Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: The weirdest place you found money?
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:30:58 PM »
Found $60.00 in a birthday card. Only wierd because it was still there. Locker owner was the Grandma and card was addressed to the grandson. Guess she forgot to give it to him.  Another time I found a check in a birthday card for $1000.00 from a mother to her son. Check was decades old. Recently found a couple gold coins in a sock. It was a tube sock, with a knot in it and a little baggie of coins in the toe. That was a fun day! I've never found money in a bible but I always check. Have found cash in pockets several times so I try to always check the pockets. Found $20.00 in ski pants once and another $20.00 in a golf bag. Just found $1 in a frame with the name of a business and a message that it was the first $1.00 with millions to come. I'm guessing that didn't work out.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: I can see the Walls, really.

Sell the silly beanie babies on Ebay. Assuming they are in clean unused condition with tags attached. Still not worth much but you can sell them in batches and make a few bucks. I had a couple huge totes full and broke them out into batches of similar ones (all bears, all reptiles, all birds, all jungle creatures.....). Ended up making a couple hundred dollars. No where near what they cost in the first place but they just are not worth the space they take up. If they are not in new condition with tags attached just donate them.

Garage Sales / Re: Garage Sale Pricing
« on: July 30, 2013, 07:44:33 PM »
I generally price every item unless it is one of many similar, like DVD's or clothing. Those items are all priced the same indicated by a sign like "All blue jeans $2.00 a pair"

Garage Sales / Re: Top 10 Reasons Garage Sales Fail
« on: July 30, 2013, 07:39:38 PM »
Location. I am very picky about which areas I will go to for a garage sale. Sorry but it's true.
Pricing. It's a garage sale, price it to go. Don't tell me it's worth $100 dollars because you have seen it listed on Ebay for that much. And definitely don't print out the ad and attach it to the item.
Set up. If I drive up and see mountains of clothing, toys, etc on the ground I pretty much keep on driving.
Volume. It you only have enough stuff to fill a table or two, invite some friends to bring their stuff and make it a group effort.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Who is this guy ? !

I know who he is. Well I know who they both are but I am assuming you are talking about John and not Dave. And the shirt is orange, he wears it often...and yes its a bit snug.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Might buy hoarder house contents
« on: July 16, 2013, 09:04:27 AM »
Well we countered with a more reasonable amount and after a brief discussion they accepted graciously and all was well. Unfortunately after all that the estate owner won't budge on his asking price and no deal will be made with him. He wants 25k and just keeps saying he is sure the contents are worth 25k! Our last offer was 12k. We would have come up another couple thousand but he made it pretty clear he isn't going to budge. He said he would put it on the curb before he would accept an offer so small. OK dude good luck with that. I'm sure we could easily sell enough from this estate to make the 25k but we don't do this to break even! I'm a little sad because it would have been a fascinating adventure but a little relieved too because it would have been so much work. Guess I'll go buy a storage unit....

So, haven't come to an agreement with the estate owner yet but have been talking to our 'partners'. Getting a little tense already due to the fact that we have the truck and trailers, property to store the stuff, and time availability. They are not storage buyers, by the way. They have a small antique shop so I do not think they have experienced processing a massive amount of stuff like this. Heck it's probably 10 times more than we have ever processed.  We asked about how much time they were going to be able to commit to this project which will most likely take months. Got a reply something like "you wouldn't even have known about this if it weren't for us calling you", which is absolutely true. We assured them that we were not trying to crowd them out but just don't want to commit to a 50/50 partnership and then have to do more than 50% of the work and have to store everything for months and months. Next we get another call from them offering to bow out of the deal altogether but want a substantial finders fee. We are happy with paying a fee but need to negotiate the amount. Any opinions on that? They don't really have any leverage since they can't do it without us but we absolutely want to be fair. Maybe a percentage of the proposed purchase price? The figure they suggested is almost 20% of the purchase price. I was thinking more like 5-10%.

Picker's Paradise / Might buy hoarder house contents
« on: July 14, 2013, 08:28:46 PM »
Interesting opportunity has come our way. A friend was approached by someone that has a full house that he wants to sell the contents of so it can be sold. It was too much for our friend and his partner to deal with so we were given the opportunity to partner up for the deal. The word hoarder was used. Apparently the man inherited it from an elderly lady friend who had no heirs. She was 92 and had lived there for 60+ years.  A little scary and two hours from home but we figured it was worth a try. I googled the address and the house is 1240 sq. feet. Nice neighborhood.  We went to see it today. OMG!!!!!! Yes you could call her a hoarder. But good news is she was a very clean hoarder. More like a collector really. No trash. Just stuff....everywhere. Boxes piled along all walls so walkways are narrow. The guy selling it has done some sorting and has removed clothing but not much else. Lots of figurines, trinkets, antique clocks, cast iron door stops, figurines and bookends, paintings and prints, furniture, very few books (thank God!), two big bins of jewelry (mostly costume but some sterling), depression glass, antique microscopes, antique opthomologist glasses set with all the lenses, lots of antiques and vintage stuff....I could go on and on but I am still so overwhelmed I can not even wrap my mind around it. The owner says no rush to get the house empty. I'm thinking it will take a month at least. Another thing that freaks me out is the whole partner thing. How in the world can you split something like this?
This is going to be a long process, not just to empty the house but to sell all the stuff. Also our friends don't have trucks or trailers (we do) or a place to store the stuff (we don't really but could make it work). Oh and did I mention that in addition to the 1240 sq foot house, there is a guest house, a garage with attached room, and another storage building that is probably another 1000 square feet. All full of stuff.

Speaking of boobs / cleavage on the show, I'm pretty sure that no one even knows what Rene's wife/girlfriends face even looks like. They are just taking up the whole screen.  I also noticed that Nabila was showing her's off pretty prominately a few episodes back. You gotta give Brandi credit for not going that route. She's obviously got plenty but keeps em under wraps. (so far) lol.

That is surprising that he uses "Storage Wars" in his ad. In person he never mentioned the show. The only item even remotely related to the show was his Yuuup hat. I just assumed he had a gag order of some type.

I sell brand name or nicer stuff on Ebay. Baby clothes in lots on Ebay. Occasionally jeans in lots on Ebay. Otherwise I save all jeans, shoes and nicer jackets or sweatshirts for future garage sales. Everything else goes to the Goodwill or is given away. Only do 2 or 3 garage sales a year so anything that doesn't go in the garage sale is also given away. Too bulky to save stuff like that.

eBay / Re: Appropriate amount of time
« on: July 11, 2013, 03:19:04 PM »
Seems odd that the shipper could have printed the label and not taken the package to the post office for a while. I believe the post office requires the package to be received the same date as printed on the label.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How do you sort?
« on: July 10, 2013, 10:27:06 AM »
Most of the time just load everything in the trailer (huge enclosed trailer). Get it home home and park it next to the dump trailer. Sort box by box and make piles, trash and unsellable stuff goes right in the dump trailer, obvious stuff of value is pretty much photographed and listed where appropriate as it is uncovered (Craigslist, Ebay, Amazon), questionable stuff is piled up to research later, flea market / garage sale stuff is boxed up and stored until the next garage sale, and give away stuff is boxed and either taken directly to Goodwill or we have a person we can call who will come haul it away to sell. We also call that same person at the end of the day after a garage sale and give him all the leftovers. We do not attempt to garage sale anything more than once. Oh, and there's usually a recycle pile also. Used to try to sell brass stuff at garage sales (candlesticks etc), now they pretty much all go in the recycle boxes.

I often wonder if I would buy high priced brand name items like louis vuitton bags if money were no object. They are not even attractive and knocked off so much that no one would bat an eye seeing it anyway. One of my daughters had a friend in high school that was given a small louis vuitton clutch for her birthday by her parents. She carried the receipt in the bag just so she could show her friends that it was 'real'. $1500! Ugh

I went to a storage auction recently with Dave Hester as the auctioneer. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how he did as an auctioneer. If I didn't know his history I would not have known he was a 'Former TV Star' at all. The units were not good so he didn't have much to work with. It was very evident that he has had a lot of experience with storage units and knew what to say to encourage bids. He did manage to get $400 for a unit full of trash bags and $60 for a unit with some dirty used mattresses so gotta give him credit. He knew how to spot the bidders and didn't waste time trying to squeeze out more bids if a unit wasn't going to get them. I think he is popping up all over the state to gain accounts so I wouldn't imagine he will be in my area again but if he was I wouldn't hesitate to attend his auctions.
