Today, Wed, April 6, 2011....

Went to two of three Public Storage auctions.

Crowd at first one was about 18. Bids were pretty reasonable...for junk.

Crowd at 2nd auction about 12. Two lockers, first one went for $100 or so for a 5 x 10.
Second lkr was a 10 by 10...I went to $750 and it went for $850 I think it was. A good solid looking locker.
If I had continued it would only have been driving the other guy up, and he stayed out of it until I dropped out of the running and then a couple of more bids against the newbie and he got it; since he is one of the regulars in my area and we sell at the same flea market, he deserved to get it without having to pay more than he did...and the favor will be returned some day.

A year ago (at the sealed bid auction) one of the guys had a locker broken into the first night after the auction.
It was the only one broken into and had some good "antique" items in it.

A small piano was stolen among other things. What makes this interesting is that the managers (now gone from there) had an online church and were looking to start a brick and mortar church...they had even mentioned this to the locker buyer about six months before this auction and break in took place.

Considering there are no security cameras there and the former mgrs interest in a piano...well, it's all circumstantial, but I'm thinking ...."amen, brother."

Sealed bid auction today and a good crowd...18 of us and 14 were regulars so we were bidding against people we knew.

This auction was only in the paper; not on any list. Funny small crowd because not a one of the 4 main auctioneers had anything going on anywhere today so I expected more bidders.

I went between $400 and $500 on two lkrs and got beat both times by $25 to $35. Went by one of them later and it was coming out pretty good.

I got one for $150 and I already know it's nothing special....no Auction Hunter biggies in there !

One couple  bought 5 lkrs, one of the old-timers bought 2; actually, I think 6 of us bought all 15 lkrs.

Miami....

First 10 minutes looks promising for Allen and Ton....what a surprise...NASA collectibles and some kind of vehicle they got in a container for about $2K.

Will edit during next commercial break.

Wow...more commercials than content: The guys got a hovercraft and in last 10 minutes will try it out. Looks like the NASA collectibles might not be a winner.

The guys are slipping; they only made a little over $7600 profit !  ???

*****

Next half hour...they find a quad and a derringer. Gee, just like the ones I got just yesterday (in my dreams).

Yep....they did well again making around $3500 profit I think. Storage Wars is looking better all the time !

Yep, that was a good one!  Been a couple of years since I had a $1,200 day.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Stolen Property
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:15:24 PM »
I know the cops in my town monitor craigslist for stolen stuff.  I dont think its all that likely, but if I do end up with a bunch of stolen goods I would hate for the cops to come after me.

"Bought this stuff at a storage auction, huh?  Heard that one before, come with us."

Well, you could take a cover shot from the outside of the lkr after you won it, and then when inside and you find super-deluxe items you could photograph those in their surroundings. This might help. Then if they were stolen you could show those photos, cops could talk to property manager, name could be tracked...might have had previous police exposure for burglary, etc.

A long shot it will ever happen, but wouldn't take much to take some pics.
I have a story about a stolen Harley which I related elsewhere in these threads. I'll try to find it and post the link to it.

Edit: Here's the link to stolen Harley, police action involved and what they did. See reply #8 in the thread below.

Craigslist / Re: Craiglist tip
« on: April 04, 2011, 01:24:53 PM »
I know that is the case (browsing vs. searching), but I have never understood this.
What are the chances that if I want a gizmo that it will be listed high in the list if I just call up today's listings? I would say next to none.

On the other hand, if I do a search it may pull up 6 gizmos that were listed from 5 days to 2 weeks ago. AND, that of course WOULD be a possible sign I could bargain with the seller as rfr indicated. That could certainly work for me as a buyer, and even possibly as a seller. If I have built in some bargaining margin, it's no problem for me to come down a bit.

I will usually let items go a week and then delete and relist them along with some new items.

Monday....back to work moving stuff from newly bought lkrs to permanent lkr.

Tomorrow, April 5, 2011 attending the one auction in my area that is sealed bids. An opportunity to
get a lkr at a reasonable price but with the danger of losing it by a few dollars...a bummer. I once bid $400 right
off the bat and got the lkr, but only made $135 profit and the next highest sealed bid was $265 I think; if only we could
truly read the competitor's mind, but it is fun to try to figure out what the others will bid.

The promo mentioned a number of cities (or states)....looks like they are going to same areas as Storage Wars.

The movie memorabilia would be a perfect example of what (I'm sure) ALL the Miami lkrs are containing. That and drug money, guns and numerous Little Rascal scooters, boxes of unused Ben Gay, and other elder products; might be a Menorah in there too.

Even the ghosts are lonely.

Makes this forum look like a bustling metropolis !

Love them or hate them, watch them or not.....they're back !

New season for the dynamic duo starts Tuesday, April 5, 2011 on Spike.

I wonder if an Atari 2600 is still selling for $250 ! ?

Well, somebody needs to start some threads around here.  For as many members as we have, we should have many more new postings to read every day.  Someone out there must have something to say?! ???

Well, starting the threads doesn't seem to be the problem .... again IMHO.... but as you said, getting people to chime in with their thoughts on the many subjects already started. With almost 2,000 members and a fairly small number starting threads and similar small numbers responding, it's definitely a small circle.

Maybe that's the way it is in a lot of subject areas though.

Flea Markets / Re: Miscellaneous Flea Market Stories
« on: April 03, 2011, 05:50:17 PM »
yeah people at flea markets can be a pain. you can get those money markers very cheaply if your concerned about counterfit. i take big bills for small items but normally charge them a couple bucks extra for the exchange if they dont have anything smaller if they still wanna do it cool.

Ill take change as well although i always have bins of tshirts a quarter a piece.

I've been using the anti-counterfeit pen for some time and now with the shiny vertical threads, watermarks, etc it's getting easier to spot bad notes.

A year ago a nearby seller came over to me and asked if I could change a hundred for him. This guy had been around several years and was likeable enough. "Sure" I said and took the bill from him. I checked it by holding it up to the light first and there was no water mark where it should have been for that age of the bill. I also marked it and the yellow stripes turned black. When I mentioned it to him he said "Oh, I gave you one of those ?" Here, try this one. I just handed the 2nd bill back to him and told him I was mistaken, I didn't have enough change. It wasn't too many months after that we stopped seeing him around. Don't know what happened to him, but trying to pass off a phoney bill on one of your neighboring vendors was the ultimate shot!

Partial quote from above:

I should have been more careful with my words, forgot movieman likes to pick at and play semantics with everything said by everyone.

Movieman, great job you got another post under your belt and contradicted me, hope your proud of yourself.

In the written communications we all do here in the threads, WORDS are the only thing we have to express our ideas. (emoticons don't count for much) If we can't write what we mean, why write at all ? Nothing wrong with carefully choosing one's word...IMHO. And the use of "everyone" probably isn't accurate as not everyone writes one thing in sentence one and then completly changes 180 degrees in the last sentence of his/her post. I think you'll also find there are threads in which I have responded to your comments without an inch of contrary opinion, but each of us (yes, even you) are entitled to opinions and the right to express them.

As to the notion that I am trying to accumlate posts, nothing could be further from the truth; I only care about the comments made by others and those I am making myself, not about HOW MANY I have made. On the other hand, I HAVE thought about starting a thread entitled "The most unusual sexual toy I have found (in Cascade Blue)" in order to up the number of THREADS I have started. And yes, dear reader, THAT is sarcasm.  ;D
