Just went to eBay and listed a few items.
I have not done this in probably 4 years and was surprised by what I found --- Is it typical?
Everything I posted was FREE.
I paid NO Fees of any kind.
Is it possible I was lucky and I hit a special going on?

Picker's Paradise / Is Gettting Great Deals at Retail "Picking"

Hey,
I often find Great Deals at Retail Outlets that I resell. Does this count as Picking?

2 days ago - I found "Aquarium Ornaments".
About 10 different underwater Ornaments - Giant Oyster w/ moving Pearl, Fiber Optic Treasure Chest, etc.
Price: $1 each - checked eBay -- $10-49 (same product) Bought 60
Last Night at Auction: 6 styles of hats/caps (total around 70) purchased under $1 ea. Retail in my store at $4.99
5 inches of OLD postcards - Old City Scapes, State Parks, etc. $7. Ebay - $2.50 - $7.00 each
This may be my comfort zone vs. Storage Units.
But not giving up yet.

« on: August 08, 2013, 03:59:54 PM »I'll go to a 1 unit auction if it's close to home. If I have to drive more than 10 miles, forget it. I used to go to them all, my thinking was the lower the number of units available, the less the crowd will be. Not the case.. So now the less number of units, the closer it has to be to my home or business.wish I had that option!
Out here in the country, I almost have to drive 10 miles to visit the bathroom!
30 miles is the closest facility that I have found that offers storage auctions.

Granted, we all want to sell the unique items, or something that we're highly knowledgeable on, but the thing I focus on now is, how much money can I make off this stuff? I put a number on each unit. If I think I can make $400, my top number is $200.Absolutely agree about - I don't have to like it to sell it. We have a busy little Country Store - If it were stocked with just stuff I liked - we would be closed long ago!
I no longer look at the items and fall in love. It's all just a bunch of stuff with dollar signs.
I guess my comment would have made more sense, if I said, I didn't see anything I would be comfortable knowing would sell for more than a total of $200-$300 w/ a LOT of work to get there.
Not going to give it up - gonna see a few more.

General Storage Auction Talk / First Trip Out Today

My son and I made our first trip out today. An area storage that had 4 units for sale.
I went with the intent of buying one if it interested me and could buy it.
1st one - 20 x 30 - Mgr said had been there since 2002. Looked more like 1982 and not touched since. Avocado Green Fridge and Stove. Busted up furniture, wood panneling, NOTHING interesting to me.
Told my boy we weren't interested even at $20.
Auctioneer tried to open bid at $600.
$500, $400 .... Some guy yelled "2"
Well, I thought the auctioneer was kidding when he said "OK, $200.00!"
I REALLY thought the guy meant $2.00.
Nope went for $360
#2 - a little tiny one, w/ OLD microwave, Small cheap kitchen table, etc. - $360
#3 - HUGE locker - but not much in it - Mgr said it was a "Repair Man's Locker" very few tools, just the broken down, unfinished projects from the 'repair man' and an older water heater. $450
#4 12x16 - they opened the doors - can't even remember what was in it - when they got a $200 bid, we and most everybody headed for their cars. Heard it end at $360.
All in all, not impressed. Will try again.

Yup --- I run a Country Store/Convenience Store, 11 yr old boy on 4 baseball teams (3 Travel Teams), 2 basketball teams, Farm w/ cattle, alpacas, and Mini-Donkeys, Wife works 100+ hours as RN (at 3 jobs) - so I do all House and Kid work.
We are busy - but I wanted something to do in my spare time!
On my way today to a 4 unit sale. At store at 4:30a, home in a bit to Pressure wash the Cattle trailer in case I need it and off the son and I will go. We both enjoy Auctions and Selling - he brought in over $800 this weekend at a yard sale in front of our store. Great bonding time and memories.
(NOW, if I can just keep my wife from finding out I am buying a locker full of junk!)

Their Lampasas Warehouse is located in a very small town and they have virtually no competition. They travel around Texas buying storage units and they bring everything back to the warehouse. They have a huge sale once a month and blow everything out. Since they're only open a few days per month, the people in Lampasas consider their sales somewhat of an event and they draw in big crowds.Do you know - do they do a Monthly Auction or have a big Blow out sale each month???

You are right - many of these are probably smaller facilities in Small Communities.
I believe most of the folks I spoke to were the actual owners - a few of the calls went to Their home or Personal Cell phones.
I will be at my first tomorrow Morning.

I don't really know - but in last few hours, I have called 26 facilities.
2 are having Auctions this week
3 are putting me on their List
2 signed ME up as their "GUY" that buys their units
TOTAL: 7
The rest: "We don't do that." or "We have a GUY."
Anyone else see this in their area?
I intend to call every few months to see

Storage Facilities / "In House Buyer"

Hello,
I have been calling several different area Storage Facilities in my county and several surrounding counties.
Been finding that most all of them "Already have someone that does this."
Meaning when I ask a few questions, they have someone that buys EVERY locker at around $100 and is the only person they deal with. I asked if they would be interested in another person, I was told no each time.
Anyone else run into this?

I have been to both auctions several times - I am pretty sure that storage units are where most of the consigners are getting their 'stuff'.
Mostly low end furniture, knick knacks, low end glassware, purses, etc. Doesn't sell for bunch - but it sells every week!
I actually pick up quite a few bargains to resell or keep.
Nearby is a higher level - haven't been in 4 or 5 years - but son (11) and I have been trying to get to for a few weeks. Thier vacation and our baseball, baseball, baseball, basketball seems to get in the way of theirs

In our LITTLE community we have 2 very low end weekly sales.
One a little better than the other.
Just thought it would be a way to pick thru the good - dump the other quickly do not have time or locations to do the flea mkt
Think they take 25% commission -=
Been buying pieces at both for our Country Store.
Just now looking at Storage.
Been Auction buying for years.
Bought farm and business/Store at auction.
