Garage Sales / Re: Looking forward to the summer to have some garage sales
« on: February 03, 2011, 08:49:28 PM »
I used to go to garage sales a lot but pretty much stopped that when I started doing auctions and then flea market sales. I sell on Saturday and most of the garage sales are on Saturday.

I DO still shop the flea markets though, a little on Saturday before and after I sell and then on Sunday.

Anyway, my CITY has a regulation limiting garage sales to 2 per year. This is to protect neighborhoods more than anything else I would guess.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Crowds?

I'm worn out at the end of the day !  No thanks.

Some do, some don't. But here's another spin on pictures going back to the original owner.

I made an appointment to return some pics. Thirty minutes before the appt, pic owner called and
said she couldn't make it. Would call me back. Two weeks later....no call.

Garbage truck came today. Bye, bye pictures.

Good job Mr. A !

Nice to get one now and again and when they shine, even better.

I posted my win yesterday in the WEST section of the Neck of the Woods threads, but I don't know how many people get there! ?  See that post for some details.

I got back in it today and the 10 tubs in the back corner....not good until #10 on the bottom. Some Disney collectibles (5, wish it was 50).

I'll make money, nut not a biggie.

Yes, the jumping happens...annoying. You can just quit and type another response to finish your thoughts.

Only you can decide if it is worth it for your time, effort and the reward you get.

It's like any moment in history. Those who are "older" than you relate differently to today's world because of what they experienced before. Social etiquette is dying out as an example. I am always pleased when someone I hold a door for says "thank you" and usually that person is older...or youger and was taught some manners.

Don't get me started on people who don't signal turns, who stop in the middle of an intersection and don't know what to do next etc...but I digress.

The new folks who are complaining (if they are) about crowds now will look back at Feb of 2012 someday and say "I remember when...."

Well, I always have gone by the doubling rule. I want to double what I paid for it. Three or four times would be nice, but happens less frequently.

Each person has to decide if its worth it. At the flea market it's rare for me to take less than a $1 for any item, but once in a while I've given in to 50 cents if the poor soul looks like it's his last quarter, two dimes and a nickel !

I track all my expenses and income and use a formula that pops up what percentage of return I am at on a running basis. At years end the ideal (as I said) is to be at least at 2x times the money. My best year I was at 2.74x and in 2010 I ended up at 1.99x the money.

I don't know if that is possible or not...seems like it would be possible. Check it out in Illinois and let us know.

I also got a motorcycle in another lkr. This one the auctioneer walked in, found a baggy on the seat with the registration papers and key inside. Got that lkr for $600, sold the 3/4 sized "Harley" replica for $500 to the storage property manager who gave it to his grand-son.

I have a question about that.  I'm not sure if Quads are titled vehicles where you are, but what happens if you buy a unit-PODS or regular storage- that has a car, motorcycle or quad-any titled vehicle?  How do you get ownership papers on such an item?
In California quads are tittled and to use one in a public forest they need a green sticker that you get when your register. Take the vin number to your dmv and they will tell you the status on the registration. If it has back taxes due you will have to pay them and there might be other difficulties too....like I had when getting Honda Finane to release their interest even though they had stopped trying to collect from the previous owner FIVE years before I got the quad. Took 11 months to clear dmv/honda finance...with Honda being the biggest holdup. I sold it 10 days after I had the pink slip in my name.

So DMV first and go from there. Now one fellow bought a Harley frame and boxes of parts. He went to DMV and turns out the bike was stolen. Police came to his home, took it away and searched his home as well. The stuff he had around was mostly used ad he had reeceipts from some of the storage lokrs he had bought. He got off OK but was out the $2000 plus he paid for  the locker.

Good news on the crowd situation on Wednesday, Feb 2, 2011 in Central California.

See my post in the WEST section of Your Neck of the Woods....crowd was down on a sunny day.

I also include in that post a couple of short stories on 3 "new buyers".

Part 2.  I bid on one other but a friend got it for $90....I wanted another $80 to have a matched pair! He said it was a break even after he went through it later...a 5 x 5.

Then there were 3 guys who bought one together .... a 10 x 30 completely tumbled down and with an upside down sofa in the middle. They got it for $65. I talked to them. This was their 3rd lkr(other 2 were at other locations on other days). They did OK on number 1 (forget how much they said), took a bath (bad) on #2 for $250 and now this one. When I commented on the dump runs they said they had free dumping priveleges in their county. I didn't remind them that the dump there was 40 miles from where they bought the locker. Trip home to get the truck(3) one or two trips to the dump....a lot of gas. And it didn't look too promising in the sales dept.

Finally, last guy got one for $325. His first. Looked clean. I would have liked it for $100 or so in order to make some money, and this was the real "new buyer" purchase..happy he got one....will see after sales take place. May do OK, but looks break even to me. So that's a day in the central valley  !

Edit: Found a Levenger Rosewood fountain pen in a nice wood box and the outer paper box and instructions. They go on the web site for $50 and up though I could not find the rosewood model. Ebay has Levengers from $25 and up. It's a start !

West / Got one today....and comments on some California "New Buyers"
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:54:34 PM »
Finally got one. Been about 3 weeks since the last one.

Today part of the difference was definitely the LACK of a crowd. There were only 20 or so total and 8 of those were the old-timers and people I bid against on a regular basis.

I got a 10 by 30 about half full with more bigger pieces than I like, but I sell them cheap to other buyers and let them handle and sell them. Ten big totes in back corner I haven't gotten to yet, but may not be that great given the appearance of the rest of the locker.

It only cost $80 and a week ago with 100 people in attendance I know it would have gone for $300 or more.
The sun was out....guess people were elsewhere.

*************
Two new guys  bought a 62 Impala body; it was off the frame which was leaned against the side of the locker. It had no lights, no motor or any thing exept the body. They paid $200 and said they could get 3 grand the way it was. I don't know...maybe you do.

Continuing this in next post as screen is jumping here.
