The Lounge / Re: Most Watched TV Shows and Networks

I don't understand the popularity of duck dynasty. I watched it for 3 minutes and had to change the channel.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Storage doors that won't open.

I've been to plenty where they partially open, some only up to the knees. Most of the partial opens are to about half way or so, I'd say. I've never seen one not be offered up for sale. I love picking up these units because they go ultra cheap! They are typically very poorly packed and have some damaged stuff, but the cost of the investment is so low, you can always make money!

eBay / Re: Why don't buyers leave feedback?!
« on: August 26, 2013, 07:24:11 AM »
I've noticed that buyers are very late to the party regarding feedback. Feedback is so much more important to the seller than to the buyer. I don't give feedback, until I get feedback. In my package, I also write a thank you note and ask to leave a positive feedback. It doesn't work as of yet, but hopefully it'll all start to catch up!

Further more if letting them hold $100 of your cash for a day or two while you clean out the unit is going to break you, you probably have no business buying the unit in the first place.

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly! Like MM said previously, deposits thin out the herd because most newbies don't expect a cleaning deposit (because it's not on TV). I know when I first came back to the auction biz, I was expecting a little box to pop up to my lower left with prices and a "cha ching" sound.

Stores / Re: How Do You Advertise?

They'll allow signage, the township just wants their pockets greased. If I wanted to put a sandwich board out by the road, it would cost me $25 to apply for a temporary sign, and I would be able to keep it out there for a whole week!

I had actually started the thread to start a conversation about alternative advertising options among us who choose to participate. Things like flyer distribution, press releases, sign flippers, etc. I didn't mean to complain about Apex's strict sign laws.

Are you talking about the ad choices ads or the ads in the body of the forum? The ad choices ads are basically for sites that I've visited recently. In the body of the forums, I've only noticed onlinestorageauctions.com.

That's a good idea.. However, our township is very strict on the kinds of signs used. The one you show is prohibited. The tattoo shop in the plaza bought a flag to put in the ground by the road. The township confiscated it. The martial arts school next door to me put yard signs in the ground right in front of the plaza. The township made him remove them. It's very tough to get any kind of signage passed.

Stores / How Do You Advertise?
« on: August 21, 2013, 11:51:21 AM »
I'll be honest. Opening and maintaining a store seems to be easier these days IF you're internet savvy. Craigslist provides a lot of local advertising for free for my store. I also buy cheap ads on local university message boards, not more than $10 per ad. That gets me 100,000 views.

However, the typical ways a store buys visual advertising (signage, flags, etc.) is very difficult in my little town of Apex, NC. My plaza has no roadside marquee, no directory inside the plaza, nothing to welcome the plaza guests to our plaza. Therefore, I have no opportunity to grab over 80,000 cars that pass by the plaza daily.

So, let's throw some ideas together and help each other out! How do you advertise for your store, warehouse, retail space, specific items?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #8.....August, 2013

Bought a locker last week. The doors opened up and many walked away. There was a bedroom set in there. Queen sized. One of the regulars stuck around with me and another bidder. I opened the bidding at $50. When it went over $200, Tom says to me, "What are you doing? There's nothing but crap in there." I keep up the bidding and win the locker at $325. The bedroom set is an Ashley Furniture set, made in 2012, still selling today. Retails for $2k. I sold it for $1k over the weekend. Also got a bunch of clothes that were name brand and in good shape. The rest was tossed.

After I won the locker, Tom and I went into to inspect. It didn't take him long to give me an "atta boy". I don't understand why I was the only one to notice the furniture, but I'm glad I did!

Storage Facilities / Re: Storage facility policies

I bought from one facility that forced us to pay a deposit per unit. I bought 4 that day. I had to lay out a $400 deposit. I got it all back and they were real easy to work with, but geez.. $100 is enough incentive to get the lockers cleaned out.

Some of you may know this story.. I bought a rented space that was used for band rehearsal. Worst locker I had ever bought. I could have saved the framing and sold it, but didn't have the space or a contact for the materials. I pulled an amp with no head but decent speakers, some small PA speakers and some space heaters and an AC unit, but that's about it. Paid $50, made $150. Spent a week cleaning it out.. blah..

Rooms I look for has signs of either vintage collectible type stuff or kid stuff. Kid stuff goes fast on Craigslist and vintage collectibles look cool in my storefront window!

That is a bit ridiculous to charge $100 per day for every day the locker isn't cleaned out. I'm sure the facility got burned, but that's a bit outrageous. Perhaps you could pull her aside and offer to clean up whatever someone leaves behind. It may not be the best stuff, but it's free inventory..

Stores / Re: Do you offer returns?
« on: August 19, 2013, 09:34:19 PM »
I do test as much as I can with what I've got. The next locker with a tv, I'm gonna keep it just to test my electronics. But even if I get a positive test, I'm thinking of keeping the 1 week return as a good faith gesture to my customers. I never would have believed that a return policy could be a selling tool!

Garage Sales / Re: Is everything for sale?
« on: August 19, 2013, 07:30:10 PM »
I went to a yard sale shortly before my store opened. They didn't have anything interesting to me but when I went into the garage to look at the boxes laid out on the floor, I noticed a shelving system typically used in a closet. It was holding some outside toys, sporting goods type stuff. I bought them for $10 ea. They now hold my jeans.. the ones that are for sale, that is..

After all, having a return policy at all builds confidence in the buyer and creates good will.

My sentiments exactly! From what I've seen, the customer is more likely to do business with you, and come back, if you offer some kind of return policy. Most of my items are for $10-$50 in the electronics/plug in field. So if someone wants to return, it's not a big deal to refund. Plus they're coming back into the store again, hopefully I would have restocked with new items!

But even something as nominal as 1 week cash refund or store credit is enough to keep the customer happy. One thing that I have done is gone and marked all the items with a white out squiggle line somewhere inconspicuous so that if they attempt to purchase something to replace their broken one, I have something on the product to signify that it's mine.
