Not to step on anyones toes but several of you have publicly admitted to "Bid Rigging" and "Collusion"
which is a Felony.

I would advise you not to post anymore about " agreements" that you have....and edit what you have already posted

If you are talking about me (for one) I have consulted with my attorney and he indicates I have nothing to worry about when I ask one of my friends "Do you want this one? If so, I won't bid". He doesn't consider that bid rigging or collusion.

No, I won't get a new lawyer.

As to your advice that those of us who have committed this crime should edit what we have already posted, I for one will ignore that too.  ;D

Whats funny is that most americans are out of work ....

What ?

I thought the unemployment rate nationally was between 8% and 10%.

During the depression the unemployment rate was around 50% if I remember correctly.

Went to one auction the other day; only about 50 bidders (really only about 6 actually bid), but a pain anyway as viewing takes a long time.

I stayed for 8 of the 22 lkrs offered; figured my time was worth more than standing around waiting for people to pay too much for too little...also just wasn't into it that much.  Went to do some "picking" and got a couple of things.

Personally, I am going to be just as "greedy" as I can handle the quanity of units and buy at a price to turn a profit.

It's competition, and knowing how to run your business, simple as that.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree I guess. Among the regulars I run with we have an agreement to "share" the wealth and not buy every locker we like and can afford. There are always more lockers around the corner and we often say to each other "do you want this one?" knowing if person "A" needs one right now we can live without it.

On the other hand, the couple I am talking about want no part of that cooperation and subsequently they get run up by any number of people; they don't help us and we don't help them.

As far as knowing how to "run your business, simple as that" goes, there are different ways to "run your business" and they can all be profitable. Apple maintains their price points as an example (doesn't cut prices like others do) and they seem to be doing all right.

I have friends who "turn and burn" and I have friends who are willing to hold out for more .... both are successful. There is always more than one way to be successful (IMO).

IMO, paying $3850 for a unit where it's pretty full but hard to see anything, has more to do with stupidity and less to do with greed.

That's right, but the fact they want to "buy them all" has to do with greed.

One of the regular buyers who likes to "buy them all" made a mistake recently.

He and his wife paid $3850 for a 10 x 30 that was pretty full but hard to really see anything.

Word has come down from people in whom he confided that he thought he would lose about $2,000 on it.

Oh well...take the fall and learn a lesson...and don't be so greedy.

Storage Auctioneers / Re: charging admission ????
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:11:17 AM »
The idea of charging admission to look at lkrs seems detrimental at first, but those of us who can afford it might applaud it after a while.

If it cut the crowd down it would be well worth it. On the other hand maybe it should only be applied to auctions having 5 or more units being sold. Even it applied to facilities with less than five units for sale it might not be a bad idea.

One philosophy has it that fewer people will go to an auction with only 1 or 2 units for sale, but that often goes out the window with "it's raining" idea that fewer people will show up. Every one goes anyway thinking no one else will...net result 30 or more people for 2 units....and they're both crap.

I am not fond of one or more regulars who tend to buy "all" the lockers...spread the joy guys !

This happens less over time as some of the lkrs they get don't pay out well.

I also don't care for newbies who buy 5 out of the 10 or so at any given auction, but for them it's an even quicker death. One guy did that a couple of months ago and  no one has seen him since.

There may be a market for them, but I don't know as I stay away from such things.

Scrap is possible; would probably have to vent the freezing stuff.

Finally, such is the lot of the lkr buyer; sometimes you get stung.  :'(

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: iPad for research at remote locations
« on: February 05, 2012, 08:34:05 AM »

Wow you get there early. Most of the vendors at ours are not there until later. And most I have seen know what they have. Not that I would know. Still working on the knowledge.  ???

At my flea if you have a reserved space you have to get there by 6 a.m. If you don't check in they sell your space to a "daily" vendor who is lined up ready to get it !

There are about 250 or so vendors at my flea. I haven't broken it down percentage wise by vendor type specifically, but there are what I would call "garage/yard sale" vendors (like us), "wholesalers" who sell "made in China" new goods and toilet paper, and food or produce vendors.  Of the garage sale vendors, many are hispanic, some black, most caucasian....within those ethnic groups there are people who represent all orders of intelligence with the bulk being average or below...that's where the money is to be made for those who know what to buy...the rest is just luck in getting there first with that knowledge.

The chief "picker" has 15,000 plus feedback on eBay (not me...I'm at about 850). He never stops at my booth as he knows I am competition and won't sell him anything cheap. He does not sell at the fleas.

The next picker has 6,000 plus feedback on ebay. He sells at the same flea I do and they both shop the other 3 fleas in our immediate area.

One of the guys who has sold for 8 years at my flea has just quit the flea (at least for a while) to do nothing but picking and he drives up to 90 miles to go to other fleas for picking...that's too much for me.

Anyway, picking seems to be working right now.

It's official !

iPad is "paid off" completely thanks to researching items at fleas, etc.

I bought it in late Nov, 2011 and 2 months later it is completely "paid off".

Today I sold an item for $330 that I had paid $10 for. Also sold for $185 an item I had paid $5 for.
These were extreme cases of course, but they were part of the plan for this kind of picking and I got both
of them from same dealer at my flea about 3 weeks ago.

Of course it helped a lot that the dealer didn't know what he had and that I got there before the other pickers did.
When I arrive at 5:45 a.m. for my reserved spot I head right out with flashlight in hand and make the rounds. Several of the major pickers don't get there until first light .... 7 or so. Oh well, early bird gets the goods.
