I like how they wait two-ish months before saying anything.  No notice sent.  No info on ebay.....

And people think I'm paranoid because I use a mail drop and prepaid cards.

Shanking cream?

Guys my ipad thinks homeless people need shanking cream.......

Here we are, almost May and I just got back from my first auction of the year.
Not many close by lately and I've been to busy during the week. 
Tend to avoid weekend auction but this was like 10 minutes away and I wasn't doing anything....

Only two units.  About forty people.....until they said two units and it dropped to 30ish.

First unit, most of you would have loved!  20x30.  Nice, and I mean NICE, furniture.  Stainless appliances with that plastic sticker (like window stickers) stuff still on it.  Older but clean *ss john dear mower.  Everything was clean, well packed, u-hail boxes.......
I went up to $1000.  Did the back away planning on letting others bid out then jump back in.  But it hit $4500.  Little to steep for me.   I was happy for the guy that got it.  He was just looking at buying a similar fridge and it was $3000.  So basically he got the unit for $1500.  Hard to be upset for not being able to get it when the winner is cool and so happy.

I got the second unit.  Except for some looky loo's everyone left when they saw it.  It was me and another guy.  $25.  Five boxes.
1) glassware, mostly chipped.
2) plates/bowls, mostly chipped
3) bathroom stuff, ugly.
4) bakeware, well used
5) bedroom/living room knick knacks

I got a few cookie sheets.  Found a set of "diamond" stud earrings.  Haven't tested, real silver base but the color and refraction seems off.  Either fake or worse quality ever sold.  Don't have high hopes. They look to me like those you get at Marshals or Sears for $49.99 during Xmas time......

So basically I paid $25 for two used cookie sheets, a $20 tax write off and a $3 coupon to value village.....

I do feel bad for your mothers circumstances.  But she entered into a contract and defaulted.
The facility is in business to make a profit off renting storage space.   If your mother isn't paying then what are they to do?  They need that unit emptied to rent to someone else.

Now, they can just donate goods to charity.  This means you still loose your belongings and still owe. Then you have collections, interest, bad credit......
Or they auction it off, in which case, we are paying off, partially paying off or in some cases paying off AND you make some money.

I don't know anyone in my crowd that won't give back "memories" beyond the personal stuff unless that "memory" item is high value......in which case, your mother could have sold it herself and paid her debts.

I've run into people that have said "oh...that was my grandmas....."
Hey, it's life. You do what you have to.  If you value possession of a material object over selling it to pay your debts or putting food on the table you need to examine your priorities.  I personally don't own anything I wouldn't sell to take care of my family and pay my obligations.

I was at an auction once that this man and wife were giving a sob story, didn't have money to pay for unit. I found out they had a $50 unit.  Were only into facility for an out $200. In the unit was a set of big'ol swamper tires on rims.  Totally would have paid off debt, plus had extra, plus wouldn't of needed unit anymore since the tires took up 75% of it.   Then on top of it, I saw them later at a Red Robin chain smoking (yeah, this was way back when) drinking and eating.   I know I can't get out of RR for less than $30 with out drinks.  So they can't pay $200 bill but can smoke, drink and eat out?

You see this enough and any guilt you had vanishes.  Situations like your mothers are rare.


Also, think of it this way.
If you had a house and a friend lost his place and you let him put all his stuff in your garage and after several months, he hasn't paid a dime yet your paying a power bill to heat the garage so his stuff is safe,  another person says to you: I'll give you $300/month to let me store my stuff in your garage......

How long before you asked the first one to get his stuff out?

So back to the question above, Jimmy.   How should the facility handle defaults? 

My guess is there is a lot of construction people - builders, roofers, fencing.....

Then security related stuff.

Payment, online or kiosk.

Hmmmm.....lighting?   Those motion sensor ones?

One of those has to be in the top two......?

I shouldn't make fun.  Grabbed a burger with this girl last week and it came to $26 with bottles of cherry coke and tip. No fries. No sides. Just a burger.   But they were covered in Gruyere cheese and truffle oil sautéed mushrooms.  Pretty darn good.

Over at the Paris they have a burger that costs $777.  Kobe beef and Maine lobster topped with caramelized onions, imported Brie, crispy prosciutto, and aged balsamic vinegar served with a bottle of Dom Pérignon Rosé Champagne.

Buffets are to spendy.  I'm a grazer, eat 6 times a day but small meals, so buffets are a waste on me.

I hit....
Gambler's Special  At Mr. Lucky's 24/7 in the Hard Rock Hotel. Steak, three grilled shrimp, a choice of potato or broccoli and a salad. It's not on the menu -- you'll have to ask your server -- and is available around the clock.  They ask for a players club card but usually don't hassle you much if you don't have it.   I heard they now require you to buy a beverage too.....     $7.77

LaSalsa Cantina for breakfast because its $3.95.  Not the best food but cheap.

And Secrete Pizza in the Cosmopolitan. Up escalators to third floor, all the way down the hall.
It's not so secrete these days but great pizza by the slice.  It's also where a lot of "friendly ladies" conduct business so don't think your a stud when all the ladies are hitting on you.   

Then there is Coronado Cafe at a South Point.  Its alllll the way down Dean Martin Dr.  so you need a car.
Mid-night to 6am, $2.95 breakfast.  Like Denny's grand slam style.

Most of the time I just buy the cheap food at the cafés after midnight and throw it in the mini-fridge for the next day.   At the Imperial (I think, my memory was a bit.....let's say "cloudy") we got a whole pepperoni pizza for $4.95 and huge sandwich's with chips were $2.95. Fried chicken, 2-piece, with a waffle was $1.99.

I also just have limo (cheaper than cab) swing by Von's and load up on food for the room.



And I've found that if you want cheap eats, look for the sports book.  They tend to put a cafe next to it with cheap food.   Guess they don't want the gamblers wondering off in search of food.....
