Here's a thread of a similar nature regarding former lkr owners making an appearance.

Most of the sports stuff looks like it might have been a family member at a college.

Yep, you read right; $18,500.

Here's the background. This household was stored  in VAULTS at a major moving company. There were 17 vaults.
Some 6 to 8 months ago this unit was also shown to us. They took all the items out of the vaults and had them displayed over a large area. At the last minute, before bidding could begin, the household owner paid up...he paid the $15,000 he owed in back storage fees. Story over ? Nope, now it's today, July 22, 2011.

The items were still displayed EXACTLY as they were months ago (see 8 pictures below). I asked the auctioneer what the plan was. He would open the bidding at a certain amount (unknown to us at that moment). If he didn't get an offer he would sell the stuff piece meal.

First, the crowd. About  40 people and 6 to 10 of us who EACH could have paid $10,000 for these goods, but this didn't stop us from talking to each other about getting together to make our individual pieces in the $2500 to $3000 range by grouping together. During the next 30 minutes the auctioneer was approached by three different groups with their bids.

After selling 3 unrelated vaults (different owners) we got to the biggie. The auctioneer started it at $5,000 (none of the side bids were that high) and he got NO bids. OK, he said..."we'll sell it piecemeal." At that point someone bid $5K and it went from there pretty much $500 to$1k at at time until it sold for $18,500 to......drum roll.....the former property owner ! Again !  Now he was the  original buyer at $x,xxx, then bailed it out 6 months ago at $15K and now at $18.5K !
So he is IN this stuff somewhere around $60K or so.

The auctioneer takes him in the office to verify he actually HAD the money. Came back out..."auction over."

Stuff was really nice, high quality, high-end from a home in exclusive Blackhawk which is near San Francisco. This guy had some dough all right, just not a good manager of that money !

I'll put more pictures in the next post. Images no longer available.

Forgot to take a pic of the HUGE stainless outdoor grill, 3 stainless coolers, Coke machine, etc.

Continue to give it some thought, but my guess is that given your circumstances, this biz might not be for you.

Check out this thread for someone else who had an idea and appears to have given it a 2nd thought.

One month later....July 22, 2011.

Looks like this plan was given some REALISTIC thought and the plan was abandoned. Better that than going through with it and falling flat after expending a lot of effort and time for little if any return.

My next question is regarding travel.  In my area, auctions seem to be few and far in between, maybe one a month if that.  If I travel 3 hours-ish, there are an abundance of auctions at any given time.  In the veterans experience, is it worth the travel on a normal basis?  Obviously one good score would make it well worth while, but on an average with gas in a truck and hauling a trailer?

All of the following is MY OPINION..take it for what it's worth.

You say you go to an auction close to home about once a month. If you see 10 lkrs there, are there ANY you would have bought considering their cost and what they contained?  If the answer is NONE or 1 out of 10 (or 20) extend that thought to an auction 150 miles (2-3 hours one way) and IMAGINE if you would get a lkr there.

My personal belief is that the ODDS of finding a worthwhile lkr that far from home are SLIM...not NONE, but SLIM.

Then, IF you found a good one (and you won it)  what if you couldn't get it ALL in your truck/trailer?  A second trip would be necessary or you would have to otherwise off-load the stuff at the lkr city.

Nope, IN MY OPINION, too much hassle for the value. I personally would not do it. Heck, I hardly go 30 miles one way and the stories I hear from my cronies who make the 180 mile ROUND-TRIPS on a regular basis are almost always questioning the value of doing so.

i get tired of people saying this is worth this, this is worth that. Its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I get your point and I am all for "saying what I mean", but I think when people are saying that they are really saying something like:

"I think I can get (this amount) for my (item)."

or

"I saw one just like mine bring $xx on eBay."

or

"My friend sold one almost like this for $xx at the flea market."

It wouldn't be "reality tv" without the two shows inflating the prices like crazy...can only hope all the new folks
don't take it too much to heart.
