Picker's Paradise / Re: Estate Sale feelings
« on: June 06, 2013, 05:42:02 PM »
Went to a sale this morn and saw a copper pan.  I love copper cookware but frankly estate/garage sales usually price them way to high.  But I always look.

Unlike the one i found a couple weeks ago this one was spotless.  Tin lining was like new.  You could tell it had been used but just a few times....or they really took care of it.  Looked at price: $150.  Typical.

I was admiring it and one of the kids commented "oh...I don't want to ruin a sale but that thing sucks"

Asked why?

"It burns everything! It's beautiful.  Looks great for decoration.  I just don't want you to waste your money if your looking for cookware"

Told her its to much for me anyway and she looked at price and said she'd knock off five bucks.
That's when I noticed it wasn't $150....it was $15!  Now $10!!

I guess they didnt know how to cook with copper.  .
I tested it.  Made pancakes, Best thing to determine heat transfer.  I burned the cr*p out of the first two but then got the heat correct.

Now I could make $100-$125 proifit or...yeah.....I'm keeping it.   ;D
I can't get a Walmart pan this cheap and it will last the rest of my life!

But the point of posting in this thread:
I still felt a touch of guilt paying so little just because they didnt know what they had...
I'm just to much into Karma.    Had it been an estate sale company, screw them.  But this was the family.

Picker's Paradise / Picks that haven't worked out?
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:52:29 AM »
Just wondering on what picks you've made that haven't worked out.  Not so much on it turned out to be broken or was a reproduction....

I'm currently at a loss why a few items haven't sold.
I still have the Makita router.  Like new. Top model.  Not a single call.

I've changed the Ad, adjusted price up & down, changed pictures......

What items have you picked that just didnt sell?

BTW, the clean up after a .38 is much easier than doing a 12ga. Clean up, JMHO… It’s all about better time management…

Vincent 'Vinnie' Antonelli: Richie loved to use 22s because the bullets are small and they don't come out the other end like a 45, see, a 45 will blow a barn door out the back of your head and there's a lot of dry cleaning involved

One of my top ten favorite movies.........

An AR-15 is nothing more than a .22 with a bunch of gunpowder - LOL!

It's a bit more technical than that......   :-[

If you really want to do some damage, a hollow point .38 snub nose would be about the best for home defense. Simple, small and easy to use for just about anybody. Add in a couple of speed loaders and you are good to go.

I'm with you on the .38
Plus it's got 'the look'.  Even the smaller models. It's intimidating looking.

I won't be seeing my friend until Saturday.  If you still have it I'll get his opinion.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking at estate sales

I've never tried estate sales. The thought of going to some stinky house with stinky people....

Some are pretty bad.   Had a run last week.  Every house smelled like cat piss.
Only twice have I had to leave.  One smelled of feces, the other.....I swear whoever passed away was still in the house.  So bad.

If its just one item and your not trying to sell as the real deal the authorities pretty much look the other way.  There is a risk but pretty low.

eBay is out.   Craigslist is a maybe.   Someone might flag it.

Car salesmen would be my first stop but I'm in the industry.   I know a lot of them since I'm on the lots around town.   But I've watched guys just pull up and sell those guys ties and shoes and watches....give it a shot.

Got any pictures?

. I only bought a couple of things that first day, but went back the next day and made a couple of major scores as they had brought more stuff out...sometimes it pays to go late !

I use to be the guy out there at 5am signing up on the list at estate sales or waiting an hour for them to open.
Then I learned that the others doing that and myself were looking for totally opposite items.
I'm sure I've lost out on occasion but over all its not worth my time.

I tend to go a couple hours after opening then return on the 50% off day.

Things are cleared out and scattered so easier to go thru.  It's cheaper.  They are willing to 'deal'
And.....like you said.....they put more crap out!

Took a year before a company told me this!   See that locked room?  It's not the stuff the family wants to keep.   It's stuff to be put out so there are good items the whole weekend.

I've never been good with is fishing gear. All looks the same to me.  One lure could be $50 while the next that looks identical to me is $0.99.

I'll show the pics to my friend and see if he can identify anything.  He's one of those guys that gets up at 2am, drives an hour, hikes an hour, fishes for an hour or two, hikes out and heads to work.....little crazy about fishing.

Going off the video I'd have to agree with he victim. The arresting officer and Sargent need to be fired.

I've never understood how you can be arrested for resisting arrested.  Charged with, yes....After they say "your under arrest".  You need to be placed under arrest before you can resist it!

I also don't like the "searching you for our saftey"
Guy committed no visible crime.  You don't feel safe?  Walk away.

Really wouldnt sit well with me if owner or emloyees were bidding.
Anyone with access to unit before auction shouldn't be allowed.

I thought agents of facilities weren't allowed by law to bid?   But maybe that's just a rule at some bigger facilities.  Facilities don't HAVE to hold an auction, do they?   Cant they just keep the stuff and write off the persons debt?

Sweet!    I'm off to dig up my grandma's flower beds!   She used marbles as ground cover decoration round her roses.   Must be a gold mine in here by now!   :)
