for this vacuum in 1998! Needless to say my friend is not getting it and I have become a vacuum snob. Not making any money on this one but the floor in the store looks great.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Liquidity

There are no wrong answers to this question. I think it depends on how and where you sell. For me with a retail store I want the large units. The more furniture the better. Most buyers in my area sell at the swap meets. They tend to go for the smaller box units. Most of my purchases are made on one or two good large items. I bid according to what I know I can make off of them and everything else should be profit. Not to say I haven't bought several small units but I find for my situation that there is usually more profit in the bigger units for me. With everything there is a learning curve and some risk. You just have to find what makes you the most money.

Checked my schedule this morning. More of the same Cancel, cancel. Looks like I either have to do some real traveling or find some really good picks for the first half of May as well.

Crappy month here. Three sales so far. Canceled, canceled and one crappy unit. Bought for $150.00 by another regular. The manager wouldn't take any less than that. Nothing else until May. I've been doing some picking to help keep up inventory in the store.

I talked to a guy that called on a unit after it didn't sell at auction. The unit was a 10 X 20 with crap just thrown in (real mess). It was also in a small hallway that reeked of pot. I have seen worse units sell for over $100.00. Anyway this guy offered to clean it out so they didn't have to pay someone. Facility owner let him. He said there were several good things under the mess and he made over $700.00. I remember his saying there was an antique small dresser and some kind of a pocket motorcycle.
I have also seen a few times while paying for my unit people say they don't have the money. The majority were held over until the next auction.

Storage Auctioneers / Re: Auctioneer Makes Up Laws As He Goes
« on: March 21, 2013, 01:59:57 PM »
Alot of facilities around here do their own auctions. Either the manager or the owner does the auction. We have one auctioneer that I dread having to go to. He has only been selling storage units for about a year but has picked up alot of facilities. The last auction was 11 units (most were garbage) and about 50 people. The auction took over three hours. There is no organization. When he opens a unit it is chaos. People pushing and shoving, no lines. Then he starts a $20.00 unit at $100.00 and tries for several minutes before he will come down to a reasonable starting bid. His wife even brought the previous owner of the locker I purchased over to plead for some of his stuff back. Unfortunately I am in a small area and I don't have alot of options so I have to keep dealing with him.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Re-purposing
« on: March 14, 2013, 09:48:06 PM »
Always... some of my best selling pieces are re-purposed. You have to get used to thinking outside of the box. Once I got a hutch that went on top of a desk but no desk. Turned it upside down put legs and a top shelf on it. Piece of garbage for most sold for $150.00. Old dark wood dinning table top with no legs got attached to an end table that the top was messed up on and became a coffee table. Sold for $75.00. Again most people would have thrown both away. My modo Recycle, Re-purpose, Reuse.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How do you sell used watches?
« on: March 11, 2013, 02:11:29 PM »
I sell vintage jewelry on Etsy. Wrist watches sell there OK. I haven't done a bulk sale there but lots do so I assume when I get enough I will just list them there as well. For all of my pocket watches I have a buyer that come in. I just bought batteries yesterday at Harbor Freight 24 for $3.99 assorted.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Box of rocks
« on: March 11, 2013, 12:02:56 PM »
If you live near the beach a box of rocks comes in just about every locker. I have created a rock garden with all of the rocks and sea shells from the last couple of years. I usually don't have a problem selling the shells but here lately I have collected over 20 large abalone shells. They sell but not as quick as some of the others.
I have gotten a couple of boxes like the one you found. I have a local guy that is the president of the local rock hounds. He gives me great info and helps me price them. They sell really well. Right now I have several fossils up for sale. They won't last long. Good luck with yours and if you need info find a rick guy in your area. I have found that they usually love to talk about rocks.

Stores / Re: Do you have a brick and mortar store?
« on: March 08, 2013, 03:02:40 PM »
People tend to spend more money when they have been tasting vino all day. LOL I'm working on some brochures to put in several wineries that I am friends with. Having a store is all about marketing and advertising to the right people. It's alot of work but it is what I have done all of my life and I love it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How do you sell art?
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:56:05 PM »
I'm finding expensive art to be hard to get rid of. I bought a unit the first of the year that has become know as the "art" unit. It had several very expensive pieces in it. A Fredrick Remington bronze statue worth $5000.00, two John Stobart lithographs worth $700 and $900, two Thomas Kinkades that I have yet to set a value on, 4 hand drawn maps from 1882 worth between $150 and $300 each, and two John Eastmans worth $150 each.
At this point I have put together a slideshow and e-mailed it a couple of weeks ago to several auction houses around the state. I have yet to get any replies. I have also been thinking about contacting some of the local art galleries to see if they would be willing to do a consignment on a few of these pieces.
This unit was a major score and I have made scads of money on it. I don't have to get full value on these items but I am not going to give them away. I also feel that I can hold on to them until the right buyer comes along.
