Craigslist / Re: Phone Verification?
« on: August 23, 2011, 12:55:13 PM »
Jross are you sure you want posting under m4m? I ki I kid. yeah craigslist never use to make me do the phone verification now it seems like everytime I go to put up a listing they make me verify again

j ross I think the other people are right just clear your cookies. have you used any other phone number for craigslist in the past? I think they may only allow 1 account per number and then you have to wait 6 months to use another number not positive about that but I may have read something about that before

the only other thing I can think of is maybe it's an issue with a house phone. I know they have the voice verify option personally I normally have them send me a text message with a code maybe try a cellphone instead of the house phone and see if that works

Dont have my own cell phone no more, and did not want to use the wifes phone.

I had a issue like this once with Craigslist. All I had to do was clear my cookies and browser history, reset my pop-up blocker setting and re-boot the computer and I stopped getting those error verification notices.

Thanks I will try this.

I use a Google Voice number for Craigslist, but I ran into this problem too.  After some research, I found out that CL won't accept VOIP phone numbers.  They want a physical phone number, and I wound up using my actual cell number and it worked fine.

I don't know what type of phone number you are using, but if it is a VOIP number (like Google Voice), CL won't accept it.

Its my home phone, and I am guessing its VOIP. I have my phone with Time Warner Cable and the phone line hooks into my modem.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Been holding onto them for awhile now

Any chance they were wrong and you get a second opinion?

Its the only local place I have found that would give me some kind of information. Everywhere else I tried either dont respond back or tell me they dont know anything about the piece. So even though I hate it, I am having to accept his opinion.

Well I got it looked at. Sad Sad Sad news. Its a decorative piece, no more than 20 years old. Worth about 10 bucks a piece. However I have Asian Festival coming up here in a few months. If I havent sold them by then, I will be trying to unload them at the festival for 20 dollars a piece.

Oh BTW, according to the guy who looked at it, its Chinese not Japanese.

jross i think you may be trying to post in casual encounters lol for sale generally doesn't care if you have an account or make you verify.

just kidding i know some sections do like gigs and a i think certain subcategories of the for sale section. for verification it normally just has you put in a phone number and then texts you a new verification code no?

THe sub I am having trouble with right now is general merchandise in sales. And yes that is what it is suppose to do. But when I put my number in it tells me it cant verify my number. And I checked it 3 times and tried 3 times, its the right number, my home number.

Jross - thanks for the welcome. New Bedford is pretty far afield for me, so I haven't been to an auction that far south of Boston. But, I'm able to find lots of auctions within a 30 minute drive from where I live, many of them in reasonably affluent areas.

There are two auction companies that handle virtually all the auctions in New England. The first is Storage Auction Solutions (the auctioneer owner is the auctioneer in the 2 Auction Hunter episodes that were in the Boston area). Their calendar is at: storageauctionsolutions.com/Calendar/index.htm. I didn't see too many auctions in your neck of the woods, but I'm not sure how far you're willing to drive. Storage Auctions USA, I see, has 6 auctions tomorrow that are in or near New Bedford. Their calendar is at: storageauctionsusa.com/auction_schedule.cfm.

I think if you check out the calendars side by side to a map, you'll get a good idea of how far you'd need to drive to take in auctions regularly.

Monkey Business - thanks for the welcome!

well like I said it is something I am thinking about doing. And depending on how the bids are going I may be willing to drive all teh way to Boston like once a month. But was hoping I would be able to stay closer to where I want to move to. My family came to New Bedford and a few of the other close by towns during hte early part of the 1900s from Portugal. So I have always wanted to check it out. Still got some family there in Mattapoiset, New Bedford, Martha's Vineyard, and Acushnet.

The numbers i can read
Is # 85 #37 #12 #6

wow, those are super light. Did you take pics with a flash on? If so try with out a flash.

I will do my best to look into this one, going to be a little hard? I am guessing you dont have a COA for it. With that being the case the most you can hope for is like a hundred bucks. But even that will be hard to come by, most people will try to get it from you for 50 dollars or less. Once I get some more information on the year of the ball, I advise, if you wish that is, which would depend on what the outcome value would be, is to take it to someone that can give you a COA for it. Im sure there is some in LA. The only ones I know of are two different outfits in NYC, and they IMO are not very cheap.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Quickest way to sell new books.
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:30:41 PM »
With out selling them really cheap, like 50 cents a book, and in alot of cases for like a penny on Amazon. Its rather hard. Sorry to inform you of that.

When (if) you put bulk lots of flea market/garage sale type items on Craigslist be prepared for dozens of requests for you to donate the items to whatever (alleged) charity might be responding. I tried that once and it was more hassle than it was worth. Never got a response from anyone interested in buying the stuff.
I did, however, find a buyer for my small items when a family came and looked at some other things I had for sale. I have sold them about 5 loads so far. I try to figure what I would sell the stuff for at a yard sale and then ask about 1/5 of that for the load.
I figure as long as I sell it to them low enough that they make money, they will keep buying it.
Hope some of that helps.

I have had no luck getting rid of items in bulk. which is truly sad.

Craigslist / Phone Verification?
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:28:18 PM »
Has anyone else came across this problem? I am now getting this on several of my items, I am unable to repost. Not even creating a new ad with the information I cant do. I seem to get a can not verify your number when I try to get my number veriifed. It is really starting to piss me off.

Does anyone know a better free alternative to CL?

Hi and welcome. As far as tips, read through this whole site. Also might want to look at a couple of other sites that members here have. All of it is loaded with tons of information. There really is to much to offer in advice with out being specific.

Now as far as would you stand a better chance in city a or city b. Well. This depends on a number of factors. How many people are going there, what the bids look like right now in those areas. Those are the main factors. Another factor is which place has more units that go up for auction. Usually the more facilities an area has the more auctions it will have. However this is not always 100% of the time the case. But its a good way to look at things.

Every auction has its junk and its good valuables, location really does not place a part of it. I travel all over my city doing auctions. And to tell you the truth, I have come up with better items in my lockers from facilities that are in a more poor part of town. Just a lil FYI.

The TV shows only show the fun & easy parts of the business, bidding and winning, and finding the treasures. Unfortunately this accounts for only about 10%-20% of your time spent operating this business.

Good Luck

Exactly. And I honestly think it is less than 10 - 20%. but I enjoy every aspect of this business. Except going through the trash, which is a good amount of the lockers. Hard work any way you look at it.
SKILLS NEEDED:

1. Research (even just a general know how to research is beneficial, you will do alot of this, for facilities, the worth of something, how to sell or get in contact with people that know more about your item.

2. Being able to to examine a locker from a distance and get pretty close to what you think it is worth (on what you see).

3. Able to bid in a professional manner, this of course though ranges from several different ways, running your competition up, not to get caught up in a pissing contest, bidding with out attracting attention to your self, and bidding to intimidate others or catch others off guard.

4. Sizing up people and reading them. From the Auctioneer, your fellow bidders, and any future customers, whether it is the end consumer or another dealer.

5.  Being a salesman, or at the very least sociable with people, a since of charm or silver tongue like qualities.

6. Hard work ethic, cause you will be spending alot of time in this business catering your business. From bidding, goign through the locker, loading EVERYTHING ALL UP, dumping the trash, dropping off any donations, cataloging all your sellable merchandise, researching products, selling products, which may include a various ways on selling.

7.  Not be the type to get emotionally caught up in the hype, meaning make a plan, stick with that plan. Pride can be very damaging for you during the bidding.

8. Book keeping, or at very least organization skills. Both are tremendous help.

There area few other things, but these are some of the most important, that most people do not even think of.
