eBay / Re: Finally an eBay promo I can use....
« on: August 14, 2013, 03:55:41 PM »
Where is a good "Elsewhere"?

Craigslist and etsy for me.  EBid is getting popular but I haven't used yet.
OfferUp is cool.  People pay with paypal, people are registered.  Kind of a safer version of Craigslist.
Plus you know they will show since they've already paid.   Do need to be in a highly populated are tho...

Someone here turned me on to Listia also.
It's not great since you 'give away' items for points. Turn around and buy stuff with those points.
I don't list anything I could make money on but for those items that its to little money to meet someone for (CL) or ebay/paypal fee's will eat profit its 'okay'.   You know, those $1-$2 garge sale items or things destined for GoodWill.

I put up a Kenneth Cole compact case/lip stick holder that sells on ebay for $0.99 and between that and points you earn or signing up/listing/checking in/ect.  I got a $60 bottle of the cologne I wear.

Yeah, that's this months special for people that don't list much.
No FV fee for all your free insertion listings.

List all those smalls that fees eat up profit!

The Lounge / Problems posting?
« on: August 13, 2013, 02:30:19 PM »
Is anyone having problems posting?   Good 50%-75% of the time I just hang, never posts.  Have to copy, back out, re-reply and paste.

I'm 99.9% sure its on my end, my cable has been acting funny too.   But I don't seem to have this problem elsewhere.   Slow, but doesn't just hang forever........

This was the only one I saw that it seemed like your average people shooting the sh*t about auctions.

The others it seemed either it was people with an agenda for being on the forum OR it was a billion newbies asking the same stuff over and over......
There wasn't any real world discussions.

Plus the format.  This style of board is pretty easy to navigate.  Simple. Nice break down of threads.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Anybody good with Chinese pottery?
« on: August 09, 2013, 01:33:58 PM »
Lot of chips, that's not good.

Any markings on back?  "House of Wongs - Free Delivery" is a bad sign......

Is it translucent? Hold up to light, does any light show thru?

Ultimate test: Throw it against a wall.  If it breaks its not worth anything.....well, now its not worth anything.   ;D

eBay / Re: Buying & Selling Coupons on eBay
« on: August 08, 2013, 01:12:48 PM »

Sell? No.  It's a pain just to collect them all, then list, mail.....all for a buck or two?

Buy?  Yes.   A penny saved.....

If you coordinate sales with coupons so item is free its worth it.
I got 20 Nivea body washes at Target for free.   Sold 15 for $30 and have body wash to last me a year.
Made a few bucks at Xmas flipping electric razors I got with sale/coupons combo.  Not free but like 1/2 off.

I tend to stick with toiletries.  They are easily resold to swap meet guys and on ebay/craigslist.
I don't need and can't sell 30 bottles of BBQ sauce.
Basically anything that keeps and I use anyway.   If I can't sell at least I'm not spending money.

You just have to make sure the coupons  are for your area OR a manufacturer coupon.
Also have to make sure they will arrive in time.

A lot of time manufactures work deals with west coast retailers to put item on buy-one-get-one, while on east coast they put out coupon for $5/1 or something.
$10 item.  Now two for $10. With Coupon = $5 for two.  $10 item now $2.50.

Do it once or twice you save some money.  Do it 10-20 times you can sell and make a few bucks.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Vintage Bottles
« on: August 07, 2013, 08:29:12 PM »
I've run into the same thing.  No advice here, sorry.

I was just at an estate sale and these two guys were going crazy over the bottles.
He had one and was saying how rare it was.  Next to it was one he said belonged in the recycling.
They looked identical to me!

Same with Lab Glass.  I can't tell new from old.  One estate had stuff marked between $20 and $A-sh*t-load.
It was being grabbed up like crazy.

The stuff at he university's surplus store looks identical, sells for $2-&5, and sits there....?

Usually I don't know how many units there are untill I arrive.
I've only been going to ones close to home.  Auctioneer has an email listing of where he'll be and posts the night before if 'confirmed'.   For the most part if there is only one he'll hold it until he next month.

That said, if he finds out the next auction in the train only has one i usually head home.  It's just to much.
Time, people, low odds...
Tho, there has been times he announce the next facility only has one, only a few people....then its an asking game.  "You going? How out you?"

Last month there was one that he was asking people to go.  (He needs at least three bidders.)
I went just to help him out.  Turned out to e a fantastic unit and only went for $260 and had two $900 JBL stage monitors in it.   Unfortunatly it was huge unit and I was going out of town so had no time to empty and it and he couldn't locate manager to see if I could rent it for a month.

If I call around and a place has only one I tend not to go.  The possibility of it being paid up, everyone fighting for one unit.....not worth it.

So short answer:  No, but sometimes.  I have my reasons but not really.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Bombay Company Marching Band Trinkets
« on: August 06, 2013, 07:10:03 PM »
I'm going with that they may be place card holders.  You know, put your guests name by plate....
Can't really tell from the lone picture.  When standing up how tall are they?   What's the thing off the side?
............................l

Can't find those but a general search comes up with Bombay place holders at $35/4set
Reselling at $10-$15 range.

Good news, Bombay is a well known high end store.
Bad news, if they are place holders.....if you can't find more, who needs just four?

I think I'd try selling those on etsy.  Seems more those people's style.

Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: The weirdest place you found money?
« on: August 04, 2013, 11:30:17 PM »
I can beat that....

Back in my flipping cars and bar tending days, when I had a  lot of cash from tips, I had a paper bag I stuck my money in.  I had it in this little hidden drawer in the closet and asked my (now) ex to deposit it.

Over time we bought some furniture, we went on a few vacations but I always felt we should have more money in the bank.  I totally got on her about her spending.....

Fast forward, im not tending bar anymore. I lose his crappy job I'm workin. Totally cash broke. Busted out my "business account".  Living off of investments, 401k.....
I go to dig thru drawer to see if there is any jewelry worth selling and to get some CD's to cash in and pull out this bag jammed in the back.  $18,000!!  Her forgetfulness and my utter lack of accounting saved our a** big time!!

.....Of course the first thing my ex says is "Oh! Lets go to Hawaii!"     :-[

Craigslist / Re: High End Applinaces
« on: August 04, 2013, 04:00:33 PM »
I hate it when that happens.  :-[

Actually it worked out well.
Went to an estate sale and they had the torch I need for $3.50, retail $40.
And the dowel I need....well, close....it will work.  But free rather than a couple bucks.

Three times in the past few weeks I've bought something then see it at he next set of estate sales I go to.  So finding it *before* I buy it retail kinda made my day!

Halloween is the big holiday for me. Last year I scored a unit with a lot of great costumes. I added some stuff that could be used to make a costume and people were coming in from miles away. Who knew.

I know this lady that her mother and aunt sells Halloween stuff.  All they do.
They seek out and rent 5,000-20,000 sq/ft store space for 90 days.  Month to set up, six weeks selling, tear down.   Last year they had ten locations.  Make around $50,000 off EACH!

Then they take 4-5 months off and start again.  Looking for locations, buying inventory, hiring help,.......

Never knew there was that much money to be made off holidays by us low level guys!  Thought the corporations had it all locked down for themselves......

Craigslist / Re: High End Applinaces

Asked the Home Depot guy how many double wall mounted ovens he sold and his best guess was 1:250.
So one for every 250 stand alone/range top models.  He's been there 10-ish years and ha sold 2-3  personally that he can remember.

Also said it was usually to Contractors. Not DIY home improvement people.  They are just to hard for your average person to install.  Or rather SEEM to be to hard.

He did add a disclaimer....

That store is primarily DIY stuff.  Not contractors.  It's in an area with older homes so probably not to many wall mounted ovens.  And since they are big and expensive, items like that are usually bought online or by phone.  Most stores don't even have a display model on the floor.

Also said double ovens "are out".   People don't want them.  If one goes out you need to replace whole thing at a huge price difference and people find they use two ovens at once like...never. Maybe on holidays. Plus contractor are trying to utilize every inch of space and they take to much room, so now if they go for wall mount its the convection oven under a microwave.....that way you have more counter space.

I talked to this guy for a good 20 minutes bout ovens.  I know more about ovens now that i care too. Then went and looked tools, forgot why I ws there and came home with out buying the doweling I went for in the first place.....
