Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #12...December, 2012
« on: December 06, 2012, 09:51:15 AM »
Hey! Mice/Rats don't eat gold bars, expensive rifles, or Coca-Cola collectibles, so you should'nt have to lower your biddng at all!  ;)

Yep, thats what I do! Haven't found any hunting rifles yet though  ???

God I hope newbies don't think they should bid that high for units around here! Newbs have been losing their shirts around here bidding only half that high on units!

Then again, you got to have at least two idiots bidding for units to go that high!  :D

Reminds me of early 2011 when we were bidding on a unit and it was going nice and easy $100, $200, $300; then a newbie yells out $2,000!!!  :-[  Needless to say, that newb is no longer a regular storage unit auction buyer.  ::)

Just wanted to try some of the new emoticons  >:(

Suggestion Center / Re: New Category Suggestions

I'm thinking that the uptick in trends is do more to people wanting to find out about the new seasons of the TV shows and not necessarily about an increase in the business in general.

Somehow I think the interest in the TV shows is going to translate into an increase in auction attendence. Still too many people losing thier jobs and working low paying jobs who never gave this business a "shot" yet, so the new TV seasons may incourage them to do it.

Couple that with Christmas money & time off & tax rebate check season just around the corner, we all may have to deal with another wave of newbies. Good thing is I don't see how this wave could be worse then the Spring 2011 wave and the Spring 2012 wave.

I'm going out on a limb and predicting that if we can get through the tax season, then we will have smooth sailing again by June 2013 and the auction scene should look a lot more like it did in 2009. Unless there are huge numbers of layoffs of middle class and upper middle class workers this winter/spring.

The Lounge / Re: End Of The Mayan Calendar

All the "news" coverage about December 21 has seemed to have died out. I guess it was a fun story a year or two ago. Now nothing. Wonder if that means something?  :-\

486
Yes, generally it's newbs/novices with money to burn and they run the prices up. Probably one of, if not only time of the year they will buy a unit, so it's a fun little adventure for them.

How do you prepare for something you don't know about? An end of one "world" is the beginning of another "world". Sounds like your prepping is based on trying to hold on to the ending "world", instead of accepting the new "world".

I would rather be open to the new beginning, then cling to what is left of the dying "world".

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Have you ever MIS-DIRECTED a NEWBIE ?
« on: December 02, 2012, 05:46:13 PM »
Wouldn't it be bad form NOT to misdirect a newbie?  ;)

493
If you have the time and your time would not be better spent doing something else then sure, go to all the auctions you can.

It really depends on the behavior of the crowd, who is bidding, what the unit looks like, etc. I use both methods depending on the circumstances and what my strategy is for the day or for that particle unit.

I don't think one technique is necessarily always better then the other.

I can say that coming in at the end when everyone thinks the bidding is done can be diabolically fun.  ;D

I dress pretty grungy. The regulars know I have money to drop, so i'm not fooling them, but somehow showing up to an auction in Polos, turtle neck sweater & docksiders screams "run that guy up".

I went to an auction recently attended by a group of preppy newbies, don't know if they knew each other or if it was just a coincidence. Anyway, I was dressed pretty grunge and started bidding high on a unit and I could hear murmurs and laughter and gossip behind me. I get the feeling they were thinking "God, that guy is spending his entire welfare check on one unit!" I don't mind if people think that about me.  ;)

I never seen anyone who came to an auction dressed in high fashion or business attire when a unit for cheap, so what does that tell you.
