Craigslist / Re: Tires.....again.

Tires would be a good thing to barter I would think. Have you tried?

I have visited the forum from the iPad.. I don't think there's a need to change the format for mobile tablet users. Smartphone users maybe.. but how large of a market is that? I'd think pretty small..

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #9.....September, 2013
« on: September 12, 2013, 01:06:02 PM »
This month has been a weird month for bidding. I haven't bought any yet this month, but I'm going to have to buy something again here real soon! Went to an auction on Monday. A game room type room came up, pool table (not slate) real nice padded high top chairs (2) with table, neon signs (3) and some other posters and misc stuff. All game room/man cave related stuff. Went for $250. Next room, garbage everywhere, looked like it was just thrown in there. Couches from the 90's (fabric with wood and gold trim stuff), bedroom stuff. It may have been a whole house, but all dated, cheap furniture. Goes for $800. There were also about 40 people at this auction. Today went to one with 15 units. I stayed for about 10 and split to open the store. Nothing but crap except for 1 unit. Had a real nice tiger oak table, gun cases which the crowd knew to keep their mouth shut about, and tons of boxes and other misc furniture. It went for $600. Good price for the room. Too much for me to take on in my tiny space!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Hybrid auction/picking/storage??

The one here is actually a metal barn located in the middle of a field where horses are boarded. We have always called it the auction barn. Stinks like horse poop, it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter but hey we are used to it after all of these years. It is just how it works in the country. At least it is dry.

The closest barn style auction to me is about an hour drive.. They have a live small animal auction Fridays and household stuff on Saturdays. From what I'm told, you can see and smell the animals that didn't get picked up yet if you take part in the Saturday auction. The auction literally takes place in a red barn.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Partners
« on: September 09, 2013, 10:25:21 PM »
I've never had the desire to take on a partner. What it sounds like, is your partner just wants to do the buying, and not the dirty work of selling. That's why I don't want a partner. I don't like the idea of someone else betting with my money, even if it's a half investment.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Bootleg Movies?

Many people still buy DVDs because it's a cheap way to get movie art. Others like the liner notes. This is a reason why records are coming back in a big way and bands today are recording on records again. Right now, this trend is mainly in harder rock, lesser known bands. But the trend is swinging upward! They sell the record for $10-$20 and it comes with download rights for a digital version of their music.

Craigslist / Using Craigslist To Find Auctions
« on: September 09, 2013, 08:07:05 AM »
I tried this just a few minutes ago and I was pleasantly surprised by the result!

When you go to your local craigslist site, type in "auction" in the search on the main page. Once the results come up, use your computer's search function (CTRL+F) and type in "auction" again. This will weed out any ads that say auction in their listing because what they're selling was bought by them at an auction, etc. I was able to find a couple of storage auctions using this that isn't advertised through the typical sites or through a popular newspaper.

You can also toggle the search to community and events using the dropdown at the top of the page. But the for sale/wanted pages seem to have the most information.

I was able to find a TON of antique auctions, household auctions, estate sales, etc. using this method.

Since I've opened the shop, I've been more selective with what I buy, and I haven't bought as many lockers. This is mainly due to space, but also my level of criticism has gone way up. I don't want to sell the crappy units, even though that's what I've been selling at the flea market. So I've been attending more local piece auctions. Takes a hell of a lot longer, but it also gives me an education on the value of items. So even if I don't buy much (I always buy SOMETHING) I'm getting good lessons.

Craigslist / Re: Using Craigslist services section for labor
« on: September 08, 2013, 05:09:23 PM »
By and large, I'm able to move most things by myself and a hand truck. I move couches, beds, dressers, whatever. But the awkward pieces, like exercise equipment, I can't move with a hand truck... I usually avoid these rooms, because I don't want to pay for the help.. But... at $25 to move one piece, or a guaranteed sale, not a bad way to go!

Craigslist / Do You Post In Other Areas?
« on: September 06, 2013, 11:11:26 AM »
Craigslist strongly advises against buying in other areas, however, people still post in other areas for sale. If you are in an area where areas are close, it makes sense to me! I've got 3 other areas in about an hour to hour and a half drive to me. Fayetteville, Greensboro, and Greenville. Granted, I have not posted in these areas, but when I get an item with provenance local to those areas, I would think that I would get better action and prices by posting in those areas within driving distance.

Thoughts?

eBay / Re: Which is better?

The way I was buying shipping materials was way too expensive. I was running to the local Walgreens and picking up a manila bubble wrap envelope ($1.29) or a small box ($1.99).. combine that with the actual postage, I was around $4.00 for the most expensive option. I do credit back any overages on my shipping, but it was pretty close at $4. I wasn't shipping very often because I just didn't put stuff up on ebay. But now that I'm in a store, and I need to generate income from my smalls during the week, ebay is a necessity.

Also, my hot wheels that are currently listed is in packaging, not loose. Takes more than just a drop in an envelope and out the door to preserve the cardboard package.

I went ahead and bought several smaller boxes through ebay to accommodate the hot wheels that I have up now, should work well for other smalls as well!

I bought the bigger boxes in adjustable for other stuff I have up there. I'm also going to post hot wheels cars in lots rather than piece it out. Still probably a big box for that, but I like the versatility for that size box.

MM, I checked out the link, exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks!

You guys just cut my shipping in half in some cases. Thanks! But I feel like an idiot for not checking ebay for boxes.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Magazines?
« on: September 05, 2013, 07:58:03 PM »
Never had luck with magazines. I recently bought a locker with a lot of Rolling Stones (mostly 90's) and Car & Driver (again mostly 90's). Also had another locker with Vietnam and WWII magazines (late 80's early 90's) and never sold a single one. I still have the war magazines because I'm hopeful that the subject matter will eventually find the right buyer. The others, I used as craigslist free ads to get people into the store.
