We've found strippers clothes in two different units now and frankly, I haven't a clue what to do with them.  I certainly will not put them in my booth at the flea market and I don't want craigslist costumers coming over for that.  I'm not an ebayer, but I think that is the only way to do so without ruining my (very family oriented) reputation.

What do you do with items that you know have value, but really don't want to deal with?  I mean.....I can't even imagine giving those to Goodwill.

And I can't even do it all in one lot as I have sizes small & extra-large.

So what do you do with your stripper costumes?  Or are we the only ones who (continuously) find them?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 12.....December, 2011

Finally auctions again here in Tucson.  Very small crowd (about 15 people) due to weather.....we don't do rain here!
NO lookie-loos, only a couple newbies.  Pretty hardcore crowd.  At the first location there was only one unit up and it was a dandy.  Don & I both decided $550 would be a good price.  Went for $675 and I think it was worth it.....I just didn't want to gamble that much.  It was a 5X10 full with a few antiques showing.  Much accumulated dust and just a gem of a unit.  It was won by our version of Dave Hester.

On to the next site where we picked up a couple regulars.  5 units up for auction. All 5X10's.   First was kinda sparse with at least 3 mattresses and a bunch of junk.  Went for $35.

The next was a about the same, but with some 'decent' furniture showing.  It went for $375.

The 3rd was only about half full.  It had a gorgeous coffee table laying on it's side so you couldn't see the top, an old mirror, a beat to heck leather sofa and some kids items.  Went for $50.....to us....more on that later.

4th unit had some tools, a couple totes and some boxes.  Ended up going for $275.  The Milwaukee drill case  really drove the price up as everybody 'betting' on the item being in there.

5th unit~full to the rafters with junk and more junk.  It ended up going for over $400.

All in all~nice albeit soggy day here.

Our unit should net us about $200 or so when all is said and done.  I have a record-low one garbage bag (well plus the sofa) to take to the dump.  Should easily move the toddler bed, changing table and kids toys out at our local flea market.

The coffee table was in good shape and with minimal work should bring in about $75 to $100.  The art & mirrors are probably going to be the easiest sell as they are inexpensive and yet tasteful.  There is a Last Supper print that is in one incredible frame.  Anything having to do with Christ sells quickly here.

All in all an easy day.  We had no wow factor, but also didn't have a ton of work/stress/dirt.

On a side note......how many sterilite tubs/totes and the like can one household have?  Add in the 50+ milk-crates and I have enough storage to last me a lifetime!

Tomorrow is our busy day with 3 different auctioneers having sales and two being caravans.  Don & I will be splitting up and hitting the two caravan ones.

Hope to have a 'gem' story by tomorrow at this time~ 8)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Can't wait For Spring
« on: December 12, 2011, 07:06:11 AM »
Well I'd normally agree with ya, but here in Southern Arizona our spring (and fall for that matter) lasts all of a couple days.  Then it's summer or winter......***sigh***

We're getting ready to head out to a couple of auctions which kicks off a huge auction week here in Tucson.  2 facilities today, followed by numerous, different caravan ones Tues & Weds.
Forecast:  50% chance of rain all 3 days.  I see a u-haul rental in our future~ ::)

Where can I buy one of those switches and do they also come in adult sizes?

I've taken my girls to auctions before.  They are 10 & 11.  Didn't have much of a choice as Grandma (primary babysitter) was outta town and Dad was working.  They had a blast and most everybody enjoyed them.  Of course they are being raised to be polite and are always (yeah right) on their best behavior (in a setting as such) or they know they don't go again.

My youngest didn't enjoy it much and my eldest......just like her dad....."Mom, did you see blah....blah....blah....."  'shhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!' 8)

I think it depends on the kid but more so the parents.  The last auction we went to there was a guy there with about a 4 year old girl.  She was, for the most part, well behaved.  What irked me was her dad didn't bother to 'watch' her.  Often she was getting underfoot of many people.

Heck we had a local auctioneer bring his toddler to one of his sales.....now there was a handful of kid!!
Grin and bear it........

Flea Markets / Re: Niches...
« on: December 09, 2011, 08:42:03 AM »
The tables that look to be piled with nothing but crap everywhere I don't give a second glance.

Yep~lay it all out so folks can see what you're offering.  Always a task to accomplish, but I too walk past a table that I would have to 'dig' through.

I don't quite understand 'niches' as a storage unit buyer has such wide variety of items.  We've never bought a unit that was all one category.  And as such we've never had a swap meet run with a 'theme'.  I can see a niche as a picker, but that's another show altogether~ 8)

We do however (try to) organize everything.  Housewares on one table, tools in another area, collectibles have their spot and so on and so forth.

We ALWAYS get a corner space.  Yes we pay a bit more, but you've got traffic from two directions plus 'elbow' room.  And the added benefit of not having to maneuver the truck when quitting time arrives.

We're actually going to head out tomorrow morning and if we can find a couple spaces together (becoming more difficult as other vendors have found out about our little 'junky' flea market) I'll set up with my antique/retro items.  I'm finding the antique fairs aren't proving all that profitable and since we're there anyway........

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: "Wished I had the Money to do That"
« on: December 09, 2011, 07:08:04 AM »

So when we started this we decided we would not broadcast where we buy our items, not to inflate the shows.

So has anyone else advertising they buy storage lockers? Is it helpful or does it hurt?

That's a tough one as I often find myself biting my lip when asked "how long have you had it?"  or "why are you selling it?"  I usually end up telling folks how I got the 'item'.  I am not a good liar.....not real good at 'evading the truth' either.

I was doing a yard sale and traffic was slow (we live rural), so I ran another craigslist ad stating 'As seen on Storage Wars'.  It drew people in......

I'm now to the point of trying to keep my big, fat mouth shut, as I often have friends saying 'I've always wanted to try that'.......auctions in the Tucson area are busy enough without me turning others on to it.

And like you.......I ALWAYS stress the work involved.

The 'wish I had the $$$' thing seems normal to me.  A lot of folks think it takes a couple 'extra' grand to do what you're doing.  Perhaps that is what he was thinking.  Some see it as searching for treasure (which would be a luxury), while they have a 'real' job......many don't know that this is a real (physical, tough) job.

We primarily sell via craigslist and a swap meet.  We have numerous repeat customers and a few know where we get our stuff, but most do not.  Now if I can quit blabbing......we should keep it that way~

on a side note......have you found any 'gems' yet?  I'm awaiting a "treasure" post from you~

I do agree with a little kindness and manners go's along way unless your on the phone or texting while in line to see a unit than you will get pushed out! ;D

My mother taught me many moons ago.....
Two wrongs don't make a right.  Very few are courteous in this (or any other) business.  I have been pushed and shoved and oh don't even get me started on the smell.....try one of these things in Tucson in the summer.....ewwwww.....Can we use a little deodorant people?!

I've told a couple auctioneers here that I'm going to write an auction etiquette pamphlet that they can hand out before the start of each auction.  Funny nobody listens to the #1 rule of 'Women and children first'.........luckily I'm long and lean and can outwalk the best of 'em.

I give as good as I get, but when first starting out and not knowing the ropes, it really does help to be polite and yes.....perhaps a bit humble~

Mom lecture over now........

ps....brush your teeth, eat your veggies and by all means.......use the deodorant.   :D

how many of the other people you saw your first week or two out or that started with you is sitll doing it?

Can't think of one.  They pretty much all quit.

I went to numerous auctions alone (quite intimidating for a woman, let me tell ya) before I even had an inkling of bidding.  Then did so reluctantly, as I was using my husbands money (yes.....it's ours, but I was terrified of making a bad decision and then it would have been his....now on the other hand if I rocked it.....it still would have been his ***sigh***) and didn't like the risk of blowing it.

Fast forward to today and my husband is once again self-employed and able to go to the auctions with me.  Money is available without cutting into the 'savings' and I have a bit of a swagger.....ok.....it's more a limp, but you get the gist.   :)

This definitely isn't a 'job' for the instant gratification crowd~contrary to what they portray on TV.

be courteous.  That is something that is truly dying in this world.  A simple please and thank you can take you much further than the whining or grumping that is so common today.

If you want to be in the 'in' crowd treat others with respect.....that includes your fellow bidders, the facility managers and yes.....the auctioneer.  You'd be amazed at what it can net you.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Junk or 'gems'? Which do you prefer?
« on: December 06, 2011, 07:11:15 PM »

As soon as we find some gems will let you know. LOL

Well I hope your next unit yields some serious 'bling'!

We just sold our biggest gem.  The Pablita Velarde painting that I mentioned in the "What's it worth" forum.  It did take the trip to Santa Fe, but the $3500 check in my husbands pocket more than pays for the gas.

Now anybody interested in a solid oak, southwestern kinda dining set? :D

Things are very slow here in Tucson.  A full week without auctions.  Now next week there are quite a few going on.....hopefully enough to keep buyers/bidders spread out a bit.  And hopefully a unit for us, as we're running low on both the junk and gems~

What's it Worth?? / Re: Fine art~just how do you move it?
« on: December 06, 2011, 04:21:53 PM »
Final update~
My husband just called to say he is leaving Santa Fe with a check for $3500 in his possession!

So that ($525) unit netted us just over $4000!  And we still have 'stuff' to sell.

I do have to say it was an ordeal, from dealing with the galleries to my husband staying in Show Low AZ last night (at his moms) with NO heat.  Temp was 9 degrees.  But the heat is back on~repaired this morning before he left.  The painting is where it belongs.  And we have seed money for future endeavors (we were using our savings).

Yippee!

oh and I still have a Pablita Velarde original (too much water damage to be gallery ready).......

Go me!

General Storage Auction Talk / Junk or 'gems'? Which do you prefer?
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:08:43 AM »
We've won 5 units in our short time doing this and in that time have often wondered which was the better deal.  The particle board dresser set or solid oak dining set?  The Sidi bicycle shoes or the 5 pairs of tennies?  The Lowenbrau, Moosehead & Stroh's beer signs or the Pablita Velarde paintings?

Our last unit (10X20~3/4 filled=$625/$25 more than I wanted to spend, but I digress) netted us:
the above stated particle board dresser set~4 piece in excellent condition
the solid oak dining set w/ matching buffet~excellent condition
generator & many, many quality tools
Very nice stereo system~I'm keeping it......I know...I know....I know.....but I want it!
Beer signs and other misc. art

When we won the unit a fellow bidder offered to buy the dresser set.  I told him to let us see what we've got and he went with the caravan to the next auction.  Came back an hour later, checked it out and said 'nah'.  I even offered to 'discount' the price to $75.  Wife said 'NO!'.

Listed it on craigslist for $150 and sold it within an hour....with many 'buyers' to call back.

Now the high quality dining set on the other hand I've been sitting on for 3 weeks with nary a taker, although I did sell the buffet for $125.  Can't even get a nibble on the dining set.

Beer signs~sold  Fine paintings~hopefully selling today, but they came out of a unit we bought in Sept!

Generator sold immediately.  Took the remaining tools out to the swapmeet.  Cheap ones flew outta the booth.  The makita wormdrive like new......folks balked at the $75 price.  One old boy came through, knew exactly what it was worth and offered $60.  Called my husband and he said "make it $70".  Sold!

Just curious on how others feel about the junk vs 'gem'.  While I love the 'quality' items......I think I prefer the turn and burn of the 'junk' better.

What's your preference?  Turn and burn or quality over quantity?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Scrap metal - is it worth it?
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:26:58 PM »
We (okay....actually my husband) took in a load of scrap that has been accumulating on our property for a couple years.  Brought home $297 cash.  So yeah it pays.  But it is physical.

My husband is an electrician by trade and we know the value of copper.  Now learning the value of metals, such as aluminum vs steel vs cast iron vs......  pain to sort, so this load (less the copper) basically went in one load.

The chunk o' change today will definitely influence how I view 'junk' lockers in the future.  If you have the truck/trailer and a strong back, scrapping is a great source of 'additional' income.

And thanks to this forum.  It never occurred to me to cut cords off dead electrical items.

One auction today.  Cold and drizzly~rare in Tucson.  3 units.  Approx. 70 in attendance.  maybe 10 'regulars' and 5 serious bidders.   All units were 5X10.

1st unit:  a toilet, (icky) Christmas tree in box and some window shade screen thing= $35
2nd unit:  a nice entryway tile top table, some 'art' and misc. items= $170~I bowed out at $60
3rd unit;  first time I've seen a lock actually cut.  Opened the door and there was (crammed in) a sofa set, a truly scary looking mattress, misc. boxes and supposedly a coach bag (I did not see it, as I didn't linger at this unit).  A buddy said he'd go to $300......the unit went for over $700.

I've really got to do more research as following this one auctioneer has become huge and frankly......just not worth the time.  I did cut my teeth on an auction by him, but since........far too many newbies to make it profitable.

As of right now, no auctions (that I'm aware of) next week in the Tucson area.  The following week (Dec. 13th esp.) there are tons and my husband and I will have to split up in the hopes of 'stealing' a decent one~
