General Storage Auction Talk / Re: small town or big cities?
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:57:03 PM »
ok if your a rancher or farmer then how much land do you have ? lets talk "barns". so why the hell would they need a storage shed HAHAHAHA.. its mostly those that work at the dairy queen or live on welfair, run a cash register at a store some farm labor perhaps. but bottom line is in my parts anyhow small towns do not have good stuff. I have to goto the bigger city's. now if mr banker dies perhaps if he wrapped and stored it corectly odds of 1 in 100.

I wasnt saying that you will find good stuff because of the Ranchers / Farmers. I was saying for the most part they are the ones with the money, and you can be sure you will see some of those in small town storage auctions. No matter where you go, the nature of the beast is the same. You will not know for sure what you have in a lkr (except for what you see at the door) and there is always someone with more money to just throw away at a locker than you will have.

Yes you can have lower crowds in a smaller town, but the people there will more than likely be highly territorial, and they would have more money to just throw at the wind.

well i just got done writing 4 counties of storage units which is about give or take 80 facilities with phone numbers and addresses. i still have 2 or 3 counties left to do. i think it will make it easier to call them in the long run and this way i can cross off which facilities are not good and which ones i wont go back to. just got about 100+ more facilities left to write out. tomorrow is going to be a long day calling these places

Good luck, this is a long and daunting task for most, however I think this is the best approach.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Silent auction
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:49:48 PM »
This is how my first silent/sealed bid auction went down. About 15 minutes prior, the facility manager gave everyone (about 12 buyers) about 12 sheets of papers with the unit #s, as well as your point of contact. At auction time, each one of us got into 2 15-passenger vans and then headed out onto the lot, which had both indoor and outdoor units. The manager's staff showed each of the units, which we were only able to see at the door without touching. Of course, with each unit came a bid, if you wanted to. One outside unit even had bidding on a car!

After showing the 12th, all of the buyers headed back to the facility headquarters, where with whatever we bidded on, placed within a manilla envelope that we had to seal. The manager, as well as her staff, said that if we won, she would call us.

Sure enough, about 15 minutes later, I received the call on the unit that I bid on. When I returned to the facility, the manager still had 12 stacks of papers with everyone's bid on it. Out of curiousity, I asked on how many people bid on my unit, and she just counted the sheets of papers and said "3" besides yourself, without divulging who bid on it and what.

Kinda thought it was a neat and fair process, being my first time at a silent/sealed bid.  ;D

Thats how it usually goes at a silent auction. With one exception, at least around here, at each locker they look at all the bids and decide who won and how much they bidded on it. Other than that no info is released.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: how to build up a clientel
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:47:36 PM »
You can either look ahead in CL wanted ads for things that people are collecting. Or you can wait till you get a certain piece (since you never really know what you will find) then network to find a collector, or at the very least a dealer who deals with what ever it is that you have.

Damn thats foul.

I never really had an interest in coin collectin befor and still am not going to become an avid coin collector but through sorting coppers you come across wheat pennies, indian heads, and even steel and bronze pennies as well as error coins.

These can be worth money and it is interesting comming across them as well.

If anyone is at all interested in this subject there's plenty of youtube videos and some interseting sites like realcent and coinflation.

I tend to come across large jars of change in one out of every 3 or 4 units so always sorting those for copper and silver

Im not much of a collector of currency. Although after starting in the auction business I have started sorting through the change and bills. Mostly I have foreign currency. Lots of canadian and mexican coins. Have a few coins from Germany and one or two from spain. Also have two 50 Reichmark bills from the WWII era. Got a small assortment of US coins dating as far back as 1893. And to add to the collection I have a one dollar silver note from 1957. As well as a 5 pesos bill from Chichuahua Mexico circulated in 1915.

Sadly none of these are worth very much at the present time. Hoping that all of these will be worth some good change once I pass it down to my kids or their kids.

I agree you can't stereotype facilities or you'll miss out on great auctions but my personal experience is that small towns tend to have less crowds and prices are generally cheaper.

My personal reason however for liking small town auctions is they are often non chain facilities and do less advertising about auctions, also don't hire auctioneers just have the manager run the auction.

I also tend to find more older stuff vs household crap. I also tend to find more toys like project cars, motorcycles, construction equipment, etc which is stuff I like.

This can be very true, but watch out, especially now, alot of small towns people can afford to be a long way from major cities cause they got lots of money, usually from Ranching, at least thats how it is over here.

I heard stories that Arizona is going to be reliving the dust bowl.

If that is the case it will spread to other states eventually. Just from the dirt being picked up in Arizona.

That is how it happened with the dustbowl during the mid 20th century. Dust from the midwest clouded alot of the East Coast including NYC.

I only knew about all of that cause I use to live in Aransas Pass, which is between Rockport, Corpus Christi, and Portland. Never went to any auctions down there myself. Worked on the Island as a cook at the Beach Lodge in Port Aransas. Should go check that place out too for good eats.

ok so strip it then sand and refinish?

Thats what I would do, unless its a piece that is 60 years of age or older. Then I would sell it as is.

What's it Worth?? / Re: What is it (3)?

There is one other think you could check, which is highly doubtable, is for a chemist set. Holding only several test tubes and a small flask.

Well now that I know the copper prices are going up I may start doing that. Wondering however how this will apply to pennies. Giving that most people look at pennies (regardless of pure copper or not) as worthless trash. Giving out $2.00 in pennies and expecting $8 or what ever it currently is for copper prices is hard to stomach. lol. Just my opinion, but who knows the copper pennies may be the next gold mine. :)

   Hi Jross
I am just looking for warmer weather and No excessive snow , as My old body hurts more every winter .                                                                                   When We got back from our cross country trip in Feb. , Our cars were under 4 Ft. + of snow . ( I called My parents and had the crew that plow there driveway    shovel out  our car for $ 75.00 ) Nothing like driving 12 hrs. then having to shovel over 4 ft. of snow at 10:00 Pm.
  Bandit
Ps.
Researching around the Southern Texas area  , Brownsville , San Benito , Rockport ,

Well I cant personally speak on Brownsville and San Benito. But Rockport is a nice place to live. Although it is a little pricey due to be so close to the Ocean and it being another spot for tourist. (Corpus Christi being only a 30 min drive.) And it being so close to a Tourist town and mainly a failing fishing industry town, pay is not that well. Jobs are scarce, most people make their money during the summer time.

Now to the grits and gravy. According to some people I know that are seasoned vets, they went down to that area for Storage Auctions a few times. People way over pay on the lkrs there. This was even before the shows started. They all got money to basically just throw away, and the way the was telling me how it is. The are very territorial, got lots of money, willing to take all the risk, and are all pretty much treasure hunters. So if you do go there, good luck, and check out the fishing over at Goose Island.
