At one location, the highest number I've personally seen is in the 20's. I saw one in Goldsboro (about an 1.5 hours away) advertising 120 lockers. On a caravan I'll see anywhere from 20-40 lockers. Just not a huge number of lockers up for auction at any given time..

What's it Worth?? / Re: Vintage Bottles
« on: August 07, 2013, 03:59:01 PM »
Glass is tough. I got a ton of glassware in my last locker too. Some dating back to 1925. I have a friend who is very good with recognizing glass who I use to help me price out stuff. He typically talks about the origins of the bottles, the story behind them, etc. when I bring bottles to him. If a bottle is related to the medical field, or beverage industry (of course) it brings more. Mason jars and such not as much. Apparently glassware and bottles that originate in Indiana are more desirable to collectors than others. Any markings or anything on them?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: First Trip Out Today

One of my biggest mistakes breaking into the business was that I was looking for things that were interesting to me. Granted, we all want to sell the unique items, or something that we're highly knowledgeable on, but the thing I focus on now is, how much money can I make off this stuff? I put a number on each unit. If I think I can make $400, my top number is $200.

I no longer look at the items and fall in love. It's all just a bunch of stuff with dollar signs.

I can spot an antique, but if it hasn't been featured on Pawn Stars or American Pickers, I wouldn't have any clue as to it's value.

That's what google is for!

That's why there's always shennanigans being played with these units at some facilities. Typically, the corporate chains will play by the rules, because their name in the press for breaking lien laws is much more harmful than the lawsuit settlement. For the privately owned facilities, there really is no punishment for breaking the law. The court of public opinion only lies in their hometown.. and soon enough, people will forget.

Bought a unit on Thursday. Had a dining room set perfect for college kids. 4 chairs and a bench. Should fetch $250 and be a quick sell with the kids coming back to campuses for the Fall. Other than that, I got some vintage glass. Lots of Pyrex, a nice 1950s  pitcher/vase, 1970s Polaroid camera with the rainbow stripe, 1970s Coke glasses, 1970s Schlitz goblet, nothing super high value.. But I should make about $500 when it's all said and done. Paid $160 for the unit. Lots of shelf filling.. had to buy 2 more bookcases and a media tower for DVDs to accommodate the new inventory.

Book stores may buy more than you'd think. Of course they want the more popular authors, but they should also look at thing like historical context. A book written by a confederate general will be more obscure than the popular authors of the time, but to a rare book store, it's a good buy to flip through their sales channels.

Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: The weirdest place you found money?
« on: August 04, 2013, 08:04:53 AM »
It's like hitting the lottery when you find that much money in an unexpected place like towels and blankets. I asked this question of one of the regulars at the auction this week.. He pulled an old upholstered chair from a locker that was suitable for the trash. He flipped it over to find the manufacturer and saw a repaired rip just big enough for a hand to fit in perfectly in the middle of the seat bottom. He said that it just appeared strange because it didn't look like the rip was an accident. The opened that spot and pulled out $2000 and a diamond tennis bracelet.

He was a contractor in NY. He said that he used to find all sorts of stuff in the walls and under floorboards of homes he was repairing.. The weird things we do with money..

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Selling at Auction Barn

There are very few auction houses here, and what they look for is the best stuff to sell.. Wish they had something like a country auction barn around here!

There's gotta be a rare book store down there by you. I'd take them there. Amazon does okay with old books.. I think putting them on craigslist will not yield you the results you're looking for. Rare books are all about condition. I think a book store that can inspect each book, and they're knowledgeable about what exactly their looking at is going to be the best and easiest way to unload them.

I've never had luck selling that stuff..

What about calling someone to come and pick it up and splitting the profit with them. Half is still better than none.

Not a bad thought.. but I'm short on storage space to horde it until I have enough to entice someone with that deal..

Craigslist / Re: High End Applinaces

I don't mess with appliances. Mainly because I don't have the space to house something that big for any significant amount of time. If I buy a room that has appliances, I price it cheap and hope to flip before I move it.. Hence I don't buy many units with appliances..

I've been finding a lot of stainless recently.. it's too bad I don't own a dump truck to haul it off to the scrap yard, and make a decent buck..
