It's all my sisters fault!  Since having children, I've found 'alternative' ways to making $$.  From coppersmith to furniture refinishing.  My sis said I had to watch American Pickers & Pawn Stars.  I did and became a picker.  From there "you have to check out Storage Wars".  I did.  I dabbled and now am hooked.  Heck I don't even have time for my antiquing lately.

It's funny though....my first step in auctions was a storage auction where they sold individual lots.  My sis (she really is a driving force eh?) saw a little, lighted plastic lamb among a HUGE Christmas lot.  I told her no, as my Trooper can only haul so much.  There were two trees, about 8 tubs of lights, a couple boxes of ornaments and two flat boxes leaning against a wall.

Opening bid $25.  No takers.  $10.  No takers.  $5.  No takers.  $1 and for some reason, unknown to me, my bidders card turned in my hand and I bought it.

It did all fit in my trooper, but barely!

4 hours of sorting, testing and organizing lights found me with a lot that I sold on Craigslist (in July, in Tucson no less) for $75, enough lights to keep us twinkling for the next 20 holiday seasons and yes.....the little plastic lamb for my sister.

Oh the flat boxes contained board deer that had never been used and had $49.99 price stickers on them.  The lady that bought the lot really only wanted those as she trains horses and was going to set them up on her property to get the horses used to 'wildlife'.

When my husband was taking the 'dead' lights to our local transfer station the gal running the payment booth asked if she could have the lights to recycle......Great foray as I made money and nothing was wasted!

So yes.....I have my sister to 'blame' for all this!  And ya know.......she has never attended an auction herself.

Thanks sis~

How about Newbie and the Scene?
Ya know a take-off on Freebie and the Bean.....

I just discovered (yes...a day late) and finished reading the November 'edition'.  Very interesting read and educational to boot.  Dang prices seem much cheaper than in my neck o' the desert.

Gotta agree with money4nothing.  Went to a couple auctions yesterday and recognized maybe 3 outta 60 people.   Yep.....Newbies looking for the 'wow factor'.  I bid on 3 lockers~won 0.  One full of antiques, which I love.  I bowed out after $650 as the boxes towards the back were laying on their sides empty~major red flag!

Followed the crowd to the next facility, which was only a couple miles from home (we live rural).  The last unit was a 5X10 with a bunch of VHS tapes, books and maybe 2 chairs.  I told my husband it's a $25 locker that, with this crowd, will go for $250.  It was at $270 when I was walking to the truck......

Rough day~
Congrats to those making the quick strike.......wish that would happen here in Tucson~

***sigh***

Good thing they weren't Green Bay Packers colors!

I did find a brand new Packers pipe.  We pretty much dismantled it and will use the helmet portion as part of an art project for my youngest daughters teachers gift......re-purposing at it's finest!

Oh and I had to wash a Dallas Cowboys blanket.  I told my husband if I had to wash, dry and fold that thing he'd better get $10 for it.  He got $8.....I'm still not talking to him~
The injustice of it all.

Went to some auctions today wearing Vikes gear.  Was looking for sympathy.....well I found it~
Didn't help me get a locker though~:D

My sickest unit was from a junkie, used needles everywhere, in every box, every bag, etc. It took a long time to go through everything cause I had to touch everything very carefully. It turned out to be one of my most profitable lockers. I did'nt get stuck by anything if anyone is wondering, but I love telling the story to newbies at auction, kinda turns them off to the business ( I leave out the part about it being profitable!)

That's scary!  We all (I would assume) have the tendency to dig right in.  You are lucky you weren't stuck.
Glad you made a profit on it.

For me.....the stripper's suitcase full of all kinds of kink and some serious shoes.  I'm sure the shoes were once expensive, but after she (I'm assuming it was a she......) tried to paint them herself (she was no Rembrandt).....well let's just say.....there goes any profitability.  That came out of the icky unit.....and let me tell ya.....icky it was........

Warrants, drugs and porn have seemed to be the norm~found both in 3 outta 5 units~

You really do need to go to an auction and experience it before you even consider buying a unit.  I went to about 8 before I actually bid and another 10 before I finally won a unit.  I was too timid in the beginning and more than a bit nervous about gambling large sums.

Go to the auctions.  When they open the door, quickly (and quietly) evaluate what you see.  Do the 'mental' bid that MovieMan suggested (it's not only fun but a great way to gauge the crowd and your knowledge of auctions) and enjoy yourself.

It may all seem quite 'exciting' after watching folks on TV find numerous treasures, but I'll tell ya right now.....it's hard, dirty work.

As far the rest of your questions, from my personal experience:
We live on just over an acre, so we have plenty of room to store items, both large & small (there is an amazing amount of little, but valuable items).
We spend every Saturday at a local swap meet (flea market).
All furniture and large items are listed on craigslist.  We sell out of our home and have never had an issue or a weirdo or problem.  We are very rural and I weed out folks before giving out our address.
We make sure that everything is in proper working order or note that in ad or sales pitch~we like our reputation.
I often go to an antique fair with some of the higher end, older items.
We have numerous contacts within our community and what we can't move, but is still in usable condition, we can usually find somebody who can benefit from it.

The only way you can really learn the business is to experience it, but again......you must first attend a live auction and I would suggest that you do so as merely a spectator.  Talk to the people.  Most are willing to talk.....but take what they say with a grain of salt.....because I've heard some serious tall-tales from our local buyers~

Good luck.......

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Research research research

I danged near sold a painting for $20 at a yard sale before researching and finding it's an original worth a ton more!  Now.....I look it all up.  My husband will grab a tool and say $20......I ask exactly what it is and research it.....80% of the time he's on the money......I hate that! :D

The two most important things aside from common sense, after cleaning out a unit are research and connections~with all of the above......you should be ok~

$525 Purple long-john's are great.  ;D  We have done pretty good on the non keeper factor.. If I look at something to long I will want to keep it . My husband sees green it is gone... HAHAHAHa

Our problem is going to be family.... Do you have or if you come across this... Most are good but there is one that is going to be ruff... Just starting out we sell everything. So I will have to charge them. Might cause a war... LOL
The absolute worst for me was when we sold the 3 portable heaters.  Now granted I live in AZ, but dang it.....I hate being cold.  Still we needed the money more than I needed the comfort.  Of course when we bought the next unit and it was full of (very nice) power tools, my husband started to finagle a Makita worm drive......I ahem'ed him and reminded him of my heaters that we sold the week before~~~
That was one of the first things sold at the swap meet.  I think I may have seen a tear in his eye.......

 ;D

It's funny.....I think half the fun of buying units is personal 'picking'.  Our first unit was a 10X20 full to the brim for $525.  While digging through boxes of clothes, I found a brand-new, still in package pair of purple (I'm a Vikings fan~don't laugh......somebody has to be) longjohns in my size!  Those go into the 'oh that's mine' pile!

My eldest daughter keeps bugging me for an MP3 player.  We were digging though one of our not-so-great units and I found an old am/fm radio headset.....with antenna and all.  She got home from school and I tossed them at her with a 'Emma~we found your MP3!'  "MOM!!!"  She uses it everyday~though not when her friends are looking!

And we share outside the house too~my sister will often call and say 'I'm wearing my $500 sweater today!'.

I need to start paying for this stuff, but I guess until I actually start paying myself a wage......I'll keep pilfering the profits~ :D

Make sure you both have a clear idea on where and what you are going to do.Put in on paper so there is no mistakes or misunderstandings.Good luck..

Good, sound advice, as there are many unscrupulous folks in this business.....at least here in Southern AZ.

I've had a couple folks approach me about 'splitting' a unit.  Unless I have it all in writing ahead of time, I wouldn't touch it.  I did discuss it with one gal and told her that if I did it, we'd have to have an agreement that if either wants a particular item, that it must be paid for upfront.

I don't think I'd want to split a unit, as half the fun is in the discovery.......I don't want to share that with anybody but my husband~

Best of luck to you~

Flea Markets / Re: Black Friday Results??
« on: November 27, 2011, 08:25:32 AM »
I neither bought nor sold on Black Friday.  Was still trying to get over the tryptophan~
Did the swap meet (flea market) yesterday.  We really only expected to do about $100 or so as our inventory was getting pretty depleted, but ended up doing about $250 and on the way home got a call from a lady who's interested in a buffet I have on craigslist.  She should be out this morning......so hopefully that pays off too!

I told my husband we'd better get a unit this week or I'll have to get back to all those furniture restoration projects that are at the back of the property......funny that is what I used to love doing....now......I'd rather turn and burn~

Love the 'easy' money~

I get such a kick outta newbies.  They always ask 'is it like they show on TV?'  "not even close!" is my response.  When a newcomer throws triple the value on a trash unit I chuckle and think that'll keep 'em from coming back.

Our 3rd unit was icky.....we've almost recouped, but dang was it nasty doing so.  Made me rethink my chosen profession of junk dealer~ :D

Luckily I'm still making money off my first and last units!

Well played, my friend... well played.

If they start jerking you around on the timeframe, just maintain the tough stance.

Congrats!!
Thanks!  I told my husband that if they offer him one cent less  to tell them he would call me and I'd put it on Santa Fe Craigslist titled "I am here with a Pablita Velarde TODAY only!"......that should nix any shenanigans~

I'll let ya know~

I feel kinda like Daryl......'I like the new me'......  8)

update~just sent an ultimatum email to both the galleries involved stating that if either wants it we are willing to sell it outright for $3500.  If not, we'd be making it available to the public.  Within 5 minutes the phone rang and Golden Dawn says they want it, contingent on it's being as we represented.  It is.

Said they can't do anything until the first week in Dec., so we'll see......but it looks like playing hardball may have paid off!

Perhaps I should make a habit outta being the tough girl~ :D

Hey Patrick~whew....glad to know you're not part of that group!

I've tried gallery after gallery after dealer after broker after.......
I really do believe I'm gonna have to make the trek to Santa Fe.  My husband chuckles as I sit here typing humming Do you know the way to Santa Fe......yes.....I know it's San Jose.....

I don't know why I'm worried about alienating galleries as they are not giving me what I want anyway.....just hate the idea of burning a bridge~

Thanks again for the help.  Gotta go now......I swear I just saw another black helicopter~ :D
