Craigslist / Re: Do you get more text messages than calls or emails?
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:31:54 AM »
I definitely get more emails than anything, but that's because I don't put my phone into the listing. I'm going to start today with my listing refresh, so I'll have a better idea of which I receive more of.

I would have bid $200 max. Those sized planters are tough to sell. It's the size, the style, the time of year. Everything is bad. Plus, with that many, I'd have to store them somewhere, that's an added fee. I wouldn't have even bid on that locker.

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Scams
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:23:05 AM »
Most scams I run across are more interested in getting your information rather than getting your cash. If you get a response that says "email me at '[email protected]'". It's a phishing attempt. They'll use that email response to hack into your email and search for bank emails and other personal information.

In regard to phone numbers, this scam can be done the same way with text messages. They use a text response to hack into your phone's email and get these same emails.

You should give the lady a break, she's already been cut off at the knees.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Setup Lockers !

We have a chain of facilities around here that sets up lockers, they split locker contents to advertise large numbers of auctions to bring bigger crowds. They cover CRT TVs with blankets to try to add "mystery" to the locker. It's the most blatant tampering of lockers that I have ever seen or heard of.

PayPal / Re: I HATE PAYPAL!!! Reserves are killing my business!!!
« on: October 31, 2013, 03:38:39 PM »
When I did call Paypal regarding the hold. They told me that it was because the items sold were listed as high risk due to forgeries. I didn't think it was up to Paypal to decide what items are more susceptible to being forged.

The items that were held was a Woodrow (Appalachian Bluegrass Instrument) and a brass trivet from Virginia Metalcrafters.. Nothing crazy..

It's not killing me that they're being held, but still.. it's principle!

I hoping that as the temps drop the people stay home in the heat. Around here, we can see temps as low as 30ish.. Although it only seems to last a month or two.. We won't see temps like that until January, but hopefully a few brisk 40ish days in Nov./Dec. is enough to keep the wusses at home.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Putting together ideas for an ebook..

You've got a good idea there! I could certainly put together a group of horror stories, funny stories, amazing buys, duds, etc. for a book. However, I think to more solidly paint the picture of the story, I'd have to have pictures.. which I don't have.

one thing to check out is to find out if its a rolling reserve or if its jjust the standard 21 day holds. if you have a rolling reserve you should see a pretty noticable bar at the top of your main paypal screen. ill attach a screenshot to show you.

No it's the standard 21 day reserve. All of a sudden, I've got holds for items when I have been selling on ebay semi-aggressively for months now.

As a "veteran" and someone who can speak with some eloquence, I will say that this forum is the easiest to understand, most fruitful when it comes to ideas, strategies, etc. and therefore the best, in my opinion. I also subscribe to the Storage Treasures newsletter but I've stopped reading them because of the points listed by Alias. It's a perfect example of someone writing just to write. As a writer, I can tell that these blog entries are just written to keep a schedule. Certainly not to pass off any kind of real information.

I come here to find what is working in other parts of the country, get tips and tricks on selling, and share in our successes and failures. We are the most tight knit community in this genre of message board forums, which is a dying form of communication on the internet.

So Lance can come on here and talk as much trash as he wants, those of us with brains, that can actually put a sentence together and the commas in the right places can see through the BS. Lance is suffering because the veil is starting to lift, and the grooms are seeing just how ugly the bride is. His strategy, looking at it on the surface, seems to be to take out the competition at the knees. Not a very good plan of attack. Because the only way to make an ugly bride worse, is to make them a *****.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Using Facebook to sell. Works great!
« on: October 31, 2013, 09:03:57 AM »
Exactly! There are open groups where you can see posts before joining, but these yard sale groups are largely closed groups to weed out spammers. Once you join a group, Facebook suggests other groups in the right margin specific to your area.

You could do a group search and see what comes up. I'm not sure with the new Facebook graph system if groups and businesses only pull up in your specific area, if they are described as serving a specific area.

I did a search for "Find all groups named "fresno yard sale"" and the following link is what pulled up..

https://www.facebook.com/search/str/fresno%20yard%20sale/groups-named

Of course, i don't know what town you live in, or what semi major area you live near.. but for Fresno, there are quite a few groups that sell items online through Facebook.

If there are no groups like this in your area, I strongly suggest starting one! Create the group, the rules, put up 30 or so items on the group page, and advertise your page on busy groups in your specific area.. I make 2-3 sales a week through these pages, but it has brought in 100+ customers into the shop in the last month. About half of those customers bought something that wasn't on the group page.

I don't think they'll go away, but they won't kill the live auctions by any means. I think that the company that creates a way to integrate the live auction with the online will be the one with the clearest advantage, ala proxibid.com or auctionzip.com. Just have to figure out the logistics of having a "mobile" auction available to stream online for out of area bidders.

I'll be back up in NJ this weekend.. Won't be up there the right days to attend auctions, but I'll definitely be hitting up some estate sales, etc.
