Stores / Do you offer returns?
« on: August 19, 2013, 02:44:28 PM »
I know that as a used goods dealer, it's unusual to offer returns. Today I had a DVD player returned because it wouldn't read DVDs. I haven't bought a unit with a working TV since I opened up the shop a month ago, so I can't test the products for operability. If the light comes on, and the tray spits out, it goes on the floor. Because of this, I offer a 1 week return policy on anything that plugs in, even lamps and microwaves, etc. It seems to be a big hit with my customers who are more likely to purchase the item plus others.

Anyone else have a return policy? What are the terms?

If this was already discussed, I apologize. I did a search and got a lot of "tax return" threads.

I bought 4 lockers online a couple of months ago and as a whole I made some money, but if I broke down the sales from each locker bought on that day, I did really good one 1 and either lost or broke even (best case scenario) on the other 3. However, I did buy all 4 lockers for under $600. One of the lockers was virtually a total loss, roaches everywhere. We saved the items that roaches couldn't get into (not many) and chucked the rest out. While I'm soured on online auctions at the moment, I can't help but keep my eye out for any opportunity to buy!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Does heavy merchandise turn you off?
« on: August 16, 2013, 07:21:30 PM »
The way I see it is, the heavier the object the smaller your potential sales market is. Unless I have someone in the field looking for the item that's for sale, I'm staying away. Around here, guys stay away from units because of items like TVs or an abundance of furniture, nevermind the commercial stuff.

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Report....August, 2013
« on: August 16, 2013, 07:16:22 PM »
Craigslist for me has been cold the last 2 weeks. Granted, I do have a lot of collectible type items which do not sell well on Craigslist in my area. I do have a very nice Ashley Furniture bedroom set which hasn't garnered much interest as well as a complete low end dining set, but it's in great shape. No interest on that either. It's driving me nuts how slow Craigslist has been for me this month.

I love vintage collectible stuff. If the door rolls up, and there's a Lionel train set, or a vintage guitar, or a vintage brand named box even, I'm all over it!

Before being active on this forum, I stalked this and other forums online. I chose to participate here because it's the only one that isn't a "measuring contest". The others seem to be filled with these hot shot guys just looking to show off what they found. But I was looking to learn and share experiences. Not to "pull out" my most prized finds and gloat about it.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Found this at a yard sale today..

Yeah, I don't think it's related to Nazi Germany. It's widely used today in Indian culture as a symbol of luck and prosperity. Probably related to that. I guess it'll go in the trash..

Yeah, I noticed that it was backwards. I'm thinking it's a homemade piece and they did a Charles Manson..

What's it Worth?? / Found this at a yard sale today..
« on: August 09, 2013, 04:51:11 PM »
So today I buy a lot of stuff from a guy early on at a yard sale. I told him that I just opened my shop around the corner, and he says "take everything on the front tables for $20! Stock your shelves!" so I did. Most stuff is decent crystal, found some unique items like a 1920's decanter turned into a lamp. Pretty cool..

As I'm digging through the totes, I find this..

Swastikas are woven into the cloth. On the opposite site, blue swastikas all the way across the top just like this side, with a small 443 patch in the corner.

I'm hoping it's related to the 1936 Olympics somehow..

Any ideas?

What's it Worth?? / Re: Anybody good with Chinese pottery?

No makers mark. I know there's chips. In museums, they have just fragments of Chinese pottery pre-1910. I tend to be very careful when it comes to this stuff.. because you just never know! $4 it is!

Is there a way to track which comment earned us karma?

Where was the museum? I used to live near Tarpon Springs, FL. Their major export is sponges. I used to see these helmets everywhere!

I found this platter dish in a unit which had a ton of glass from the 20's to the 50's. I'm thinking it's a reproduction, but I just wanted to get some opinions before I mark it $4...

I'll go to a 1 unit auction if it's close to home. If I have to drive more than 10 miles, forget it. I used to go to them all, my thinking was the lower the number of units available, the less the crowd will be. Not the case.. So now the less number of units, the closer it has to be to my home or business.
