Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2...February, 2013

Two facilities the last day of the month. First one had three units left. First unit was good (10X10) went for $700. Second unit was a managers unit. Speaker box with 2 10" speakers, a metal shelf that was very bent up and a bucket. Went for $75. Third unit had 4 green garbage bags. It went for $25. Ugh what are these people thinking?

Second facility had 7 units. First unit (10X20) I had a tip on and had to have it $800. Second unit (another 10X20) wasn't bad sold for $400. Third unit (again not a bad unit) sold for $550. At that point manager announced that they had found a payment drop for one of the units and couldn't sell it (lucky they hadn't already sold it). Forth unit I missed as I had to sneak back and check in my unit. Fifth unit was garbage. Sold for $300. Not sure what anyone saw? Sixth unit was odd shaped but would guess 10X20. It was a hodgepodge of stuff. Sold for $1600.

So back to my unit. I had a tip that this unit belonged to the previous facility owner. I knew that some of the items were personal and him as well as his family were avid hunters. Found three gun boxes. Unfortunately they were all empty. Better luck next time.
The unit was not a bust though. 20 wood dinning room chairs $50.00 each makes the money back. A set of 22" rims and tires in great shape Sold for $500, two dinning tables (will price $50 and $100), two bakers racks (priced at $100), an antique sharpening wheel in really good shape for its age ($150), a Yamaha organ ($50), 2 twin beads and matching night stands (not sure on price for these yet), a set of end tables and coffee table ($100 for the set), and 4 sets of huge elk horns (was told I couldn't sell them. They are not native to the state so I can. Value each $200 to $500) The previous owner came by after the sale and said that there were guns in one of the lockers (he has 4) but he couldn't remember which on they are in. All in all not a bad day. Will definitively be watching for his other units to come up at the next sale.

Stores / Re: Do you have a brick and mortar store?
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:47:35 PM »
I opened a store just over a year ago. (I have been in this location for over nine years with another business) I have to say that I was just playing with the idea so I was not legal for several months. Things started off kinda slow. At first I was very hesitant to tell people where the items came from. Now I have no problem telling everyone what I do. I believe it is a pull for some to see the kind of things that come out of storage units. Though I make sure to really exaggerate how much work is involved.
I am in a very small town (1500 people) so foot traffic is not heavy. There are two other shops similar to mine here. Slowly things have picked up. I am situated halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles on the 101 and this is a nice area to stop and take a break. I have been pleasantly surprised lately to find that I have quite a following from the San Francisco crowd. I'm finding that there are alot of people that think junk shopping and wine tasting go good together. Who knew? LOL

Our flea market is still a drive-in. Went to a movie there last Saturday.

They have always charged $1.00 a person if you walk in or $2.00 a car if you drive in and park.

Flea Markets / Re: Do people at your flea market come before sunrise?
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:25:39 PM »
I quit going to the flea market for that reason. Mine lets the buyers in with the vendors. You can't even get the stuff off of the truck before they are digging through it. I had several brass statues stolen while I was trying to unload. I sell mostly out of the store but was trying to offload some of the smaller stuff I don't sell in the store. I would rather give it to charity than go through that again.

In the summer months some of them provide water but never food. One buyer said a couple weeks ago at a rather long auction that next time he was bringing an ice chest and selling sandwiches. Most thought that was a great idea.

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are awesome and remove marker off of most hard things. GooBGone is a staple in my cleaning kit as well as lighter fluid for sticker removal. For any kind of ink on fabric try plain old hair spray.

I have a couple of customers that love pipes. I have only found a couple of them but have sold them fast. Bongs went in the trash. The only MJ I have found was so brown it had no smell left. No other illegal drugs in any units I have bought.

We went to a sale a couple of months ago and when the owner opened the door for the hallway to a unit for sale the skunk smell was overpowering. He had no clue what could be causing the smell. I told him to call the Sheriff and have them bring the dog out for a training session. Haven't been back and am wondering if he did and what they might have found. LOL Boy are there some clueless people out there.

Even though I have a store front I still have stuff at home. Right now it is jewelry that I said I was going to research at night. It has been on the dinning room table for several weeks. Ugh!
This business belongs to both my mom and I. At the very beginning we vowed to never take something home unless it was better than what we already had. If you take something home, something needs to be brought back to the store to sell. For the most part we have followed that rule. Neither one of wants to be the next Hoarders show. LOL

I don't have a dedicated website but I use Etsy to sell a lot of vintage things. That page is linked to my Facebook page. Between the two (which are almost free) I have been able to sell things local as well as ship items. When I list on Craigslist I always direct to my Facebook to see more pictures. I have made several multiple sales that way.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Lockers and Big Dump Fees
« on: February 06, 2013, 08:58:09 PM »
$38.00 but the scrap metal made me $126 so it was not that bad. I did have a recycle dumpster delivered recently and that has save a lot of dump fees. All paper, cardboard, glass, and paperback books go in it and I don't have to haul it.

One of my last units had both the parents in it. First time for me to find remains. Dr Jim and Mrs Jim had divorced in the 70's. Dr Jims son left all of his paperwork in the unit as well. Manager wanted nothing back. Long story short Dr Jim had instructions to be buried in his family plot in another state. Contacted the cemetery (was an odd conversation) but found everything is paid for. Dr Jim is on his way to his final resting place via first class mail. Mrs Jim will have a proper burial at sea in the spring. Lucky for both of them I have made great money off of their sons unit and I truly believe in karma.

Auction today advertised 5 units. Really glad I have gotten into the habit of calling the day before because they all paid up.
Tomorrows auction advertises 2 facilities. Auction one had 5 units. When I called this afternoon all had paid. Auction two had 13 units. There are 11 available so I guess I am heading out for that one in the morning. I did get a tip from the manager a couple weeks ago (they do electronic recycle and I took in a few things) that these are some of the best units she has seen in 5 years.
Not sure why I am even considering going as I am still reeling from the 5 units I bought at the first of January. I have sold quite a lot of it but there are still boxes I haven't even unpacked into the store yet. I haven't been to an auction since so I guess I just need to get out and see what is going on and see if this manager is right.

Glad to see you did not have a bad experience. I know that a lot of people are reluctant to bid online. I think most of these units that go for so much are newbies like we see at the auctions or maybe people buying for personal use. I just hope that no to many facilities go this was because I truly like going to the auction.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Wondering if anyone sells on etsy.com?
« on: January 08, 2013, 09:25:03 PM »
I have just opened an Etsy store about a month ago. So far I have only listed a few items. Mostly vintage jewelry. Made my first sale over the weekend. I linked the store to my Facebook page which is great because I sold a piece that way as well right out of the store. It is a lot of work but I have a lot of vintage jewelry to get rid of. I have gotten my niece to help by taking pictures so that takes one step out of what I have to do. So little time with so much to do. LOL
