OK, last day of the month and posting the last of these spreadsheet shots.

The stats area of the forum shows an average of just below 24 posts a day, so the figures for the last four weeks
definitely show a decline from that...considering that the stat average from the forum covers something like two years of averaging.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Bought my First locker the other day
« on: June 29, 2012, 05:58:08 PM »
Well, you ask a few questions...I'll try to answer them.

IMO...

You have bought one locker so far and you did fine. You paid yourself about $25 an hour and that's fine.
There were some gas expenses but we don't know what those amounted too...maybe not much, but something.

Once you have bought between 10 and 25 lockers you will have a better idea about this business. Maybe the $50 profit per locker will work for you, and if it amounts to a $25 per hour return, that's great.

BUT, it will take a while to win those lockers, they won't all pay as well (some may pay better) and you'll start accounting for expenses like gasoline as well as your time. Depending on locations that could add up. Also, remember that there will be some auctions where you won't buy anything and you still will have paid for gas and you still will have used your time. Your pay per hour on those occasions....a negative amount which will come out of your wallet.

Not everyone is in this business for the same reasons. Sure, people like making money, but there is often more to it than that...anticipation of making a good score for one, and excitement when a big score is made is another.

If I was just in it for the money I would sell 4 or 5 days a week instead of the one day a week I do sell. I would be buying more (indiscriminately ?) and selling more and making more trips to the dump. So, hard to answer that aspect.
Do what works for you.

Anyway, welcome to our world and enjoy it.

Was going to an auction today and looking forward to it as I have done well at that location.

Yep...CANCELLED !   Bummer, but there are always more upcoming.

Meanwhile, I hit up a Salvation army  as-is auction and got a whole shelf of electronics for $5 and after getting out
the half-dozen items I wanted gave the rest to another guy so I didn't have to do the work. (shelf is 4 feet wide by 2 feet deep and stacked 3 feet high).

A new face appeared on SW on 6/26/2012, Jeff Jarred.  The link below takes you to an article published on the internet which looks at both Dave not being there and some controversy over Jeff using a handicapped parking spot.

This kind of excitement is just what the show is looking for to continue high ratings.

Since Jeff appears in the preview for the July 10 show....he might be the new Dave Hester!! ??? ???

Guess they need a "bad guy" - but HOLY CRAP - enough with all the corny, hokey sayings and comments!!

Don't care for Jeff myself and apparently some others don't either. See link below which is an article published on the internet.  I am also posting it in the "In the News" threads here on the forum.

Missed 3 of 5 auctions today as I was out of town on other business.

First one I got to had about 30 or so people with about 6 or so regular bidders. Good crowd, mediocre lockers (except for one) and decent prices for what they were. One was a 10 x 20 PACKED top to bottom, left to right and we assume all the way back. I would have liked it for $400 or so as it was a total mystery. It went for $1,050 to a couple who have been buying a few lately.

Next auction had 4 lkrs. Nothing special for me. Crowd and prices OK. One was a 10 x 30 (we were all waiting for) but turned out to be hundreds and hundreds of dining room chairs from a restaurant. Couldn't see much else but you could see floor to ceiling chairs front to back. It went for $1,250...NOT TO ME !  At the last 10 x 6 there I just left without waiting to see what it went for.

Good news though was that both that route and another (same auction outfit...different auctioneers) were sporting decent size crowds. Several regulars speculating that we might be coming to the end of the tv influence.

Craigslist / Re: CL iPad app

I have heard people say they like to photo and post merchandise staight from the unit before they move it or just leave it there and sell from the unit to save time. I never really understood this because everything I get needs to be inspected, cleaned, & researched before I post it for sale. There are very few things I find in a unit that are "ready to sell" the way they are found.

If I rent a purchased lkr for the first month ($30 deal) it would be because of quantity involved and shortage of space in other places I store items, and I definitely photograph items there after checking them out. Most of the spots I would rent are large lkrs and have electricity for checkig items.

Since I don't have a smartphone or an iPad with a camera, I really can't comment on the quality or capabilities of their cameras, but I know for the kind of photos I place on eBay/Clist that the macro capability is important. As I said before I might post 3 to 20 photos in a listing and they are all done with html within the text, not using the standard approach provided by eBay/Clist.

My best camera can focus as close as 10" on a label on a motor, a box, etc. Having a photo which can show the texture in a canvas bag (as an example) is important to me. Sometimes I have to NOT use a picture because too much detail is shown...no one in real life can see the tiny imperfections that a real close-up shows.

So aside from the "convenience" factor of the phone/iPad shots, I'll stick with what has worked for me.

*****

On a similar note my daughter who is going to China on a two-year teaching assignment tells me that her iPad with a camera can easily connect with Skype to other iPads through some super-connect program that dials directly to other iPads, where she and I have to have some pre-arranged agreement for a Skype call to my web-cammed laptop. THAT would seem to be a real advantage to a mulit-purpose device.

*****

I guess I am just old-school when it comes to having dedicated devices for dedicated purposes. On a hike my camera with 10x optical (and much-more digital) zoom can take a quite close-up picture of an animal at some distance; I doubt a cell-phone cam can do that, though for "snap-shots" it can't be beat.

I downloaded the free clist app...has a clean look, and for my use perhaps a tad easier than going through Safari, but not a biggie for me.

The eBay app (free) has recently been overhauled and imo is a pretty nice app; I use it the most for researching prices at flea market, estate sales, etc and for checking on my items which are close to ending or need a question answered.

Episode #1 tonight....
Now the values are on par with Auction Hunters.

New buyer (taking Dave's place ?)....Jeff.....doesn't impress.

Episode #2 tonight.....

Jeff...wants a level playing field.....wise up chump...it's every man for himself and the auctioneer plays favorites !

We have several auctioneers who "didn't see" that last bid that buyer "B" placed, so buyer "A" gets the lkr.

Jeff ?  :P (rasberries !)

Barry: flies to Vegas to check out his car parts...price will be so inflated he won't lose money this time..or will he?

Next new episodes, July 10, 2012.

I haven't used it in a couple days. Once i list on the app then I use my cpu to renew or delete.

OK, but can you enlighten me on:

1) why you use the iPad to list (instead of your home computer)
2) why you would then later use the home computer to renew or delete

Still trying to figure out the advantage for folks of posting from an iPad or phone.

One of my friendly competitors almost makes a science of gettig lkrs with appliances....maybe because the sides of his 20 foot box truck say "Maytag" and have a pic of the Maytag man !

Anyway, he gets a lot of them and typically sells ones like you described in the $400 to $500 range. It's a hell of a lot easier to ask a price and come down than it is to ask a price and go up !  ;D

BK was a total turn off for me. I could be wrong but the whole thing just screamed "scripted" to me.

No doubt about it being scripted...they couldn't put 5 trades together like that without planning it.

Next time I'll watch to see the continuity of the clothing they're wearing. BUT, even if scripted the idea is still interesting to me...to the extent they carry it.

If nothing else it got me more interested in bartering. Any I've done in the past has always involved some exchange of cash as well (to one person or the other) and I think that is probably par for the course.  I doubt I would ever be able to trade something straight across...one or the other person is bound to feel shortchanged if something doesn't accompany the trade.

NOW, I have sweetened a pot by throwing in an extra item to get the trade I want, but when you consider that sometimes the stuff we get costs next to nothing, that's not a big deal necessarily if the item hasn't sold for cash otherwise.

Just wanted to throw out that the CL iPad app sucks.  Use to work but after new update.....

Nope, I don't use it, but I don't use the eBay app for iPad to post either. I use both for looking at my sales and for looking up something I am interested in at the moment, but FOR ME, I can't imagine using EITHER of them for posting or for buying. ( I should say I use clist from Safari on my iPad...I don't have the app).

I guess I am just old school, but I like the more secure and solid feeling I get from doing postings and buyings from my home computer.

I have wondered why people would post a sale item on eBay (or Clist) when it could be done later at home. Maybe users here can answer that.  I have seen listings on eBay that say "posted from my Android" as an example.

Edit:

The only reason I can imagine is that with some iPads (and the smartphones), you can take a picture of the item and post it from a remote location away from one's main computer.

In the 8 plus years I've been selling on eBay (and Clist) I have posted almost 1000 items for sale and each item has an average of 10 pics (some have 3 some have 20). At $.15 per picture (and 10 pics each per 1000 items) that's $1,500 I've saved in picture costs BECAUSE I use HTML to publish the pics WITHIN the listing, not in the usual eBay style.  Using that approach from my iPad would be a stretch I'm sure. (and my iPad doesn't have a camera !)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Coins....Barber Dimes
« on: June 25, 2012, 04:41:56 PM »
Dang it - how did I miss this post.  Sorry Movieman I got busy w/ RL and didn't check for old post.

You have someone a super deal.  You had about $15 worth of dimes in G-4 condition.  Silver value about $2 per dime.  I'd of bought those for the $5.  Oh well - teach me to check forums more often.

Are we talking the same dollar amounts here?

I sold EACH of the four coins for $5 for a total of $20.

One of them went to a guy across the way from me and he resold it for $7 to a dime collector customer of his.

The other 3 went to another fellow because the first guy had passed on them. None of the four was in great shape.

I was happy with the $20....came out of the $1900 locker I bought May 9, 2012.

Or you do like me and have a number of so/so or blah jobs that you need to do but keep putting off.

Look up procrastination in the dictionary and you will likely see a picture of me as a prime practictioner.

Today I packaged and delivered 2 items to UPS store and that's the sum total of "productivity" from 8 a.m. to the current 2:30 pm Pacific time frame.

Just can't get motivated today.
