eBay / Re: China set
« on: October 11, 2013, 07:50:19 PM »
I've never had much luck buying/selling China. I've gotten China in a few units. I don't recall the name something japanese like nyatachi or something like that. Anyhow, if you look on those "china replacements" sites it's like $36 or more for a single piece of china. its a site so people can buy pieces they've lost or broken from a set. I tried on ebay and classified sites and never had any luck. Wound up selling like 2 sets at a garage sale for like $10 each and was happy with that. Plus selling online account for some breakage unless you spend a fortune sending a giant box all individually wrapped and in a pool of packing peanuts. i tried flea markets as well with the china and a bunch of crystal and they weren't interested. it was actually the pawn shop on that tlc show pawnqueens

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Drugs and credit cards??
« on: October 08, 2013, 10:37:53 AM »
Why would you start a collection of other people's credit cards? Also, most are probably inactive anyway, plus if they can't pay storage unit fees probably don't have much of a credit limit anyways. I think its a bad idea. If you ever got pulled over and had strangers credit cards in your possession your looking at trouble and dont say i found them in a storage unit because why did you hang on to htem unless you were planniing on doing something with them?

as for drugs. ive never found more than like an 1/8th of some crappy dried out weed but i used to know guys who kept those big plastic tote bins and fridgerator boxes full of good weed in storage units. if anyone ever went to jail and dindt tell their gf or someone about it there would probably be a very hapy buyer

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Steam Cleaning Tools
« on: October 05, 2013, 09:44:07 AM »
I'm going to keep my eye on this thread. I love steam cleaners, the problem however is unless your willing to spend big money on one they are generally crap. I think of them like paint sprayers, awesome investment, time saving, does a better job than rollers or brushes but if you go buy the $100 one its gonna clog all day. You get a more expensive one they are great.

Same with steam cleaners, most ofthe cheap ones dont get hot enough, dont work well, or only hold enough steam to clean for like a few minutes and then need to recharge.

What's it Worth?? / Reusing Junk
« on: October 05, 2013, 09:37:22 AM »
Hey guys, I know some of you on here are somewhat handy and crafty. I just recently have been getting into finding ways to reuse stuff that would otherwise be junk. Occasionally I'll find wierd stuff like closet doors and stuff which are a hit or misson craigslist, I wind up using them as firewood, throwing them out, etc.

On pinterest there's tons of good ideas to reuse things like old doors, old shutters, etc. I recently got a new puppy and already have  a 100 pound bulldog. Dog gates are expensive like $150 for one that covers a big gap. I had some doors I found in a storage unit, painted them and used them as a gate. Another cooll idea with old shutters is paint each one a different color, attach them with hinges and make a kind of foldable gate. Really cool and works well.

Just some ideas for those of you who like taking on projects and reusing stuf which may otherwise be junk

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Website / Kiosks that buy cell phones

I've used these places to get phones "rooted" "jailbroken" or "unlocked" but thats about it. They will normally do that for about $40 which is pretty decent

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Store Owners....How are you doing ?
« on: October 05, 2013, 08:53:44 AM »
I opened the doors officially on Monday. Between then and today I've made about $300, $200 of that came from a bedroom set. $250/wk is what I need to break even. It's a great starting point, especially considering I have 1.5 months free and 2 months of half rent after that.

It's helping that kids are going back to school now and I'm so close to 3 major universities!

I think the ones that struggle depend solely on sales from the traffic that comes to the store organically. I post heavily on craigslist, anything that I get from a unit that I would throw out, I put up for free to get people to come to the store. Everybody who walks in is a potential sales person for your store. So, even if they just take the free away, I could end up with some word of mouth.

My website has been up for a couple of weeks and is gaining ground on google, I've gotten maybe 4-5 calls this week from my website.

As long as I continue to push craigslist, amazon and ebay, I'll be able to make rent and a bit of money no sweat.

just wanted to say props to you, it takes balls to go out and invest in yourself and try to do something like a store. awesome idea with the free stuff as well. hope you continue to succeed

Sorry accidentally hit post beore I was finished. Anyhow, I started off using a blogger blogspot website for my selling. It's really simple, point and click, it's free as long as you dont mind having a .blogspot as oppsed to a .com plus it's only $10 a year to make it a .com. You can easily create paypal buttons, write up a blog post about an item your selling, put a paypal button in the post and sit back and wait for someone to buy. is

This actually worked out surprisingly well for me for quite some time. Then I had a colleage mention to me I would do a lot more business if I had a more professional site which inspired more customer confidence since the area of business I'm dealing in requires a more professional presentation than if your just selling a cocuh for example.

I then got a godaddy template website. Under $300 a year, alot of customization you can do, pretty easy to link up to paypal and or a merchant processor, they also give you free name is slipping my mind but security token to accept credit cards. This was better than a blogger site, a little better for seo as well, comes with free credits for adsense, yahoo ads, bing ads, facebook ads, etc. This worked out well for a while too but then wanted again a more professional presentation and more functional and user friendly site.

I found out that most US web designers dont do the work themselves, they outsource it to india jack up the price about 4x and charge you and act as the middlemen. I got a recommendation for a great web designer, do sites for companies like car companies  and purell. Got a site that would have cost me 15k-30k done for under 4k. Also doing some seo work with them normally $1500 a month in the us, I'm getting it for $450.

There's alot of other options as well, I've played around with wix.com which I was actually kind of impressed with, you can get a really professional presentation of your site and it's all point and click. Not at all template looking like many other site design programs and sites.

Anyhow, just wanted to share some stuff I've tried and what worked and what didnt

Hey guys, the last year or two has really been a learning experience for me in terms of learning ecommerce and continually learning more and upping my game in terms of geting more functional websites and more professional looking websites.

I know alot of you guys don't like paying ebay fees or want your own brand or want more control over your business so maybe setting up your own website is a good option. I think one thing people forget to remember is that it's tough to drive traffic to a website. You can have a great looking site with great products and it can be a well functioning easy to navigate site but if nobody visits it its all for naught.

That said I just wanted to sahre a few tips I have picked up and some things I have tried.
