General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Auction near home

Michigan is the middle east of the west.  I spent 27 years of my life in michiganistan.  Born and raised.

Spent a couple months up that way, in a border town. Hurley, WI and I think I remember it correctly, Ironwood, MI. Two states, two towns into one town, separated by a road with a train track bridge over it.

Not gonna lie.  So far the best thing I have purchased, that was unseen until I dug through the little 5x5 was a new canon printer still taped in the box.  Sold it for 99 bucks on ebay, but it was a bonus.  Hopefully the bigger better finds will be in the near future.

It all takes time, could be your very next locker, could be 10 years from now.

On furniture I usually dont deal with it unless its solid wood. I dont like couches since I usually end up getting the ones that are messed up, and its always on a side Icant see from the door. Particle board I cant even give away for free. So I stick to solid wood furniture. No matter the year.

Nice, keep us updated on what else you find. I think there is a 60% chance that the jewelry will be in there. 75% chance the camera. Reason I have it lower for the jewelry is because the jewelry in the photos could of been from a client of theirs.

Oh and by the way, since this has already been touched on, Im going to add my 2 cents. I like the idea as well that they put this one out. Puts a little more reality to it, which is a good thing. I dont however think it is going to change the amount of crowds we are dealing with though.

Also I do not think I am going to like the Dallas edition of SW. The people they picked for the lineup add to much of the "Texas" Cliche of a bunch of cowboys and what I consider "Redneck Mentality", no offense to anyone who may get offended at that quote. I will give it a few episodes, but if I still feel the same, I wont be watching it.

I cant be sure but somehow I felt real genuine from the unlocked show, like toward the end when Mark came up, you really got the sense that everyone hated him. I kind of felt bad for him cause he thought they were all 'friends'.

Thought it was cool at the end that the texas guys mentioned their show ruining the buisness as well.

I loved the look Brandi gave everytime Dave opened his mouth, she looked like she wanted to slap him a few times.

Well I could not sleep last night, so I end up watching the show anyway. Good thing to or I would of only been able to watch half of it. I pushed play on the DVR, and it only recorded 30 mins of the show. And I was like WTH. but at same time it ended from being cut off 30 mins early, it had started again live, 130am my time. So I watched it from my bedroom tv. (Only my living room has DVR).

jross....don't be too embarrased about this, but when I say SW Dallas, I mean "Storage Wars, Dallas"  ;)

Even I had the thought "southwest, Dallas" when I started using that abbreviation but even at that, Dallas is in the southwest portion of the U.S.A.

Interesting to hear that Texans can tell where each of them is from by dialects....makes sense, it's a big state.

lol, np. And its more than dialects. Most of it ya, but its also the way we carry ourselves, act, dress, etc, etc, etc. Hell even how we BBQ :)

Stories about Storage Auctions / Best thing you personally found in a locker
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:55:10 AM »
Whether it is a favorite piece, or most valuable piece.

My valuable piece:
Vintage Solid wood Oak Desk, absolutely no metal, very good craftsmanship. I got $250 for it. However if I sold it at a flea Market and not a yard sale I could of gotten $500 for it. Even more if I would of refinished the surface. Was worn pretty bad on the top of the desk.

My favorite piece:
An antique vice stamped with a patent of 1905. I dont remember the details about it. But company closed down in the 30's. So the 85lb vice I had to have been made between 1905 and 1930ish. Sad thing was it needed some work to make the vice clamp close, open it had no problem, but would not close. The way that company made them would of cost more to fabricate the replacement piece then what the piece would of been worth. I got $40 for it. If it was all fixed up I could of gotten a little over $100. So I was happy.

s.

@ Jrossjr, Remember that old saying. One man's junk is another man's treasure! I think thats why we are in this business in the first place.

This is true, yes, but literally trash is what I was referring to. Uneaten food, used toilet paper, stuff of that nature.

My question is, in this day of rampant bed bug scares, where would you find someone to buy a used mattress?

I am sure there are some people out there that would buy them, but I have a hard time trying to get rid of them for free. Although A buddy of mine will take all the mattresses I can give him. He likes to discard all the cushion material and then scrap the metal. To me that is to much work for a little bit of change the springs can give you.

Wow what a deal!  It seems people are turned off by really big lockers but I like them because there can be some really nice stuff hidden in there. I think that you will make out very well on that one. I could see one that size with what is showing going for over $1K on a good day I bought one that big for $40 once and it was a bust then again it did not look nearly that nice.   $325 is pocket change these days I bet you make a couple grand off that one.

I love big lockers, just hate the price that they are bringing around here.

Well, we'll have to see some episodes of course, but comparisons are bound to be made between the original and the new series. I think any of us have favorite shows of whatever kind and we become "attached" to the people in them whether we "love" or "hate" those characters/actors.

I like the CSI shows EXCEPT the one located in Miami....I don't like Caruso's character (or acting job) in that one; so I watch Las Vegas and New York versions. Kinda think I would watch all of the Storage War shows though unless they burn us out with overkill running the Miami and New York series as well as time goes by. I can imagine those last two locations COULD have some very interesting personalities. In the New York, New Jersey area there was a show about "scrappers" which I found fun to watch, but I think it only lasted one season.

I wonder why yall are saying SW Texas, Dallas is Northern Part of Texas. And yes you can tell the difference between people from south Texas, North Texas, and West Texas. Everything about the people are completely different from one region to the next. I am sure Travis can verify that.

Do a Google search on "Stradivarius value".

Here's just a piece of Wiki info:

The film The Red Violin was inspired by one of Stradivari's violins, the Red Mendelssohn (1721),[66] which is currently played by Elizabeth Pitcairn, heiress to the PPG Industries fortune, whose grandfather purchased it for her 16th birthday for $1.7 million at auction at Christie's London. She is one of the few soloists who performs the Red Violin Chaconne composed for the film by John Corigliano. The notion that the fictional violin is red because it is painted with the blood of the maker's wife, who died during childbirth, is a creation of the filmmaker and is yet unsubstantiated. The real violin is called "The Red Mendelssohn" because of a unique red stripe on its top right side, but how the stripe came about is unknown.

If you haven't seen the movie "The Red Violin" check it out. It's actually an "action" movie (but a high-class one).

Have not had a chance to google it yet, was working on some bikes to sell for this upcoming yard sale. But what you put here from the wiki is amazing. I as well did not know this.

Also I will not be watching the show tonight, to tired, will watch tomorrow after I get my inspection stickers, and while waiting on to help some one move a washer.

General Storage Auction Talk / Small clock like gears
« on: August 31, 2011, 09:46:02 PM »
I am trying to fix this music clown box made in 79'. I need a couple of gears though. Roughly about 1/4" in size and smaller. Anyone know where I can get these kind of gears at?
