eBay / Feed back disappeared
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:14:08 PM »
Most of you know I try my best to boycott ebay.  But occasionally I do use it for hard to move items or to buy things I can't find cheaper anywhere else.
So I'm on today to buy a book and notice my feedback is gone.
This account was only set up a year ago and only had three from selling...but they're gone.  Doesn't really matter.  No one leaves me feedback anyway and I never use it but still, what's up with that?

What's it Worth?? / Re: Leather Jackets
« on: June 17, 2014, 11:41:36 AM »
I'd say $25-$50 is the general range.  I got $75 at a buffalo exchange for a like new Kenneth Cole.
Were selling new for $400, $100-ish on ebay.

Funny thing, I had a Wilson's hipster style jacket.  Tried to sell, no bites.  Finally just started westing it.  Wore for two years, never treated, in rain, threw on ground, treated it horribly.

After it was all worn, faded, frayed......then I started getting compliments on my "vintage" coat and people saying if I ever wanted to sell........WTF?   Not vintage, just old....and F'd up.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Where do you park?
« on: June 17, 2014, 11:31:45 AM »
I like the "city units".   Small and generally, I suspect due to the extremely high cost, people only store stuff they want, not to much crap.

These placed have no parking so it's the old get there early and drive around the block a million times.

Generally I park on street anyway.  I never pull into gate.  People lean on car, put soda on trunk or throw garbage in back of truck.

Really, I've found storage auction and estate sale buyers to be some of the lowest forms of life when it comes to respecting others.  Not to say I haven't found good people, just that the majority needs to get some freaking manners.

Ahhhh......went from 'where do I park' to a rant in 4.6 seconds.  Think that's a new record for me.....

Mike Braiotta's Blog / Re: Mike Braiotta From Storage Wars New York

I'll never understand why SWNY didn't do better.  The original SW and that Texas one sucks! never enjoyed them.  SWNY, I thought, was filmed/edited much better and way better cast.  Still not my kind of show, but the NY one I'll at least stop flipping channels and watch if it was on.

Good luck in hour new endeavors, mike, and congrats on the expected little one.

eBay / Re: Ebay hacked -change ur password
« on: June 10, 2014, 10:31:10 AM »
Reminder to change your password on all your financial accounts, maybe even your user name.

This morning I received notification from two banking institutions that  my account is locked due to incorrect password being entered incorrectly.  Maybe a coincidence but those two accounts had same user name as my ebay user name.  Good thing all my passwords are different but I think I'm going to start changing my user names frequently too.....

eBay / Re: How to efficiently sell products under $10
« on: June 01, 2014, 02:17:52 PM »
Ebay really isn't my thing.  Kind of given up on them so don't know all the tricks.

Best way I know of is to find other sellers of the product and watch them.  Watch feedback.  Keep searching that product under "listings ended".

Message me the product.  Now I'm curious!

The Lounge / Re: The FairTax
« on: June 01, 2014, 01:27:25 PM »
I hadn't heard of this.  Going to have to look into it more.
I can already see some bad things to it.
It looks good on paper but I don't know......communism looks good on paper but doesn't play out to well in the real world.

The first thing I noticed is they say 23% sales tax.  But the tax is paid by seller, tax is included in item.
Their math is: $100 item, business hands over 23%.  That's not really a sales tax but a business tax. They are trying to say the item is $77 and you paid $23 in "sales tax".  But 23% tax on $77 is like $17-ish.
It would have to be set up just like sales tax now.  You buy $100, business collects $23 for government.
But then the business pays no tax on earnings, major tax lose.
Set up like they want it and a business just pays 23% of sales.  But the government takes doesn't take into account the cost of item.  I buy "x" for $90, sell for $100, turn over $23 to gov.....net lose of $13.   (This is eBays model, right?)
If they tax just profit, I as an owner, can just draw any profit as pay (not taxed) and business pays no tax.....

Help me out here guys.   How does this plan work?

If you can get 5000 units for a few hundred and you have the storage it's a no brainer.
Let's say you don't sell any.  Donate and take tax write off.  Your even.

Or use you auction site to unload them and make money back.   Sell to independent convenience stores at $0.25/unit and you still make a profit.  Swap meet, flea market, out of your trunk.....

I figure if you have disposable income, with buying this stuff you can still pay bills, eat, even still go out to dinner......than why not.   All you have to lose is your time and even that can be called a learning experience so its not a waste of time.

So now that I've said this.....what's the product.   Because the above might not be true if your thinking of buying something that, yes, it sells....some.....eventually,  but the market has dropped out.   Like 5000 Rubix Cubes or Harry Potter bobble heads......

What's it Worth?? / Re: Sports Cards
« on: May 29, 2014, 12:04:16 PM »
They didn't tell me how they manage to source so many cards each week/month. Trade secret.

When researching some cards a some years back I found a place that bought bulk cards.  They used facial recognition software.  From the guy talking in the forum it was still pretty new.  Not all cards were in system so it only picked up the high priced cards.  If the card was upside down, no good. Various other things like if it picked up a "good card" it didn't spit it out.  You still had to dig for it.  But they made stacks of one foot and it would tell you what number it was so you knew to look in middle, end, start.....

This was in 2007-ish.  So I'm sure technology has improved.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Silver plated.....
« on: May 25, 2014, 02:48:41 PM »
I looked how to acid bath the silver off.   Turns out that with all I have there MIGHT be an ounce-ish.
Guy on youtube did 500 pieces of flatware and got $60 of silver......supplies cost $25.
Not really worth taking days to make $35.

Dremel seems like even more work and a mess.

Looked on ebay.  Not really selling there either.  And Like I said, it's well used.

Guess I'll throw it in a corner until I have some major recycling to do.  They are so much more willing to pay for stuff they don't really want when you have a bunch of stuff they DO want.....

Flea Markets / Re: "Hyper-markets"
« on: May 25, 2014, 02:35:53 PM »
I've seen them sell water/soda and popcorn.  But pretty much a stall sells food OR unprepared food (vegi's, honey, jam, ect...) OR "stuff".    I've never actually seen any written rules that you can't sell a combination of the three.  And all food sellers have to be on the perimeter. Need access to water and all that, plus having open flame a propane tanks in the middle of a crowded market isn't to safe.

I'm guessing, but it think it comes down to health laws and to sell food you need permit.  I think you'd be breaking health code to have food stock next to your thrift goods.  Plus it would be a hassle.  You'd need different sellers permits and multiple contracts.

But more towards your question.....
All the food sold is private, they rent a stall just like anyone else.   Some swap-meets have their own concessions but I'm not sure if they are run by the facility or if someone leases the space long term. But even there outside food vendors come in and sell food.

What's it Worth?? / Silver plated.....
« on: May 25, 2014, 01:47:50 PM »
Anyone have any luck recycling silver plated items lately?

I've got all this silver plate from a death in the family.  Went thru it all and no sought after patterns.  Plus, it was actually used....like every Sunday/family/holiday dinner for 50 years.  It's pretty worn. Had a sale and a set of flatware (50pc) didn't even sell at $15 (who wants to polish it). In fact, it's so NOT wanted it sat out next garage, unattended, over a weekend and no one took it.

I've been all around and no will buy it.  They'll take it, but not buy it.   I'm not trying to recycle for silver content but they're copper based. Nickel. No one will even give me low brass price.
I use to have no problem selling it.  Wouldn't get very much but they would buy it. Now no one wants it.

I was at a thrift shop and noticed they had a nice assortment.  Asked how well it sold.  She said all of it has been there for years and it keeps growing.  Told here I had a bunch I'll probably end up donating as well.  Her reply: "oh please, Don't bring it here."

It was just Friday that I finally got a notice from ebay to change my password.
Really?  Only after it made the headlines?

No trust in ebay.

That would be my fear.  I'd rather just let the government shake me down.
Hiding money is to hard these days.  My father was a fraud accountant.  I remember the storied of the ways he caught people.   One guy was good.  He embezzled a ton but covered his tracks so well they couldn't get a lead in to investigate further.  They knew he did it, just couldn't get proof enough to get court orders.  So one day they are looking at his bank statements and his self car wash business is making deposits of a few hundred a day.  They look into other similar businesses and it all fits. No red flags.  Then my dad notices a deposit slip....then another......another......all the deposits were $20s.
The machine at the wash only changed $1s and $5s.   Where was he getting hundreds of dollars in $20 bills?   That alone was enough to get authorization to dig deeper and in time caught the guy.

One little mistake and your f**ked.   Just be legit.  If I found $100k I'd just look at it as $60k.  Let the IRS have theirs.   Still a good score.......

Now if I found a few thousand.....eh........might come down to how much I made that year vs deductions.
It probably wouldn't even effect my tax rate so might claim it.

There is no way you could give me $10,000!   No way.  Under no circumstance would I take the money.
