Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Stupid people piss me off
« on: September 03, 2011, 05:42:06 PM »
lol, I usually do that, but this time my main goal was to get rid of all my inventory. However I dont usually mark it up that much, I usually end up marking up double of what they tried to drop me on. For instance, this was one dallar, she wanted it for 50 cents, so I would of usually say ok, now its $2.00

Low price items like that I usually price double what I want to get for it, because there's always some cheap ass genius who wants to haggle from $1.00 to fifty cents.  (Why do they usually just pay the price on the larger items, but ***** over the little stuff?) Anyway, that way I get what I want out of it, even if they do dicker, and I usually make more than I wanted.
They think they got one over on me, when I got what I wanted anyway at the worst.

Garage Sales / Re: Garage sale today

yup yup yup, So now my inventory is empty except for those decorative chinese block prints that I am going to sale during the Asian Festival, A Christmas Town that I can sell closer to Xmas, and 5 clowns that are collectibles. 4 of them are from 1981 and one is from 1979. But everything else left from the yard sale I donated and got a 385 dollar tax write off. Which is better than I thought I would have gotten on a tax write off. :)

Could you post a pic of the asian prints?  I'd love to see them.

@rulesforrebels - In the beginning, I heard a lot of negativity from the "live auction regulars" as we call them. A bunch of "it'll never work - I have to see it in person." But it's working and working really well. Just as bwd111 said above, his best (read: most profitable) finds have come from us and he's been doing this for almost 10 years. Even he was a big skeptic in the beginning. He'll tell you, among many others, that being there in person isn't as necessary as you're eluding to.

Also note - our software is in constant development. We're working on a feature now that will provide much more detail in regards to the unit's contents.

But I'm glad that it sounds as though you have a pretty open mind about it. For you, my biggest pitch is the fact that you can follow your live auction schedule around all day long, day after day, and may come home empty-handed. Lots of efficiency potentially lost. With our service, you have upwards of 7 days to study the contents, bid on only things you are interested in, then make that drive to simply pay and vacate the unit.

Funny you mention the fact that the industry will never be the same since the advent of the TV shows. We actually started this business before the shows came out (almost a year before). The shows certainly have helped us, but we had our biggest client locked in before the shows even started.

If you're looking for information on how to improve it and get more business, especially on the photography end, let me know.  I'm an appraiser in my other job, but looking at what you're presenting, there are definitely ways to improve on it.

Agreed.  Call the local media, and then call the AMA.  They wouldn't care much for that, especially with the flippant attitude the clinic had when you called.

Seems Barry is friends with the Producer, and he really does only do it for the fun of it.

Latest on encounter with former locker owner on the "safe locker"...

She was to contact me last Tuesday the 30th of August, 2011 but didn't. I then got a call on Wednesday on my answering machine but she only left her number, no message.

I called her back and left a message on HER machine and asked her at that time to let me know the next time she left me a message what her current intentions were. It's now Friday, Sept 2, 2011 and didn't hear from her Thursday.

These people (old lkr owners) are for the most part (not all) FLAKES and can't keep their lives together. I think JRoss is right when he says I'll hear from her in a couple of weeks and I can just imagine her surprise when LO and BEHOLD the bulk of her goods are GONE !  ;D

If she calls back I'd make it quite clear she's breached your agreement once.  You're not dealing with her any longer.  It is now over and done with.  Then put a call block on the number.

Most valuable: Broken Gold Necklace I found in an office desk drawer that I sold for $500 back when gold was ONLY $900 an ounce. Almost new Knaack Gang box that I sold for $475.

Favorite: Surround sound amplifier for an Ipod/mp3 player that I kept. It was about $250 new at the store and I would have never bought one but I use it all the time. Mosin Sagant WWII Sniper Rifle.

You found a Mosin Nagant?   Crap.  That is sweet.  Great rifle!! Deer hear you have one and they just lay down and wait on you rather than wasting energy trying to run!!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Auction near home
« on: September 01, 2011, 08:29:36 PM »
Spent a couple months up that way, in a border town. Hurley, WI and I think I remember it correctly, Ironwood, MI. Two states, two towns into one town, separated by a road with a train track bridge over it.

I spent a year living in Pound, Wisconsin.  Finally had enough and decided to return to Georgia.

I prefer Storage Wars to Auction Hunters.  Auction Hunters never gets a loser, and I don't know anyone that always hits a home run, especially on the 'we travel the country and buy lockers' stunt.
I got a kick out of the $1,000,000 Stradivarius Violin that wouldn't get $200.  Hester seems to think everything he buys is top of the line.  (Remember the used tires and other crap he said was worth an 'easy 1k?)
He must have some of the dumbest and richest customers alive if he gets 2/3 of what he says that stuff is worth.  $375 for a washer and dryer set?  Don't they have Best Buy's in Cali?

On furniture I usually dont deal with it unless its solid wood. I dont like couches since I usually end up getting the ones that are messed up, and its always on a side Icant see from the door. Particle board I cant even give away for free. So I stick to solid wood furniture. No matter the year.

Particle board crap gets head of the line privileges on the ride to the dump. Can't stand that crap.  I won't buy a unit because I see furniture, unless, as you state, I can see that it is good stuff (wood) that I can refinish if needed.  I always look for different things as my focus.

Well, I just "poured" them in as I said I would, but I have to think its closer to 50 than it would be 75. Could be 40, could be 60.

As I arranged them in the box for a good fit I did notice a lot of the bears which I think are the most popular. I saw a USA one, a green one, maybe 6 to 10 of the bears; a dragon. Maybe 5 or so didn't have tags on them.

Anyway, I only need to seal the box, print the label and take it to the UPS store.

Thanks!

All done.  At the very least it will make the wife happy, as she loves stuffed animals.  Don't worry about the 'pics' request in the pm.  Just send those boogers on.  I'll keep you advised as to how the Beanie Babies turn out.

We're almost good to go. I am sending you a pm at this time also with the total cost and my PayPal address for sending the funds. Please check the "other" option when sending the money.   Thanks!

Will take care of it.  Got an idea of about how many there are?

I'll agree partially on the furniture.  Unless I can verify that it is in good shape, I'm not really interested in it.  Reality is, the unit I bought had a ratty looking couch, and I took an axe to it so that it wouldn't take up as much room.  Same with the two dressers that were in it.

Benluby...

It's 8 pm here in California...haven't gotten the Beanies boxed up or weighed yet. Will do it first thing Thursday morn the 1st of Sept and will PM you the results. I got your PM with the needed info.  More later...I'm watching the SW Unlocked episode at the moment.

Not a problem bud.  When you get the info let me know and I'll go do the paypal thing.  (To whoever had the Indy dolls, PM me some info and what you'll take for them.  I may actually be interested, but not at 250 a pop.)
