General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Any tips on holding an Auction

WOW the Great MM(in his own mind) read one of my post.....FOA!

Well, anyone who calls someone else out on his spelling should certainly do a bit of "proof reading" on his own posts...or is it a case of "do as I say, not as I do?".

Also, we could put it to a vote here as to who has more "believeabilty"... you or I...or is it "you or me"?  ;)

Turned in any "miscreant" auctioneers lately .... or for that matter, people who go faster than the speed limit or talk on their cell phones while driving ?  ;D

3. you need to proof read, you have a misspelling!

Proofread is one word.  ;)

Yet at the bottom of the screen you directed us to it indicates "designer websites by watkinswebsites.com".

It looks to me like you are promoting your website design business as a "free trial" is promoted when clicking on THAT link.

Normally, I would label this thread with a big fat SPAM picture, but I'll give you the benefit of a doubt.

Went to an auction on Tuesday the 10...five units.

I remember two went in the $100 to $150 range...both 5 x 10s...each with about 5 to 10 items. I would have paid maybe $40 for each.

Crowd wasn't bad .... maybe 20 to 25.

Then a 12 x 20. I would have paid $450 to be safe. It started at $300 and sold at $625.  It was stuff down each side and was only 2 feet high at that...couple of bigger things, a large aquarium for one.

******

Went to three today. First place nothing to write home about...3 units. Second place 6 units. One nice 10 x 15 showing a lot of small tool boxes (contents ?) 4 bikes (worth $40 apiece at flea), a frig, a washer (or dryer ?) beat up chest of drawers.  I waited until bidding started and at $700 bumped it by $25...my one bid. Sold for $925 to one of the 5 "big" bidders there (me included)....all but two of us bailed at the $725 mark.

So, it goes on. Small crowd here though...again only about 20.  Third place cancelled.

The next auction hunters, Wednesday, April 11, 2012....

....features a pair of dueling pistols the two find in your ordinary crap locker.

Hell, I find dueling pistols about once every six months; I trip over them in my living room I have so many !  ;)

Back from my vacation and got a call from a fellow buyer who started the conversation like this:

"Want to hear a REAL storage wars story?"

Seems another buyer got two 10x40s just packed with good tools, etc.  First one went for $4K; second one went for $2500.

It gets better.  He found a box of pre 1964 silver coins...sold it as a batch to one buyer for $4,300.

It does happen but remember this guy's been buying for over 20 years too....he's bought a lot of lockers and
they weren't ALL this good !

The old expression "If the walls could talk" certainly applies here !

Even the more mundane lockers we buy have a hundred stories to tell; one manager told me that while "walking the property" one time, he heard sounds he likened to "moaning and groaning" only to come up on a 10 x 10 that was the source...two people going at it on the mattress which was the only item in there.

They didn't see him peeking through the crack in the vertical door and he said after that incident that he got a note a few days later that the renter wouldn't be continuing the locker the next month; he did have to get rid of that mattress though !

I hear they have a club, admission is free but you have to bring your own airplane.  ;D

I am not a member of that club, and it has been awhile since my plane has been in the hangar  ;) .

Meanwhile I am sitting in a black designer chair at DIA waiting to fly to ABQ !

Forgot to comment on the Mile High Marketplace (flea market, etc).

All the Yelp reviews were bad, but I found there were about 150 "yard/garage" sellers there and I was satisfied
with my tour.

I noticed about 3 vendors all selling the same new, yellow multimeter and some of them had two cases of them
stacked at the front of their space with the top case open and showing one open box with a multimeter (and another 20 in the case unopened).  This goes AGAINST any marketing I do of such a product.

To my mind the potential buyer sees two things:
1) He has so many he'll sell them cheap
2) He has so many I can buy one anytime in the next two months.

If I had that many I would put out TWO; one in open box one in unopened box and then replinish as necessary thus
avoiding what I see are two marketing mistakes mentioned above.

*****

I saw one video editor which I looked up on the iPad. They wanted $30 and they weren't selling on eBay, so didn't buy.
I also saw a commerical quality tool for $20 that I would sell for maybe $180 or so, but it would have needed disassembly and sending back to California, so passed on it as well, but would have bought if I was at home.

Best result was just seeing confirmation of my (our ?) believe that "stuff is stuff" no matter where you are.

Also I took pictures of several potential products I want to investigate.

So, on to Santa Fe where I doubt they have mid-week flea markets. Their big thing is the central market where primarily silver jewelry is sold.

Later friends....

keep on buying and selling !

Flying out to Santa Fe today (Sunday, April 1st)......No fooling !

Had a great time with my children and grandchildren and am sad (but happy) that my one daughter and
her husband have taken a teaching job in CHINA for two years. They are great teachers and it will be a great experience for them and their two young children. They taught in Italy before they had children.

As a bonus my current plan is to spend 3 weeks or so with them in China after they have been there about a year.

*****

Now on to spend a few days with my brother in Santa Fe.  Saw him there two years ago; unfortunately he had a stroke last year and is now not in great shape; he is in a care home but his wife lives near by and sees him constantly. His daughter is also a "worldly" figure who has lived in Paris for many years.

Our families....what it's really all about.  :)

Saturday morning, 7:30....

Heading out to the Mile High Marketplace pretty soon...about a 30 minute drive.
Looked at Yelp reviews and they were overwhelmingly negative !

Sounds like the "yard/garage sale" type of vendor (that we all are) is only about 25% of the market with the rest being
Asian imports (and duplicated from stall to stall) and of course prepared food vendors and produce vendors making up the bulk.

Hoping the vendors I am looking for will be there. Apparently Sunday is a better day for them but I will be flying out
to Santa Fe Sunday afternoon.

Oh well, gotta go...pretty much the only shot of any size.

*****

It seems Salvation Army is small in this area; Goodwill a bigger player along with ARC thrift stores. I will hit one independent I found on the net...Mile High Thrift.  Will report back on the the venues I go to for any other folks who visit this area and want to stay in touch with the biz roots while visiting family etc.

*****

A few days ago I picked up about $300 (wholesale price) of "rocks" at a wholesale only place near Colorado Springs. Prices not nearly as good as Quartzsite, AZ, but didn't get there this Jan/Feb so will live with it. Will still make money off them but not as much....needed some variety to add to my existing stock.

Children love "rocks" and they are a good seller for me in Spring/Summer. I also enjoy just talking to people about them and they often lead to other sales from my other tables. I am still using 8, six-foot tables (and some smaller ones) spread over 4 parking spaces and the "rocks" take a full table.

****

Gotta get offline. Hear stirring grand-children who will soon be flopping in grandpa's lap !

I don't even think they can recoup the cost of posting the auction, etc. in the local paper.  Will have to remember to ask that question next time talk to one of the property managers.

In California the cost of running the ad...$200 or so depending on paper...is added in to what the tenant owes the facility. I guess if there were 10 names in the listing they would charge each of the names $20. After all, it is a cost the facility has incurred.

The costs the facility would incur would include (my educated guessing):

storage costs
late fees
legal notice costs
registered mail notices (maybe up to 3 times)
auctioneer costs
lock cutting and locking them back up
dump run & labor costs if locker doesn't sell
etc, etc.

Also, if the auction sale price doesn't cover those costs, the facility will still go after the deadbeat tenant to
recover the balance, and this means incurring costs for tracking deadbeats and going after their money.

It has only been since the shows (IMO) that facilities have often been doing well on their auctions.

Getting a jump start on April, 2012 auction scene. May we all find that "1 in 50" locker that has the gold bars.

(and may the newbies buy the other 49 at prices which will drive them away once they don't make a profit).  ;D
