Have you seen this video- Over 500,000 views. There are some swear words as this video was sent to me this morning.

The SW episode in which the boxes are unopened (then opened) was talked about in several threads maybe a year or more ago.

The video clip you show in the link is a great example of the vulgarity used by an unfortunate number of people, most of which are younger (and/or) just uneducated in the "rules" of simple civility.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Won bid then denial purchance
« on: June 19, 2012, 10:07:21 AM »
I have NEVER heard of a no sale because the bid was too HIGH!! Movieman will have to chime in as to the California laws and the rationale behind these denial of sales.

Well, I have heard of a no sale because bid was too high...from Public Storage here in California.

Maybe a year ago PS had a policy that if a bid was higher than $1,000 the auction for that unit would stop and it would go up for sale again the next month (unless the former lkr owner paid up...one last chance).

Apparently the rationale on this was that PS would then be adding on another month of non-payment fees to the frm lkr owner's deadbeat account....AND  the thought was that if (at the current auction) the former owner only owed $500 on the bad account that they would be sending him the balance of the amount over that $500 and they didn't want to do that !  (this from a former regional manager).

ANYWAY, they no longer do that. The locker I bought May 9, 2012 for $1900 was at a Public Storage. I actually talked to the frm lkr owner and he DID GET that overage from the sale of his locker. He owed $900 and got the $1K overage from PS. He said he wanted to use some of that refund to buy some of his stuff back, but of course he never did. He and his wife are living in a weekly/monthy rate motel.

*****

Some years ago (maybe 5) at an Extra Space, I paid $800 for a locker and got the number of the frm lkr owner to see if he wanted to buy back some of his better tools. He thought he was hot s**t since he told me he only owned $400 and would be getting a $400 refund. He also said "Good luck selling my Mac and Snap-On tools; they all have my name etched on them."  I told him that was not a problem for my buyers..and it wasn't. He got his $400 overage back and I tripled my investment so we were both happy.

In California (and many states) that is the case. Frm lkr owner gets any overage over what was due. If they can't find the frm owner that money stays in an escrow account for one year and then goes to the state/county.

I imagine at a mom/pop facility that money finds its way somewhere else !

Garage Sales / Re: First yard sale this year
« on: June 18, 2012, 10:07:43 AM »
I think having yard sales will be my primary market and the flea market secondary.

How many yard sales can you have a year?  In my area it is 2 a year. If you are in a neighborhood where they don't care about the traffic, parking, people movement you could probably have more, but this is one reason I don't do yard sales...my neighbors wouldn't go for it.

I also live in a small cul-de-sac with a subsequently small front yard  and driveway is in the back, so just doesn't work for me.

On the other hand the flea market is wide open, has a regular large crowd and has done well for me over the years, so am sticking with it. I pay by the month, but don't have to go if I don't want to, but so far the only time I miss is when I have a planned vacation and usually then, I only miss one Saturday by taking a 10 to 13 day vacaction.  The only other time I miss is when it gets rained out, and I get a "rain day" credit for that 5 times a year which has always been enough.

The "rain day" has now been named a "vacation day" and again I can take up to five a year (total rain or vacation) and it has worked out well. One year we had 4 rain days in about two months, but that was unusually high.

Though everybody and his brother (almost) has an inflated idea of the value of "their" stuff, bargains are still found at garage/yard sales in my area. It's the "estate" sales that often have inflated prices.

Very un-scientific feeling is that over the last month or so there have been 5 to 10 posts a day.

This could bode well for our business though it has always been true that of the over 2000 members only 10 to 25 have posted with any regularity and even those who are frequent contributors often bail after about 3 months or so.

Flea Markets / Celebrating my 400th time selling at a flea market !
« on: June 15, 2012, 08:26:25 PM »
Gotta count for something...."stick-to-it-tiveness" if nothing else.

First flea was 1/31/2004.

Will do some math on the stats later and update this post.

EDIT:
Unless my math is wrong this means:

I have sold at a flea for 8.38 years as of June 16, 2012 and have
sold 47.73 times per year on average.

I need to get a life !

I think we have seen this story already.

Your thinking is correct.

I should of jumped on a computer / boxes / totes unit but got worried when 5 of the totes were all pirated movies.  The equipment was designed to burn multiple copies of DVD/CDs at once.  Unit sold for $300.  I was interested in the computers to scrap as they looked old but worried about all the pirated crap.  Guy said laptops were in the totes.  If so he just found a sleeper unit IMO.

And how did you know the 5 totes were pirated movies BEFORE the bidding began?

Was it because of equipment with 5 DVD burners stacked one on the other or something like that?

I was going to use an Edward R. Murrow reference, but I figured most wouldn't know who he is..... ??? ???

2nd half hour...

Only highlights:

Darrel bids against his son...and takes the lkr. Gets a scuba device that pulls you through the water.

Dave bids everyone up and goes home empty  handed.

Barry bids high against Dave...gets glass eyes...for dolls ? Value from expert: $0.00.

Jarrod and Brandi...paid $1350...they get....bedroom set, dining table, couch, dishes, not looking good for the doofus, but WAIT....nope, no biggies !

So, the wars continue with us or without us !

2095
First half hour on 6/12/2012…

A room with a view….you can see through a window to the outside..Barry gets it.

Second lkr..antique items. Jarred…sick as a dog…jumps in against Darrel at $3K.
Dave gets it at $4.1K.

Third lkr…Jacuzzi showing. Tools…let the battle begin.

Darrel is an idiot…after all these years he doesn’t realize that none of us can control what kind of lockers come up?  And he didn’t seem to bid on anything for any length of time.

If you recorded this with a Tivo or other device, catch Brandi revealing her TRAMP STAMP at 16” into the show (right after the boat compass shows). They end up getting a lot of old navigational equipment (reproductions but worth something).

Barry finds…..the view is nice. Gets into tubs. Oh yeah…tools for ice sculpting by chefs!
Got one of those just last week ! Expert says….$1500.

Dave looks over a good looking bronze statue. Overvalues everything he touches. He paid $4100 and estimates it at $7.5K (maybe ?) Bronze statue..expert says…$3500.

Going to Tivo the 2nd half hour and review it later.

This is the first episode of this I've seen. Kind of interesting.

Premise is to trade up (multiple times) some item worth not much (for first level).  There are three guys (I think) who are sort of partners and compete against each other a bit for the best trades.

The one I remember is 2 Elvis gold records (value $250) through about 5 trades ended up with a $10K (or so) speed boat. None of the guys want to lay out any money...straight barters.

This show is on BEFORE Storage Wars.

...it's a pretty good sign you can't afford the locker if you name keeps showing up in the Legal Notices.......

AND....it's a very good sign for buyers that after that lock has been cut 4 times that the frm owner had lots of opportunities to take out the GOOD stuff.

I followed one of these guys through 3 cycles. The first time it came up the mgr told me (because we are on good terms) that it had multiple Snap-On toolboxes in it. He paid up once, twice....third time it came up for auction.

Pop the door...nothing but the usual crapola !

".....and that's the way it is......."    8) 8)

Walter Cronkite was one of only a handful of newsmen who really told it like it was....or is.

2099
Im submitting and article. Look for it in your local news......

"Talking to the manager of xyz storage about the impact of Storage Wars on his business. He states that turn out is less now than after but still more than before. Bids are tending to be higher but lower than before, after, but still higher than before.  Some guy standing outside the facility agree's"

Well, it's not "news" but it's FUNNY !

2100
That's the state of our news?  Guy goes talks to one person, has no facts, writes six sentences, doesn't really say a damn thing and it makes "news"?

This is one case where "no news is good news" really makes sense !
