Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: New unit won today
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:09:30 PM »
Just really strange that this entire crowd would go to war with one another over old TVs and dirty rugs and bit those units up to 600 or 700 but walk away cold from high end office stuff....bizzare  haha

First of all congrats on getting some lockers...yesterday you were ready to quit !

As to the office furniture, either they didn't want to do the work (or didn't have truck and manpower) OR maybe it's like it is in my area....almost all of us pass on it. It's a glut on the market here where business furn is plentiful.

I saw an architect unit with really nice industrial shelving that I would have liked, an old plotter, etc. (boxes of old douments and plans) I would have liked it (for the shelving mainly) at around $275 and let it go at $300. I saw the guy put the plotter on eBay and it didn't sell at the $200 he was asking. He hasn't been back to an auction since (been 8 weeks since he got it) and he hasn't had another item on eBay. Guess he is on vacation.

Meanwhile let us know how it goes.

New episode starts in about 15 minutes.....

I watched the preview on the network's website. Looks like business as usual as the boys
fight for some good lockers, tools, etc.

Edit: Half way through Darrel has gotten 2 lockers to fill up the big truck his son drove.
After the break coming back to a tool lkr with Dave, Jarrod and even Barry going for it. Barry likes
the duffel bag.

Edit 2: Barry starts throwing stuff out looking for a collectible and doesn't find it.

Darrel finds M-16 rounds and a pistol mag with hollow points....no guns...thank you for REALITY for a change.

Dave risks $60 and says "..if you can't risk $60 in this business you've got no business being here". He strikes out and gives stuff to Goodwill...apparently he did 30 days of community service in 2008 but he doesn't say why.

Not an exciting show, but a bit more realistic than usual.

Bottom line, when I was asked to provide our company's sample list of the auctions in the Houston area, I did, and it was so large that it crashed the server. I think that speaks for itself.

HA !  I guess I should have put a smiley face after my comment that your list crashed the server.

The server managed to survive your list...now if we all can survive the spam. I don't think you can argue that aspect of what we have been talking about here today.

You are not a paying sponsor.
You post your Houston link often.

I think that might qualify you as a spammer.

3724
Yeah, it's possible that someone could do that. If I find my content on another website then, after the court proceedings are over with, I guess I will have to find time to manage two storage auction information services.

I have to call some storage facilities, so I have to run. It has been entertaining!

Actually, the folks in my area who subscribe to the service and then "resell" the data they receive are only emailing it out to a few of their cronies. If one subscribes and it goes out to 8 people it has only cost each of them about $10 bucks for the year's worth of updates.

I would never advocate this kind of "theft of services", but it happens and it's a fact of the business.

Time to pull an Ameche, TC, and again if you don't get that reference you're not old enough...that even predates the reference to Paul Harvey.  ;D

Heres the crowd a lot of us would like to see:

And this one is even better:

Well, we can DREAM anyway.

Images no longer available.

3726
:o now there's an idea!

Houston, we've got a problem.  ;)

3727
I feel like MC HAMMER "you can't touch this"!

All kidding aside, if you think this list is impressive you should check out the sample list at storageauctions.com, they cover California Auctions but it looks like they do a good job as well.

They charge $84 a year (only available by the year) and their data is often incorrect. Personally (as you might guess) I don't subscribe to it but I know people who do.  Some of those subscribers then take the weekly "update" they receive in email and "sub-let" (that is resell the data) to other poor schlubs thus depriving the original provider of income.  How about it Houston ?

Your list in post #30 briefly kicked the forum server off-line, but it is up and running again.

After seeing the Houston link come up untold numbers of times I decided to look at it even though I live in California.

Some interesting and some straightforward info there, but of course some self-serving info too.

My favorite part though is this:

It's a picture of a crowd at what I assume is an auction in the greater Houston and surrounding area.
It will be up to readers here to decide if that is a SMALL, MEDIUM or LARGE crowd.

Now maybe if it had a cutline under it that said...."avoid crowds like this" I would have found it more legit, but...it didn't.

Movieman said, "Since I can't seem to wrestle any lockers from the thundering herds of newbies and regulars over-paying, I have plenty of time to come on here".  Perhaps if he lived in the Houston area and was a member of our website, he could avoid the crowded auctions and spend more time making money.

Perhaps, and perhaps I could win the lottery...if I only had 5 more correct numbers.

3731
Hey you know what, I started doing a search again, and now I was able to find a whole lot more of auctions... :).....maybe I dont need to buy a list.
Thanks and sorry tclane
but maybe I'll get the 10 day trial since its only 4.99.

You can send a postal money order to Mr. A and to me....I at least will not refuse it !  ;D

Seriously though, I will try to leave the URL's out whenever possible.

This statement was made by you at 10:14 which was not too many minutes after YOU STARTED a new thread at 9:54 which had as its central component a message from you about your service in Houston.

Here's a thread for you to look at, and maybe you would like to contribute to it, but be sure NOT to put your link in it...that would be BEYOND bad form.

Edit: that would include your link in your signature area !

Suggestion Center / What IS the forum's policy on SPAM ?
« on: March 16, 2011, 12:33:52 PM »
Aside from giving forum SPONSORS threads (??) the other thing I see is SPAM from 2 or 3 (or more) people who are members but on a regular basis push off their services on anyone reading a post from them. Some of these are more aggregious than others, but still....

It's like going to a movie at a theatre (where you pay as much as $10 depending on your area) and then being assaulted with something that is supposed to be entertainment but has COMMERICALS in it.  At the theatre, "First Look" is a half hour long set of "features" interspersed with promos for upcoming TV shows, commercials for acne cream and you name it.  This isn't a strictly parallel comparison, but I think you get my drift.

I know it is fairly lax here in regard to being "off topic" in any given thread and a certain amount of lattitude is always nice in several areas (including spam), but I would also think that the half dozen or so PAYING sponsors would have a complaint about text based (not banner ads) populating the threads where discussion takes place.

Just throwing this out there. Don't know what (or if) anything should be done about it.

3734
Not all my posts have a link in them....... some have two or three. LOL

Seriously though, I will try to leave the URL's out whenever possible.

As of this posting (mine) you have made 27 posts. Six of them do not have your link in them. Those six are in threads started by someone else. (that is commendable).

To be fair to you, I also found an other 4 or so that did not have the link, but they were in threads you had started, so it would have been double or triple spam if you HAD included them there.

Since I can't seem to wrestle any lockers from the thundering herds of newbies and regulars over-paying, I have plenty of time to come on here and research .... and count, so watch those spams !

3735
Well, it certainly is possible to find all these auctions no matter what state you're in however, most people won't go to this much trouble...and yes, I know increased success might demand it, but how sucessful do we have to be ?

If you've got a place to live, a way to get around and food and water (and an internet connection) what more do you need? MAYBE MORE OF EVERYTHING ?  ;D
