eBay / Re: China set
« on: October 11, 2013, 12:22:36 PM »
Selling as replacements is always the easiest way to go. I sold 18 pieces to one lady last week because she had a matching set that she got as a wedding gift. Don't forget about craigslist either! Put up the china, but individually list prices. You'll find that someone is looking for a dish because they just dropped one.

It's true that people don't think of china like they did back in the day, but those that still have sets, cherish them!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Auctioneer's Strange Habits
« on: October 11, 2013, 10:20:26 AM »
Not so much "strange" as annoying. The main auctioneer around here like to get the costs of the units up by announcing the more valuable items he sees in them.

Most auctioneers do that, don't they?

Our auctioneers don't do anything crazy like that, just the normal preauction speech. If I were part of that auction, where I was forced to listen to a prayer before beginning, I would probably leave. I'm not saying it's bad, but I don't appreciate having religion pushed upon me. I've been part of several incidences where religion was pushed upon me and I've been told I'm going to hell because I don't contribute financially to a church on more than 1 occasion.

I used to see this a lot, recently not so much. I guess gas prices have gotten in the way of profits for these people.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What vehicle do you drive to auctions?

I drive a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. This way I've got decent gas mileage, and cover from stormy days for the stuff I can bring home with me.

Without knowing provenance, I would put a price of $80-$100 to start. Being that it's hammered, I would expect that it's more of a dairy bucket, or something that was more for household use. If it were a fireman's bucket, that's big money.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Simple Ways To Sell On Your Own Website
« on: October 05, 2013, 10:27:47 AM »
I actually use OpenCart for 2 of my sites, custombandmerchshop.com and customdiecutmagnets.com. It's a bit more advanced than the drag and drop sites. But, I started with no experience in building these types of sites. As long as you get familiar with an FTP program like FileZilla, customizing your site is a breeze. There are so many templates out there as well, that it's easy to look different than the next guy. OpenCart is free, but you have to pay for hosting. I have HostGator for $10 a month and I can host as many sites as I want.

However, shopping cart programs are really meant for stores with static products. For junk dealers like us on this forum, it will be clunky and cumbersome because of the uniqueness of each product.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Reusing Junk

My dad takes dropside cribs which are illegal to sell now and turns them into Christmas tree fences. He sells them on the flea market in Florida from mid Oct - mid Dec and makes himself a pretty penny.

Craigslist / Re: HTML Edited Ads

I tried HTML edited ads for 2 weeks, got zero hits. Changed back to standard ads, made like 15 sales this week. The market has spoken!

I have not, but in the summer time I take couches and chairs that are dirty to the drive in power wash car washes and give them a good power washing. Let them sun dry and they're nearly good as new! Can't do it in the colder months though..

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What's your local auction scene like?
« on: October 04, 2013, 03:56:03 PM »
In Raleigh/Durham there are 40-50 auctions a month. Attendance ranges from 10 people on the light side to 70 people for auctions advertised on AuctionZip. In Florida (before the shows) I lived north of Tampa about an hour. 15-20 auctions a month in my traveling radius. Average crowd of 10-15 people. When I lived in NJ (eons ago) I went to auctions with my grandfather who owned a "used goods" (thrift (sorry grandpa)) shop.. He hated calling it a thrift store.. There were 15-20 auctions a month. Many of which were sealed bids.. I can't remember a time where there was more than 8-10 people.

In my area I have to deal with Raleigh regulars and Durham regulars. Very few people cross the city line. The whales do, and me. Durham regulars pay more than Raleigh. Raleigh regulars are more friendly. Durham regulars are older. In either city the regulars make up a very small percentage of the crowd. Most are either new or drop in and out of the game.

Guitar cases still have some value and power cords can be replaced very inexpensively. It's only bad because it wasn't ideal, but there's still money in the bad..
