Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Low unit #'s and junk units.

Several interesting sidelines mentioned in your post !

The only transition I have made is more picking and fewer auctions; that and buying only better quality lockers instead of the larger number of lockers I used to buy.

Even I think that it is a threshing board. The good thing is it seems to be in good shape.

Given your signature block, I wonder how many people on this forum are actually in the market for a storage locker
in Dublin, Ireland.  :o

I've been using a single Caravan (10 x10) and sometimes an extra EasyUp but have wanted a 2nd Caravan for
some time.

Got lucky today and picked up 3 (count 'em....3) 10 x 10 Aluma shades with rollaround bags, 4-piece side curtains, tie-down stakes....all three for $300. To me it was a deal as they seem hard to come by in my area...most flea guys end up with the Wal-Mart brands.

Anyway, these three are like new so I'm a happy camper.

Last two weekends have been windy and I have been using just old canvas bags holding 15 to 25 pound weights on each corner. Thinking of improving on this a bit and have read some on the internet about what people do, but thought I would inquire here too.  Stories or recommendations ?

($100.....$30......hey, she was close!!)   :P

I recently sold two different Beatles books at the flea market....$10 each. On the other hand, I sold an X-Men and a Batman "Cave" book for $15 each.

As to the comment "It sells for $100 on eBay" I think there is some value in saying that. Yes, we're in the driveway or at the flea market, but saying that ....or more commonly..."It sells for $100 at the store" seems legit to me (if true). They then make the comment that "but we're at the flea market".... this after I have offered it to them at $10 !

What I don't get is this. I offer some item at say $4 (maybe a smaller size tool like a new Crescent brand wrench). They balk or say something like "That's more than I want to pay."  When I ask them "How much is it in the store?" They often respond, "I have no idea" or "I don't know."  I find THAT hard to believe. Even the dumbest customer has SOME idea of what something costs at retail.  Now if they just really can't afford that $4, then OK, but keep walking around until you can find some dumb seller who WILL sell you a $10 new tool for $1.00.

Looks awesome!

I am really interested to see how that wood working equipment comes out. Would love to see a post in a few months or whenever you sell it telling the brand & model, age, working condition, and how much you sold them for, if you don't mind.

Well, it's exactly one month since I bought this lkr and sorry to tell Cobia (and myself) that not ONE of the big woodworking tools has sold !

The frm owner expressed interest in the radial saw but of course has no money (I haven't advertised it yet but will now do so).

The shaper I haven't advertised as it seems hung up some how. If I hand crank the belt from underneath (not easy as it's protected by sheet metal) then turn it on, it goes, but a day later it doesn't. Needs to be blown out with air pressure.

The wood lathe...not a bite.

I HAVE sold a lot of smaller power tools, drills, routers, Dremels, skill saws, etc and a lot of bits (drill and router) and all sorts of clamps, etc.

Doll house has had some interest but not sold yet. Sold the big buffett and table, six chairs. Bar chairs not sold. Beds not sold.

As of 6/8/2012 the lkr has brought in $3,050 and is $1,150 in the black. Ok for a month and still a lot of big stuff left and fair amount of small stuff left, so looking good for net profit of $2,000 to $2500 I think over a total two month period, maybe a little more.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Staged unit story
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:25:45 AM »
... when you actually see the goods and they turn out to be staged, now that's just not ok!

The expression "If it looks too good to be true it probably is." could easily have been born of the storage auction buying business".

I've gotten some good looking lockers and fortunately they were not staged, but in the last year or so I think the number of staged units has gone up. I can't say that I have passed up a good looking locker, but I have been outbid on some and I have heard stories of several locally that were staged. One bad example was a locker full of good looking boxes...all empty. Both the mgr and the auctioneer basically said "oh well".  I will go to that facility the next time they have an auction, but I will WATCH very carefully.

Another instance of a setup happened a couple of years ago where a fellow bought a great looking lkr for $4500 or so and I mean brand new tool boxes, etc were showing, but again, almost all boxes.   All empty. Buyer made a stink and this time the mgr and auctioneer backed off and did a full refund.  The two people who put it together (in collusion with mgr) were totalled banned from buying lkrs by that autioneer and all the area auctioneers banned them from buying as well...put them out of business.

I am starting to wonder if there is a dwindling interest in the attending and buying of auctions and in a secondary interest in talking about them.

First the auctions:

I have to admit I haven't been going to too many auctions held by my area's big four auctioneers because of former crowds and prices, but in talking to other buyers in my area I am starting to hear that in general the crowds are diminishing.  The lesser known or less popular auctions I have been going to have borne this out (with super lockers still going high of course).

Secondly the talking about the auction scene here on the forum:

I'm thinking that Cobia would be the best one to do an analysis of the member stats shown in the stats area of the forum as he seems good at that.  A quick look shows (to me) some decline in the number of members, and a very unscientific look at the daily flow of messages here looks very DOWN to me.

Any thoughts on either or both of these observations...auction attendance...forum participation ?

Movieman, I know you know this, just wanted to point it out for the other players in the game.  ;)

Yes, gas is always an issue, especially if one has gone out of town any distance. I seldom do that anymore. Still waiting for the final crowd and newbie decline.

I DO buy small cheap units sometimes IF I have bought a big unit at the same location. You're already there and if you see some sellable items in a small unit (or even a junk unit) you're not impacting yourself negatively too much. The only problem with small (and especially JUNK) units in my area is that even they are going for $25 to $75. One gal who used to buy all the $5 and $1 units now spends up to $50 on them!  She has even gone up to $300 on semi-good looking 10 x 10s, but they typically are still going for around $500 in my area (witness the fact I recently spent $825 and $1900 for the last two lockers I got).

2nd half hour....

Went outside and this time missed the 1st 15 minutes !

Watching Barry now look through totes...nothing so far !

He likes to let a wall of boxes fall down and crash.  Seems he paid $1900 for maybe an 8 x 10.

****

Brandi and J.   .....  Paid $1400 ....  At least his estimates of the hand tools were accurate.....$25 each.
Whoa...what's that....old 40's radio...I just got one myself and mine works !  Maybe worth $100 or so. The expert says...1941 Philco...as is....$250 ...restored would be....$1,500 but they would have to pay $650 to restore it.

*****

Darrel got one for $650. Put his son to work sorting in the back end of store....lots of room in the work area.
Dad looks through the "junk" pile and finds "$1,000" worth of stuff. The "whoa" factor comes up after the commercial.
"You wouln't believe me if I told you." Darrel says...he thinks its a Tolusee Latrec (sp?).  What are the chances of that happening.....next to none. Maybe it's a reproduction.  Nope, not a repro, not a print...expert says it sold for $75,000 some years ago...BUT it's a FORGERY...May sell for $3500.

****

Barry got a Star Wars jacket "Revenge of the Jedi"....worth some bucks...experts say $3,000.

2112
It's baaaack !

Tuesday, June 5, 2012 is here and so is the rat pack of bidders from southern California.

I missed the first 10 minutes but can't have been too much. Commerical on at the moment and going
back to see what Jarrod found in a $400 locker. Brandi, b****ing the whole while he's moving stuff out.

Dave didn't buy...says he stuck it to Darrell at $1750...gotta be gold bars of some kind in there.

****

New show #2 following this first episode and a new series starting next week...Bartering is the subject, but we're not talking "my old guitar" for your "old computer"....nope it's high ticket items.

****

Jarrod  finds a box of rocks....I can relate to that. Basically some crystals and pyrite.....from the two I saw, I sell those at $2 to $15 depending on rock and size.

*****
Darrel finds a metal detector...didn't see the name brand but it wasn't a White's or Garrett.

A treasure hunter on the beach tells him he might get $800 for it.

*****

Barry gets a martini set. Worth?   Dealer tells him its "unique" .... sterling.... worth?...dealer says....$1,000....un-freakin' believable.

****

Rocks are for shakra (sp?) healing....value....$50.  Quartz value.....$80.   Oralite Amethyst ? Never heard of the first word..dealer says $250....the box...worth $350....total of $850.  I would have thought maybe $100 or so.

On to episode 2.

General Storage Auction Talk / Coins....Barber Dimes
« on: June 05, 2012, 03:16:12 PM »
I know at least ONE reader here who will respond !

I was going through an envelope of old family pics and found four barber dimes in plastic sleeves.

They are:

Dime 1910P    $10
Dime 1910S    $10
Dime 1913P    $5
Dime 1915P    $10

I know CONDITION is everything with coins and I think there are half a dozen or more grades. I looked these up on eBay and the prices I have assigned above seem to fit mine, though I'm sure the amount of detail in a cheek bone makes a difference.

My question is, can I "safely" ask these prices at the flea market and adjust downward by a buck or two. Yes, I know you really have to SEE them, but I'm just asking the coin collectors for some general response. I don't want to take pics or anything for either here or eBay. I can guarantee you they are not $75 coins !

Thanks for any help.

So there is lies teh eternal question.

Do you take a higher locker with a lower % of profit and more cash? (higer risk more reward)

or

Do you take a lower locker with a Higer % of profit, but les cash? (lower risk lower reward).

And of course we don't know the answer UNTIL we have sold the goods we have bought.

I have bought expensive lockers and (1) made good money (2) broken even (3) lost money.  I think that covers every possibility.

Luck certainly plays a part in our business and we have both GOOD and BAD from time to time. Making "good" judgements about the possibilites is a big part (IMO) of the profitabilty. The newbies lack of experience here is what makes them stop coming back if they over-invest and get a bad locker.
