New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Warehouse not taking bids
« on: February 14, 2011, 08:23:33 PM »
I knew I saw this thread somewhere!  Last night, my brother who lives in Arkansas called me.  He was talking about an auction that was listed in the paper under legal notices.  He went there to find out what time to show up, and they told him that they sell all their units to one guy.  He buys them all and they don't do any auctions.

I don't know about Arkansas, but out in WA, if the facility values the contents of the locker at less than $300, than legally they can just dispose of the contents after all the proper paperwork has been sent and the proper amount of time has passed.  Fortunately, most facilities have the auction!

I don't know how many times in the last two months that I've overheard noobies saying that the auctions are "rigged" or some other such BS.  They pay a lot of money for a locker, and it's full of crap, and then it's somebody else's fault.  The only thing I'm more tired of hearing (at every damn auction!) is "Yeepp" done in Dave's tone of voice!

Bigger is Better!  Well, sometimes.  I like the big lockers.  Say you can buy a 5 x 10 for $400, or for that same $400 you can get a 10 x 30.  All things being equal, and based on what you can actually see in the unit that makes you willing to pay the $400 in the first place, the chances of there being something exciting hidden in the bigger unit is usually greater.  Yes, they can be a lot of work, but they can have great rewards too.  Ideally, I'd only be buying 3 x 5 units and they'd be full of gold and easy to clean out and there would never be any garbage, but remember, with risks come rewards!  Just my opinion, and not everybody has the means or the storage to clean out the larger units.

"There is a backache in your future"!  LOL

to somebody and it doesn't work?  Such as, you buy a unit and it has a TV in it, and you sell it but then it ends up not working.  Or, you get a washer and dryer and don't get a chance to test it out, and once you've sold it, the dryer ends up being broken.  I know what I do, I'm just wanting to hear some of your experiences and comments.  I try to test everything before, but sometimes I get it sold before I actually had a chance to check it out.

How about:

"Congratulations, you paid too much".

"Today, you will go on a trip......to the dump"

"Sometimes when you win, you lose".

"Don't bother looking, those parts aren't in there".

"There are multiple toilet plungers in your future".

Buyer "A" must have been kicking himself in the ass for getting rid of something without realizing the true value!

So who else is now thinking about running down to Vegas to participate in this companies big auction?  I'm thinking it might be fun!  I could tow down my trailer, go to the auctions and take all the good stuff and load it in the trailer and give away or dump everything else!  Might be fun, and if I made some money, it would be even better!

They can do that, but this guy doesn't do any reserves.  If it goes to auction, it's going to sell!  He's got an old time auction house and it's a blast to go to his auctions.  He's always joking around during the auctions and keeps things moving along pretty fast so things don't get boring.  He'll even call out bidders numbers during the auction and you can win things like free dinners to local restaurants.

Other Forms of Selling / Dropped Some Stuff Off at the Auction House Today.
« on: February 09, 2011, 10:23:05 PM »
I took a couple of things up to a local auction house today.  I had a few things that I figured I would take a gamble on and hope they sell for a decent amount of money.

Anyway, while I'm there, a lady calls the auction guy and she had some "art" that she thought was worth some big bucks.  Wanted to know if she could bring it in and run it through his auction, and then if it didn't sell for enough, she would just take it back!

I'm thinking there is a chance that somebody doesn't quite have a clue about how an auction works!   ???

A little far out there that is for sure.  I'd buy all the mostly empty units if I knew they were all had some small item(s) worth 3k hiding in the back.  Save on my back and dump bills!
