What's it Worth?? / Re: Portfolio Billiard Light
« on: September 18, 2011, 09:35:01 PM »
Lowes Home Improvement carries the Portfolio line, but if this came from a locker it has been my experience that items can be 2 or more years old and no longer carried or even manufactued and thus become harder to research.

My GUESS is that it was probably about a $200 fixture...but that is just an opinion.

Something like an old Bose speaker or receiver would be easier of course or an old Nikon camera or an old 16mm projector or an old Jimmy Durante plastic nose. (well maybe not the last one, and most people on these forums won't even know who Jimmy Durante was).

IN WA trhe personals are given to the managment and they store them for one year. If not picked up in one year they ar e tossed.

In my area of California it varies widely.

1) Some managers say they could care less about the personals..go ahead and throw them away.

2) Others say they'll take personals but indicate they are RARELY picked up...like 98% don't pick them up.

3) I have found that if the lkr buyer takes an interest in getting the personal photos, etc back to the frm owner
that the former owner will buy back some items as well, but it often happens they don't follow through
on even getting their pics back, so not a biggie.

Nice Grab MM
Ps
Don't forget to leave Your name and address with the office so they can pick up there personal stuff  ;D

Despite two live contacts with the frm owner and two "answering machine" contacts, this flake has not made any sustantive effort to get back MANY old photograph albums....many of them her mother's.

Pretty soon they all go to the dump. I'M not in the business of storing someone's stuff when they don't pay for that effort. Frankly, there will be a certain joy in throwing that history away.

******
Meanwhile the fellow who tried to help her out by coming around and asking for "compassion" for her asked if the stuff was still in the locker.....oh sure, I've just been SITTING ON IT for three weeks waiting for her $1,000. GIVE ME A BREAK.

He said if it was still available he would pay $1,000 for it. Well, fat chance buddy as I have already made $750 profit, still have a lot of smalls left and the big items are not yet sold. Probably will be renting lkr for a 2nd month hoping not to move some of the bigs.  Safe has two inquiries but nothing serious yet.

I laughed also on Hester's 'I grossed over one million dollars last year', like that should immediately have them build him an alter and begin worshiping him, until Daryl pointed out the reality that gross doesn't mean anything, and asked how much he netted.  Hester never answered that.

Yuuuup !

Well, considering the size of his biz, (workers, store size, auction site) It wouldn't be surprising that he did that much...but I can't blame him for not telling what his net was; even though he is a big self promoter no businessman worth his salt would reveal his bottom line. I would have felt better if HE had said as much.

The "live" aspect of the "unlocked" show comes through a bit, but it's not really live as far as I can tell, and EDITING is a producer's way of making things seem one way or the other.  While the conversation and reactions seem a little more candid than the shows themselves, none of these people is so foolish to shoot themselves in the foot TOO much. Their success is dependent on the show's success despite the fact that "outside" the show they still have day to day businesses to run.  The show has helped them all significantly one way or the other. This is all my opinion.

What say you?  What might this thing go for?

Judging from the quality of the workmanship (that I can tell from the pics) I would think $100 or so; maybe $75.
That would be without the furniture. With furn perhaps double that.

I sold a dollhouse kit (new in box) for $75 from whatever the company is that is known for them; been a year or so ago so don't remember the name.

The problem as usual will be finding that buyer. Your item is not exactly "shipable"  but a local pickup only on eBay might get you what you want. How about an eBay search for "antique dollhouse" ?

Flea Markets / Re: Niches...
« on: September 16, 2011, 08:15:59 PM »
I was thinking the next couple marketsof trying tools and if it works then buying off ebay for the niche to support auctions.

Any advice on this subject.

IMHO, this won't work. The people selling tools on eBay have gotten them cheap at flea markets and hoping to make more on them at eBay, not the other way around. You would be paying for item, paying for shipping...won't work...but again, just my opinion.

Jackass had the high bid (about 800 bucks), and this stunned expression.  You could tell he'd been doing the bidding just to play Dave Hester and screw people out of their money.

The old timer just walked by him after the auctioneer called 'sold' and pointed at him, and he simply said 'you **** people, you get ****ed.  Bid if your serious.  Otherwise watch your goddamned tv show and play the lottery.'   I thought that was brilliant.  The jackass just disappeared after that.

And THAT is justice !   Great story.

Just curious on how many trash runs you have had to make on this unit?

Why it's just like the two TV shows....no dump runs !  ;D

But actually, if I had loaded my van with the trash it would have been 2.5 to 3 loads. As it happens, I got rid of the trash in the following manner.

1) The prop mgr at the facility let me use theirs for smaller stuff which I poured out of boxes rather than throw the
whole box in...makes for a "tighter" dump load. This I did 3 times for maybe 8 boxes.

2) The prop mgr at my main storage facility (where I have had a unit for almost 8 years) lets me do the same thing
on a regular basis. I dumped maybe 4 boxes there.

3)  I paid a guy $10 to take 3 mattresses on top of the load he had in a big trailer. This would have been the biggest
item I had to get rid of.

4)  Finally, I had the ratty, cheap footlocker, an old antique chair beyond salavage and some other "bulky" stuff....they
went "clandestine" style over the top of a 40 yard dumpster 1 block away at a construction site where mostly the
cardboard rolls from thousands of yards of carpeting were being dumped.

*****

Other stuff that I didn't want to sell went by the box load to nearby Goodwill, and one load of those boxes was sold to
one of the guys I help out by selling to cheap. It was 6 boxes for $20...he might sell all that for $80 or so and we are both happy.

More work perhaps (negotiating, figuring out, etc) than going to the dump, but it saved me maybe $75 for three loads, and the gas. The time involved would have been about the same amount using any technique.

California is a breeding ground for higher quality simply because of the real estate, business, etc.

Steve, what state are you from?  If you are from California, what part of California?

California is not all SOUTHERN California, and southern California has more than it's share of junk lockers too.

As to the reality of either Storage Wars and Auction Hunters, it has been my premise since they began last DECEMBER that these shows needed to show more reality about the business even though they want to show the BIG finds.

Sure, the show would not be a success if EVERY show portrayed the dozens of lkrs which were either AVERAGE or LOSERS, but I would still like to see ANY of the 4 SW participants engage  in a trip to the dump. I'd love to see Brandi in one of her short skirts throwing stuff over the edge at my local dump !  ;D

Nice, very, very similar to yours. How did you find that link?

Well, I'll give you 50% of the credit for the research (but not 50% of the income from the sale).

I took your Celtic idea and broadened it to "English" and then my blanket idea and came up with "English Blanket Chest".

The resulting link was about #5 on the google list I think and when I got to page one I did a search within their site and found the twin to my chest. A closer match you could not ask for.

*****

Looked on eBay but found nothing similar. Haven't decided how to sell it or for what price, but anything like $250 to $300 would probably do it (unless I go for the gold like the antique dealer's do).

The "hits" just keep on coming.  This is the antique chest that was high up in back of the locker. It has come down and out now and I posted a thread on it in the "What's it worth" area here. See this link.

http://storageauctionforums.com/index.php?topic=1718.msg9470

Check that link to see what I found out about this chest...as one poster said "It's cool."  And he is right...hopefully "cool" will turn into "cold, hard cash" !  ;D

Bingo ! Found it !

It's called a traditional English blanket chest; at the antique dealer link below you can see 5 or so pics of theirs and it's similar enough to mine to make a good comparison.

Their asking price?  $550.

People who watch Storage Wars for the first time are pretty much just ordinary folks who either didn't know anything about this business, or had a 3rd cousin who did it 5 years ago one time....this is just a generalization of course, but I think A LOT of the first time and then 6th time viewers fit this description.

At some point, some of these people become lookey-loos, then maybe occassional buyers and then maybe even more frequent buyers.

My question is, in the beginning, what is the general population's belief about how TRUE the "shows" stories really are?

****

The girl at my regular gas station today asked me if I watched them and after a simple "yes", she gushed on about the show where DAVE got the vending machines. She thought that was great...and realistic. I gave her my view and I could see she still wanted to believe..."well, they live in southern California."  True, but there are dog lockers there as well.

So, what responses have you gotten from people who know what you do .... buying lkrs?  Are they all as blind as the clerk at the gas station?

Definately more local, I have tried like 20 combinations of words to find this thing, but nothing.

Did you try "nuts and bolts folk art" ?  I did and got this (see link below). Pieces on there from $25 to $200.
