Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: MY RAT UNIT

Gratz and ouch at the same time Ladylocks.  Read your post over on storageheroes blog.  The collectibles are going to be very hit and miss right now.  With the economy in the dumps, collectible things are the first to get axed.  Baseball, coke, nascar, etc. all are in the dumps.

I would do like StorMe suggested and try the auction house.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Staged units.
« on: March 24, 2012, 07:20:34 PM »
That is what I do when I hit auctions.  I take a print-out of the auction listing with me.  If the unit is not on the list I bid only on what I see.  No gambling in those units.  I've only gotten 1 unit so far that was on the list and still looked iffy when was searching it.

Lol - I only point out items to three other people.  One is my wife if she is with me.  The other is my two auction buddies.  We help each other out.  Now sometimes we bid against each other.  Most of the time however we collaborate looking over a unit as what I'm interested in the other two normally are not.  Or if it's a unit one of us really wants the other backs off.  A give n take relationship.  As for comments, pointing things out w/ my light for the competetion - nope not going to happen.  I've let some of the old regulars borrow my light but all the new faces are on their own.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Scrap metal - is it worth it?
« on: March 23, 2012, 04:19:32 PM »
Dang - that would of been a nice scrap haul.

I now have both daughters doing the scrapping with me.  I think they really love being able to destroy stuff and working with tools.  I'm going to have to really up my work to find appliances and things to scrap.  Running out of motors and things to tear down.

Some of those prices are just scary.  We've had a 10x20 in January that had lots of goodie type boxes showing.  Lady that won the locker said everything was in the unit.  I'm VERY skeptical of that since she is one of the dredge buyers and overpays on trash units that even I wouldn't touch.  No one that I've talked to has seen these goodies in her store either.

$93 for a trunk is just way stupid.  I'll gamble $50 all day long on 1/4 full units with totes, trunks, but I want to see a little something.  Prices in my area are still all over the place.  Small town auctions are dozen people and under $200 units.  Just not seen anything really worth my time/effort.  Main city auctions are just all over the place.  Many auctions with 30-50 people, and normally the same dozen of us bidding.  A few newbie bidders.  Think prices are staying up in my area due to those few newbies wasting money but also the store people fighting each other for inventory.  Will see how things are next month.

No flea for me Saturday since is stormy now and 50% chance Sat and Sunday.  Going to try and hit the flea to shop for a change and look for some yardsales.  Not holding my breath.  Need some new smalls and computers to get me by.  Running low on items to list on ebay.

(this coming from a guy w/ 2 daughters - one that is already talking about driving at 13......)

They should be posted in the legals like everything else I think.  We do have many of them here since only have 1 port.  Want to say I saw 1 auction for a place last year.

Check with the port authority and the companies that do the actual shipping.  Check their websites.

I've not watched AH or many of the shows in ages.  However, chest are one of the first things I like to open.  Safes, lock boxes, chest, metal cash boxes - all are things I love to find and open.  Granted 99% of the time they are empty, have paperwork, or pictures....but I still like to gamble.

Check your library for a "records book" if you don't want to spend time on ebay.  As gapajeff said condition is everything.  Can mean the difference between $1 and $100 bucks.  Conditon of the cover and the album itself.

Myself - I would do like Drew and check ebay.  But, I'm starting to live on ebay checking my listings 4-5 times a day.

Ya - I know is wishful thinking.  I think I'll count this year how many toddler butts get toasty riding around in the stroller in July and Aug. this year.

Already getting warm in the 85 degree weather.  The crowds have to go down.  If not I'll have to clean the hood of my car so can fry some eggs while waiting for all the looky-loos in July.

I always take a listing of the units listed in the paper.  I then compare it to the units that we see.  If you get a unit that isn't listed in the paper it is normally

1) a unit that someone has called and given-up (what they say)
2) a "company" unit - where they take all the trash, abandoned stuff from other units and put it all in one.

Both types of units you best bid on what you see.  There is even less of a chance of hidden treasure.  Unless you figure bills from 3 different families and pictures of a white family mixed in with 2 black famlies a treasure.

Or - you can get this (just saw it listed on website when was looking for auctions this saturday)

#37, last rented to unknown squatter, contents unknown

Today's auction was canceled as everyone paid up  :(  50% chance or rain Friday and Saturday, 40% Sunday - so flea market is out this weekend.  No auctions for saturday either unless travel 90 miles or so (tempting).  Next week we have a few auctions but it's looking like I'll miss them due to work (dang meetings).  So after the 29th we are done till the 6th.  Luck has it I'm off on the 6th so hoping the one place that has auctions on the 6th doesn't pay up.

D-38: Empire Payphones, Inc. - Sevenpay phones & Parts.
R-58 L. Ware: Two beds, Sofa, Dining Table and chairs, end table, dresser and misc. boxes, pictures.
A069: C Reed: Four tool boxes, TC, Car ramps and misc. boxes.
D024: C Reed: Tool boxes, engine lift, ladders, dollies, and misc. boxes.

Flip side things are selling on CL and Ebay.

Flea Markets / Re: Anyone in the Athens Ga area?
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:58:36 PM »
Please do that and take some pictures if you can.  PM when you have it ready and I'll send you my email address.  At only 1/2 off the games I'll have to think hard about it.  Not worth the $80 in gas for a round-trip to Athens and back.  Less I find some auctions while I'm up that way.  Will look forward to hearing from ya.

I highly doubt it will sell.  However, as my daughter said about herself...."I've never taken one of those apart yet".  So will get the few bucks worth of scrap out of it and spend time with daughter.  Is part of the reason I do this.

Most I've found on a gift card so far was $33 or something like that to Best Buy.  Gotten a few $.40, buck here, two there, etc.  So far it's always been to a place I shop at anyways so I count that into my profit.  Is money I've not had to spend.

Good luck today - hope you have fun.

Ebay can be your friend to move some of your smalls at a higher price point.  Just have to live with all the fee's and other hassles.  Is worth it IMO.
