Other forms of buying ?

Why not?  I for one have been expanding, finding I do well buying single items at fleas, estate sales, yard sales; I bet there are other sources too.

I vote yes.

The next logical step to gain viewership is to add attractive, scantily-clad women - I'll guarantee you that's where we're headed.  Maybe "Storage Strippers..?"   :P

Now what channel, day and time is that on?  I'll be happy to write reviews.  ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: iPad for research at remote locations
« on: December 09, 2011, 09:31:38 AM »
Well, the Ipad has made its debut at a Thursday flea I go to for buying purposes only.

Saw a nice set of 6 Motorola walkies with charger. Guy was asking $500. I went around the corner and got out the Ipad and looked them up on eBay. One set was "asking" $1,000, two others asking $700 and $800. The only COMPLETED has sold for $500.

I offered the guy $250 but he would only come down to $450. Obviously not a deal. When he said "let me show you on my phone" (he had also done this earlier), I said "No, let me show you on my phone." When I pulled out the Ipad he said "That's a phone?" but he knew better. As we talked it turns out one of the eBay items WAS his.  We ended on a good note, but this kind of buying only works when you have a seller who doesn't know what he's got. Moving us on to the next item.

****

Found a little yellow box ... an industrial tester. Walked away, looked it up. Last eBay sale was $60. Bought the item for $5 and am hoping for $60 or so. If it does sell for that, that's 4 future months of data plan at $15 a month.  ;D

It would appear that the new phrase is "Bring It"

I agree with that, though after one show no one has "brought it".  When the producers try to duplicate the cast and other elements of the original show they are running a big risk as it's hard to truly do that.

So far, I am disliking every cast member, each in their own way. The Barry lookalike truly has not got the personality that Barry does.

The female interest...OMG (sorry, I NEVER use that but seems appropriate here).

The two Smith boys....is there a truck big enough for them AND whatever they buy?

The non-Texan ? Jury still out on him, but so far nothing outstanding.

So, producers....BRING IT !

Flea Markets / Re: Niches...
« on: December 09, 2011, 08:57:17 AM »

We do however (try to) organize everything.  Housewares on one table, tools in another area, collectibles have their spot and so on and so forth.

We ALWAYS get a corner space.  Yes we pay a bit more, but you've got traffic from two directions plus 'elbow' room.  And the added benefit of not having to maneuver the truck when quitting time arrives.

These two paragraphs (above) are the approach I take as well. If you occupy the SAME spot week in and out it helps too as the regular shoppers look for you (and will comment "Where were you last week?") if you miss a day.

Within the corner lot the organizing by item is good too. On my corner space the "round the bend" space might have seasonal stuff (camping, outdoors small furn, Christmas, etc). Hey if this approach works for Target it works for us.

When my market recently shifted locations by about 500 feet I researched the upcoming new spots and picked the corner I wanted. So far it's been great and customers have commented about the good and bad qualities of the market  promoters wisdom in making the change....usually, people don't like change, but it happens and you have to work with it (like more "buyers" at auctions..... ???).

So has anyone else advertising they buy storage lockers? Is it helpful or does it hurt?

I certainly don't just put it out there ("I buy storage lkrs."), but if some one asks me "Where do you get your stuff?" or "Why are you selling it?" my response is "I just buy and sell stuff."

If they pursue it ("Where do you buy?") I just say "Here and there."  They usually back off by then, but if they say "Do you go to those storage auctions?" I respond "Sometimes, but the crowds are huge and the prices are high."

After them asking three questions, that usually is the extent of the conversation. No matter what, it pays to be in control of the situation and to not get involved in that aspect of the transaction. They are there to buy "x" not to start a new career.

*****
On a side note, this kind of conversation normally happens at a meeting for a Craigslist sale. At the flea market this type of question is seldom asked.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Went to my first auction today and....
« on: December 08, 2011, 10:48:17 PM »
the fact that the vets didn't bid a lot on units said a lot to me.

"It's deja vu all over again."

And it's OK to start your own thread, but as Craig... said, in January I'm thinking of changing the long-running "LookeyLoos" thread for each month to....."Auction Scene...January, 2012" etc, etc.

Watching and listening is a good thing...if only more would do it before buying foolishly.

2nd locker, i lost on the 2nd locker but went back and bought 3 bmx bikes from that guy.  I made 1100.

Thanks for your honest detailing of your two lkr buys. It's also telling that you made your money by "picking" the bmx bikes which is something you really know about.

The rest of your assesment was right on too.

Fortunately for those of us (probably including you) who are going to be around for a few more years, the MAJORITY of new buyers aren't as smart and will make enough mistakes that they will give up on this "profession".

At a sale I went to (with 25 lkrs available) one new guy (none of us had ever seen) bought 5 of the 25. I got one, my friend got 2, other regulars got one or two each. Waiting to see if the new guy is around my area the next few months.

Got another one today; 5 x 10 for $150. Coming out OK, though nothing great. Tools are sort of ordinary but add up.
Some DVDs (almost always do well at flea for $3 each).

Crowd and prices OK. Couple of big lockers went in the $500 to $650 range; I stayed away from the big ones, but their prices were right on I thought.

The lkr I got yesterday is getting better. Bottle of Scotch, uopened. Nice shiny Kodak digital in a velour bag...I can't seem to sell digitals for more than about $30 though; there are so many new ones at $100.

The Smiths…neither has missed a meal in a while.
Victor…not from Texas!
Lesa Lewis…a 5 YEAR VET ! (and her employee Jerry) Again and Again Resale store.
Moe …. The Barry of the West ! (Hey, the shtick worked in California !)

Lesa likes to say “Bring it !”
Moe likes the lamps for $525.
Victor get maple dressers for $250

One of Moe’s lamps he values at $275 (price at Walmart …$45 new).
Moe gets something wrapped up….A lithograph…supplied by producers ?
A Peter Max lithograph…even I know this artist’s work….but I’ve never gotten one!

A new lkr up for grabs…. Contractor lkr ?  Showcases, tools..the Smiths like it.
Bubba…you go boy !  Bubba I have two words for you….Jenny Craig !

Lesa has to get one to get her feet wet….not today though.

Victor’s maple dressers turn out to be….PARTICLE BOARD ! But, he gets body armor in black.

One of the Smith boys says “This accent is fake. I just use it so people will underestimate me.” IT’S WORKING … my estimate of him can’t be printed here.

Overall...pretty much what I expected...continues the tradition of the people finding at least one great item in the locker they buy.

Join in...what do you think ?  As good as, better than .... you know what.  ;D

First half hour is the California guys at it again.

Jarrod gets one for $2,200.
Dave gets one for $750.
Derrell gets one for $2650.
Barry rides away in his skeleton jacket on a motorcycle.

Jarrod and Brandi find a visible safe in their lkr..neither had seen it; THEN…
Jarrod finds….another SAFE ! (2nd time my two safes in 1 lkr theory has come through).

Dave’s estimates of his item values are off the wall ($300 to $500 for two networking items…they often don’t sell because they’re outdated by the time they see light of day).

Derrel…likes his for value...fancy old trunk ….inside NADA !  Cigar Humidor (bet even the cigars are still good!). Humidor worth…..$1,300 up !

Jarrod’s small safe….coins. Locksmith for big safe…he drills it out just like my guy did a couple of months ago. (back for the reveal)…AFTER THE COMMERCIAL!

J’s big safe…..incredible…actual gold coins, some from old ships (Spanish Reals). I had to smile for the couple they were having such a good time ! Coin guy estimates $3,500 plus for the balance of coins (J. already sold $800 worth).

Hester has an accident…LOOKED STAGED !

Second half hour is Storage Wars Dallas…..Yee Haw ! (sorry Texans…we are REQUIRED to yell Yee Haw for this show. As one of my area auctioneer’s has sometimes observed “it’s the law!” (he is wrong too).
