Laws about Storage Auctions / Re: Florida Self Storage Auction Laws
« on: February 02, 2012, 09:14:15 PM »
Did you know that in FL if a lkr sells for more than is owed on it that the facility has to give the overage to the non paying owner?    I found that interesting.

That is true in MANY states.

all together combined $170.00

yes i said it right.  All trashed or almost empty with broken furniture.

Maybe next time!

 ;D

What no quads, Winchester 73s, model jet aircraft, dirt bikes, coin collections, rare art, autographed sports memorabilia, jade, Breitlings or Rolexes ?  What the hell !  What kind of dirtbag storage facility was that ?  ;)

Can anyone tell me where I can find the Newspapers for legal notices on the storage auctions around Sacramento or Yuba City areas? Thanks!

Start with the Sacramento Bee; you'll need to check more than one paper though !

And you'll need to check them everyday for a couple of months !

You did sort through those bags first just to make sure there was nothing else hidden didn't you?

Half of them were transparent bags, so NO on those. Yes, on the others.

Beth...

This is one reason I use my phone number on CL and check the box which denies them the opportunity to email me.

Totally, classic fake attempt at defrauding you.

Turn them in to CL.

Transitioning from Jan to Feb...

Started working in the lkr I got the other day...took 23 black and transparent bags of clothes to Goodwill. Keep in mind I could tell these were not the kind I would sell at the flea market.

Got some good stuff and looks like I will sell about $1K or a little more out of the $600 lkr.

Last day of January, 2012 and I got a 10 x 10 for $600. Looks pretty good but I haven't really been in it yet.

There were 15 lkrs and only about 25 of us....5 or so regulars and the rest....YOU KNOW!

Some lkrs went for outrageous prices for what they were; I would have liked mine better at $400, but oh well !

Will report later on how it comes out.

Meanwhile, moving on to February, 2012 !

Craigslist / Re: Are CL buyers really nuts or what?

I put my phone number on CL items. I don't use my cell number as I hardly use my cell phone (mostly for outgoing calls).

In the last two years or so I think I've had 3 or 4 people not show up for appointments. Here's how I try to avoid it.

1) They call me the first time and ask when they could see the item.
2) If it's that day I just make the appt with them (get their number) and I show up. Usually they do to.
3) If they want an appt for the next day, we agree on a time (say 10:00 am) and I get their number and
tell them to call me a half hour before that (9:30 am) to confirm the appt. If they don't call me then, I call them.

I meet them at my permanent storage unit which is 1 mile from my home. I ask what they will be driving so I can watch for them. I often arrive 10" early to get the item out of the locker, or I may be bringing it from my home.

I meet them at the parking lot in front of the facility. I get them through the gate and direct them to where my car is parked by the storage unit.

In my ad I might say something like..."the price quoted here is firm."

One thing I especially ENJOY about my bigger CL items is when I know the "buyer" is coming from 30 to 90 miles away. They are pretty much a captive buyer at that point and seldom do they ask for a lower price (whereas a local might).
I had one item at $300 and I did sell it for $275 because I hadn't had that much interest in it and didn't think coming down $25 on something I had paid $40 for was much of a hit !

Right now I am putting my better "picks" on eBay but if they don't go there after two times out I put them on CL.

WOW.... I sold a "fallaparticle board" dreser for $50.

The vast majority of that stuff is in quite bad shape by the time I get it; I try not to buy lkrs with a lot of it showing as it
sort of gives a sign of what the other quality is like (lacking). Once in a while though I'll get some of it when a lkr is showing a lot of tools or something else of quality. I usually just break it up or it falls apart when being loaded.

Wow ! ...... Only 10 black, plastic bags of worthless clothes this time !

Wow ! ...... Only 6 pieces of "fallaparticle board" furniture this time ! (and only three of them with cigarette burns!)

Wow ! ...... Only 4 boxes of six year old electric bills, court proceedings and "Correctional institution letters" this time!

Wow ! ...... Only 1 box of 3/4 melted candles this time !

What ? ...... Only 1 box of dollar store "collectibles" hand-wrapped in newspaper ?
                  What's up with that !

I have found recently that both Goodwill and Salvation Army (in my area) are doing research on the better items that look like they might be worth more...this would be on electronics, etc that I look at.

I found an item at SA that had a printout from the internet fastened to it. Internet price was $1,000. They had it stickered for $300. I went to the furniture section and sat down with my iPad and eBay showed one listed at $500 and it was the 2nd time around as completed showed it had not sold before at $500 and it was the only completed. I passed on that one.

*****
On the other hand at the SA daily auction of as-is items, I found an item which I got for $20 which I think I can sell for $80 or so. It is for owners of those big $250K to $500K motorhomes and sells new for $125 to $150.

I haven't been to one of those SA auctions for about 7 years, but have decided to start going for single items; the 4' square wire bins are of little interest to me.
