Other Forms of Selling / Re: How do you sell old books?

Thanks for your input though!

I've done a couple of experimental listings of silverware. More desirable patterns from what I can judge on the "sold" section.. I sold 1 baby fork and spoon set for $2. The other 3 listings hardly got any views. Could just be a timing thing. I typically list items that I don't have experience with 3 times. Each with different end days and times of day.

eBay / Re: Is EBAY super slow lately or is it just me?
« on: October 29, 2013, 11:51:45 AM »
Craigslist is dead as a doornail for me. I've moved all my items onto a Facebook page and share those items with various local yard sale groups and I'm doing much better.

Ebay has been busy for me though. Lots of sales this week. Made about $700 once these current auctions complete. Still have a few more vintage items to put out there too.

As for Craigslist, I think my ads have all worn out their welcome. Time to freshen them up a bit. Once these run through their 48 hour repost cycle, I'm going to pull them down for a week. Completely disappear, then repost with rock bottom prices to move stuff. Hopefully that'll work.

Other Forms of Selling / How do you sell old books?
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:05:20 AM »
I recently had a moving sale clean out and as part of this clean out I got some pretty old, first edition prints of books. Mostly kids books, most notably a Charles Dickens. I could go the ebay route, but looking up these books, they're selling but only at a rate of 1 a month or so.

So aside from ebay and amazon, how do you guys sell your older, antique books?

There are probably 20 estate sales a month around here. Within a 20 mile radius. However, "estate sale" has become a hit term.. meaning that people are really just having garage sales and calling them estate sales.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Garage/Yard Sale Leftovers
« on: October 27, 2013, 11:29:53 AM »
I visited a moving/estate sale yesterday and bought some really nice stuff. Coach and Kate Spade purses, some antiques. I gave them my card for the thrift shop and said, "If you guys are looking to unload some stuff at the end of the day, let me know and I'll swing by and pick it up." They called me and I boxed up all their leftovers and brought it back to the shop for free!

I got tons of antiques, old books, old decks of cards, ashtrays from Vegas. Tory Burch shoes, crystal collectibles, military stuff. It was a great haul and I didn't pay a cent for it!

PayPal / Re: I HATE PAYPAL!!! Reserves are killing my business!!!

Suddenly Paypal is holding my funds too. I didn't get the courtesy of a call or even an email.

Yesterday I picked up an antique Seth Thomas mantle clock with the key, pendulum and working AND a 1930's/40's Western Union Blanks box with porcelain sign AND the blank sheets for money orders and money wires for $20.

Dear Mr. Smith,

After sifting through boxes upon boxes of tools, I didn't think you'd be the type to be into big black rubber sex toys..

Dear Ms. Smith,

When you soil in your underwear, it's best to just throw them away.

If you have a working TV on top of a larger non working TV, and 40,000 cans in bags surrounding those TVs, and over 20 years of used pizza boxes on top of the cans, and clothes spanning from the 1940s-1980s on top of the pizza boxes, on top of the cans, on top of the TVs, and 87 cats burrowing into the pockets and sleeves of the clothes, and 38 years of a newspaper subscription on top of the clothes, the burrowed cats, the pizza boxes, the cans, and the TVs. Then you MIGHT be a hoarder..

What's it Worth?? / Re: New york Stock Exchange artwork
« on: October 23, 2013, 04:29:26 PM »
I think it's a reproduction. About $25-$30. He also did Grand Central Station, Ellis Island and other New York City landmarks.

The edges look too perfectly aged to be original. Also has the same patina throughout the paper. Looks much like his other reproductions out for sale now. The advantage to this piece is that it's the NY Stock Exchange, which I don't see available online. The disadvantage is, it's the New York Stock Exchange, market won't be as big as Grand Central Station or Ellis Island.

What I've learned, and it's not true in all cases.. But if you hold onto something for the best price, you may end up losing in the end. I've turned down offers on furniture that I believed was "worth more" and ended up taking less. You really have to know your market and when to take the deal and when to leave it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Tell us about your FIRST auction buy
« on: October 23, 2013, 03:50:23 PM »
My first buy on my own was a whole $20. There was a dresser worth $75 and 4-5 boxes. Not much of a shock, or a great story like calcoastgal. However, the lady who owned the stuff in the locker was present, all she wanted was a box of personals.. I let her have the box sight unseen. After the buy, a lady, who is a great friend now, yelled at me for just giving up the box. She said, "The box is yours now! You have to look in there for Grandma's pearls before you let it go!" I'll never know what was in that box, but I'll always wonder.

You need an ISBN to sell your book on any major market format like Amazon, iBooks, or Android right? That's what I was assuming.

Maybe I'll just become a YouTube Douche like Glendon Cameron..
