I research as many of the owners as I can find. I find that I end up with better units if I know a little about who owned the locker. My best locker was owned by a husband and wife that got a divorce in the middle of a major remodel on their home. Her facebook page even had before and during pictures of the remodel. When the unit was opened and i saw the furniture I had a really good idea what was in all of the boxes. I paid $1100.00 for the unit which I would have never paid if I hadn't researched. It ended up being better than I expected. I have made over $4000.00 and still have quite a few high end items that I haven't figured out how to sell in my local area to get the best profit. (two sets of silver flat wear, antique books, antique light fixtures,)

If I know that the unit belongs to a say 22 year old that lives in a more undesirable location I'm probably not gonna be as interested in it. If the unit belongs to an older person that lives in a nicer area usually the items in it are better. Also having the unit numbers give you the upper hand over other bidders, in my opinion, because there have been a couple of times that units have been auctioned in a sale that were not on the published list. A few looked really nice but I have a feeling they were staged by the manager and stayed away from them.

Why oh why do I keep going to sales in the beach towns? Either the people are bums or the lockers are picked. Three facilities with a total of 7 units. There was only one I would have bought. It had a dozen boxes, two plastic bins, a nice hand stitched bed spread and a nice fold up lawn lounge chair. $50.00 was my max. The locker went for $300.00 to a guy that shows up every once in a while and spends way to much money. Really... Every other unit had at least one set of mattresses and several had crappy couches. The dump fees would have cost more than the units were worth.

Oh well on to a caravan tomorrow that usually has good units. Think I will stay from the coastal towns for a while.

Bought a unit a while ago with one of those maple hutch type desk tops (no desk to match). Pushed it off in a corner (not sure why I didn't throw it away). Got the idea to flip it upside down and attach legs to it. (got legs from an old table from the local furniture refinisher for 10 dollars). Put a top shelf on it. Need a coat of paint but have been offered 150 for it. Should be finished next week. I will post pictures if I can figure out how. Love making money on something I should have thrown away.

Wow nice sang. Cracks me up how people act. As my dad always says "they put their pants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us". LOL

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Kids at Auctions

We have a couple of companies here that have gone to no one under 18. I understand the rule but there is one mother and daughter team that brings the two year old. She never gets out of her stroller and they take turns looking in the unit. I really don't see a problem with them. Then there is me who takes my sixteen year old as ofter as I can. He is my electronics expert. He looks older than he is so he has never been questioned.

It is sad that a few ruin it for those that make their kids mind and most of the time the parents are newbies and you never see them again.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Port Wine? (Oporto, Portugal)

LOL Around here we have special cooled locker facilities just for wine storage. I haven't ever seen any of them hold an auction but I'm sure they have people go delinquent. Wine can be so tricky I'm not sure I would want to bid on a unit if they did. Might be fun to watch though.

Alias is right on this one. If wine isn't kept at the optimum temperature and lying on its side so the cork stays moist it goes bad. Once the cork dries out air can get to the contents and spoil it.

I live in wine country so I have found wine in several lockers. I open the bottle dump the wine out and recycle the glass. I'm not gonna chance a bad bottle of wine.

Craigslist / Re: "Wanted" section of CL

Wanted and free are my haunts on CL. I have sold quite a bit of stuff to people wanting things. The other listing section I check quite often is barter. You never know what you can get rid of and maybe get your lawn mowed or sink fixed.

So my online unit ended up having some Marilyn Monroe framed art in it that was well taken care of. Sold the appliances yesterday for 150 and have a total of 165 in the unit so should come out with an ok profit.  Slow week which is to bad as it is very hot and would detour most from coming out. Two day of caravans the end of next week.

MovieMan I'm gonna guess about 1500.00 for the unit.

Happy Bidding All!!

Auction this morning wasn't to bad. 11 units and about 12 buyers. I wish the units were better. 2 didn't sell at all. (those scary mattresses) If I hadn't already bought the online unit I would have come home with one unit. (would have had to make a second 40 mile one way trip it get everything and didn't think it was worth it.)

Online unit was not a bad one. Nothing spectacular but it had quite a few nice large framed art picts of Elvis and Marilyn.
Those will be the profit as the appliances will cover the cost of the unit. Already sold the dryer for $50.00.

Vacation the last part of June and first part of July. Came home to find an auction online. First online unit I have purchased but hope the locker is as good as it looked. Washer and dryer, stove, refridge, dresser, headboard, water cooler, lots of boxes $155.00. Should be able to make a nice profit if all of the appliances work.

Tomorrow morning brings 12 units. One of my favorite facilities and the best auctioneer. Will post how it went later.

I don't use my awning often but I have a friend that uses 10 lb weights (like the ones from a weight bench). He puts a screw through the hole and attaches them to the tab on the bottom of the post. It works great and the weights are flat so they don't take up much room to store.

Flea Markets / Re: First weekend of the month.
« on: May 04, 2012, 10:24:59 PM »
Will be hitting the Sunday Flea Market this weekend to off load the stuff that I don't like to sell in the store. I have some stuff that isn't moving from the store that is going as well. I never look forward to the early morning (I am not a morning person) but this is the best weekend to get rid of stuff.

I have been to one of the Whittmore auctions in my area. I wasn't very fond of the way they hold the auction. It took over an hour to sell half of what I thought was a crap unit. Just didn't have the time that day to stick around all day.
Auction started at 10:00 and I talked to some friends that stuck it out until 4:30 that afternoon. I will try another when they come back to my area if I have the time. We only have one facility on the coast that Whittmore auctions at and I don't think they do this one very often because it is off of their beaten path.

Please don't get me wrong I am willing to sit all day at an auction. This whole crazy thing started because I love buying box lots at the local Sunday auction house. One Sunday about a year ago they announced that they were doing a storage locker sale the following week. My mom and I thought what is a storage locker but a huge box lot? Let the crazy, dirty, hard work begin.
