Storage Facilities / Re: No children at storage auctions?
« on: November 29, 2012, 10:42:59 AM »
I was at an auction not to long ago and this little girl fell and scraped her knee. She started screaming! Of course she was in the arms of her father who was standing right next to me. Two units later she was still wailing. Really? If your child is causing that much interruption please go out of the area where it doesn't interrupt others trying to bid. I usually don't have a problem with kids at the auction but parents need to be polite when their kids have a melt down.

Quick story... Guy buys locker for $25.00. It was pretty full. He does this for fun. He hauls two truck loads to the dump. Takes three trucks to donation. Finds a couple of silver coins. He gives me 6 boxes of hard back books and a box of rocks.
I dump rocks out in planter at the shop and there is $5.00 worth of rolled pennies in the bottom. Go through books and find a signed copy of Johnathan Livingston Seagull that I sell for $50.00.
He maybe made his $25.00 back on locker and gave me $55.00 for free. In my opinion that was a very lazy way to handle any unit. I haven't seen him at a sale since. Most people don't take the time to find the money in a unit.

General Storage Auction Talk / Cost of units in your area?
« on: November 13, 2012, 08:04:38 PM »
Just wondering if other areas in the country are like mine. Seems like units with furniture go pretty cheap while the same size unit full of boxes goes really high. I am not complaining as I have a store and like the furniture with a few boxes of stuff. Usually I can scoop for around 300.00. I like to bid on what I can see and feel that the stuff contained in the boxes is my profit. This has worked out for me.
There are three regulars (all were doing this before I got involved) that will bid a box unit to well over 1000.00 on a regular basis. I know they sell at the swap-meet but are those units really worth that much money? I have never had the courage to bid that much on something I can't see. I guess I am not that much of a gambler.
Just wondering what kind of trends you guys see in your area.

Oh urns. Was at an auction yesterday and one box up front said greenfield cemetery. No way I was bidding on that unit. Yuck!!

For me anything with a HUGE TV in it. I have bought two units with around 76" TVs in them. I can't give them away. Both were made in the 2000s and high-def. But no one wants them. Like Tclane said avoid those things that are very heavy and awkward if your not sure you can sell it or if you don't want it yourself. I gave one to a local restaurant for karaoke night. The other went to the Senior Center. No more huge TVs for me. Well unless the unit has something else really great in it. LOL

I went north yesterday for an auction. This was my first time every exploring this way. I live on the edge of what they call the Salad Bowl of the country. Lots of farm workers to the north and I wasn't sure if the units would be any good. With the lack of auctions to the south I figured lets give it a try.
My store if pretty full and I had a small list of what I was looking for. About 50 people showed up. About half were just looky loos. Total lockers available at auction time was 36 and one van. I was surprised that only one regular from my stomping ground showed up. (the drive was only 45 minutes) First unit (inside) was garbage. Second unit (again inside) had lots of kids toys. (not what I sell) Third unit was baby stuff. (again inside and doesn't sell for me) $100.00, $150.00 and $80.00. Next unit was outside. It was opened and I thought wow this ones been here for a long time. Dust everywhere. So I start talking to a local who lives in the town that told me this facility was built about seven years ago. Every unit that was opened outside had the same problem. The dust is so fine in theses farming communities that is gets under the door and coats everything.
I did leave without anything but not for lack of trying. Most units went between $100 and $300 dollars. The five I really liked, so did their whale, and he out bid me an all of them. ($800 to 1300 way to much for my wallet) If I really needed inventory I would have went higher but was really looking for a bargain. The van ended up being a 1998 Mitsubishi box truck and it went for $1050. If it runs the kids that bought it got a steal.
The auctioneer was fast it only took two and a half hours to finish. Just wondering if I had bought a unit if all of that dust would have blown off by the time I got it home.
All in all I will keep looking for auctions to the north. Most of the stuff wasn't bad, just dirty. I did make friends with the regular from my area. She just does this for fun and so I gave her my card. Next weeks auction is south.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Keep it or sell it?

The rule for my mom and I is you better like it more than something you already have because you have to get rid of something to take it home. My mom always jokes that without this rule she will soon be on an episode of hoarders. Ugh her and her reality shows.

In California they are legal. Sealed Online Bids does a lot of them. I have purchased one unit in this manner. I'm not sure that I would have went this way but I had been to the facility a couple times in the past and really liked the manager. She takes great pictures for the online auctions and always answer questions when I call her.
I totally understand why she decided to go this route. The last live auction was only three units by the time of auction. Well over 50 people showed up and it took over three hours to auction those units which were all on the second floor. It was a bunch of garbage and only one unit sold.
Last week I was very disappointed as I was bidding on a unit there and about 30 minutes before bidding closed the listing disappeared. I called her immediately and she said the owners mom came in and paid up the past due fees. I had spent some time researching the shoe boxes in the unit and had added up over $1000.00 worth at e-bay prices. Apparently the mom could not let her daughter loose such an expensive shoe collection.
There are facilities in my area that I am not sure I would feel comfortable bidding on an online unit. We will have to wait and see if it really catches on. I truly would not like to do all of my auctions this way as I love going to the actual facilities and bidding live. It is part of the fun of doing this in my opinion.

Auction Tuesday had 5 units. There were 16 bidders. 10 of which I had never seen before. This auctioneer is our advertiser so was a very small crowd for him. Usually the numbers are around 50. Units were not bad but went way to high for my taste. Two units went to one newbie and the rest went to regulars. I think all of the regulars were hungry for inventory. Lucky for me I still have boxes from the three units I purchased at the end of last month that I haven't put on the shelves.
November appears to be another slow month for auctions. Hope everyone else is doing better than me.

So far everything listed this month has either been canceled or postponed. Not sure what is going on around here? Are that many people really paying up? Gonna be a long month of nothing. Ugh!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Saw my first truly staged unit today
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:49:22 PM »
Went to a sale a couple of weeks ago that advertised 15 units on the auctioneers web site. When we got there they said there were 20. I was kind of worried until I talked to the owner. He had just bought the facility and had a total of 50 units to sell after putting liens on 80. He decided to break it up into two sales. The first 20 were the longest delinquent. He will sell off the rest this month. Originally he advertised thinking that more would pay up. I never saw the legal notice in the paper but someone else there said he ran all 80. This owner has another facility I have bought several units from and I have never had any reason not to trust him before.
As for locks. I have only been to two sales in the last two years that I felt actually cut the lock right in front of us. The very first sale I went to was done by the local auctioneer that I have frequented for years. This was his first storage auction. I don't think anyone knew what was in the lockers as one only had a stack of pacing blankets in it and they passed on even auctioning it. Last weekend I believe the facility manager had not been in these units. He was just as surprised as us at a few he thought would be better.

I have been one busy gal. I found a sale last weekend just by chance and asked my husband if he wanted to go with me. I had never been to this facility and figured why not though the store is overflowing. I figure a small locker with a few boxes will fit. So we show up Saturday morning and find two guys waiting. They were very happy as the manager had told them if no one else showed he was cancelling.
First unit wasn't bad but was mostly furniture. Not what I was looking for and apparently not what the others wanted either. Next unit wasn't bad. Small table a few computers and several boxes (one marked camping stuff and an ice chest). I figured what the heck so I bid $25.00. No one else wanted it so it mine. Two more units are garbage no bids.
The manager opens the next unit and I just had to have it. Furniture... I really don't need it but... So I go toe to toe with the local bike guy. Not sure why he wants it but I win for $350.00. Ugh not sure where I'm going to put this stuff?
Local bike guy buys a unit full of bags for $25.00. Says his son wanted a unit.
Next manager opens a 10 X 20 unit. My husband gasps. Man am I in trouble. He pays $50.00 for it. I am mad by this point because I have told him I don't have anymore room (he is not part of my resale business) Lots of boxes and some furniture.
10 units in total. I bought 3 and the bike guy bought 2. Now its time to load. First two units are on the second floor. Where is the elevator? They don't have one! We have to haul my furniture unit down the stairs! Ugh.
So I am in a total of $425.00. First unit wasn't great but will double my money on it easy.
Second unit was full of good stuff. Antique sofas (two matching) should bring around 800 to 1000 dollars at auction. Antique wash stand, two vintage City of LA oil lanterns, vintage gold room divider, misc nicknacks and lots of books.
Third unit (husbands unit) was not as bad as I thought even a lot of it is still outside. Very nice high end leather coffee table, old tin toys, box of fenton glass, I will do very good on this unit but there was also lots of kitchen garbage, toys and clothes (like someone packed in a big hurry) full of rat (not mouse) poop and pee.
Hubby asked that I leave him home from now on until the loading part. Which I quickly agreed to. LOL If I let him he would have bought them all.

@ drbecker check that airsoft pistol. My son has two glocks that are not made anymore and they worth about 120 to 160 each on e-bay. He says there are other brands that are worth more. You never know.

eBay / Re: Free Auction listings by invitation only~my bad~

I have only ever sold one thing on ebay and got the same offer. It was a Bose clock radio that sold for $165.00. I didn't realize those things were worth so much. I was going to mark it $30.00 and put it in the store until my husband set me right.
