Yes, Alloro, there are many reasons for doing so.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #10...October, 2013

Went to an auction the other day and .... bad news. This was one of the 4 major auctioneers in my area and he has a following.

About a dozen lockers...I stayed for the first 5 or so. One of the ones I saw looked decent; a 10 x 10 with a 32" tv up front waiting for some sucker to get drawn in (most don't work; why they're save I don't know).  Anyway, I would have gone maybe $200 to insure some profit but the first words out of the auctioneers mouth..."I have a starting bid of $500, who wants to go $525?"

The crowd went all right...straight down the aisle to the next locker. I think it must have been the lkr owners who bought it but I didn't inquire. Scoffs were heard all around thinking it was a newbie, but no newbie I've seen talks to the auctioneer while coming away from the lkr view...that's why I think it was the lkr owner.

****

A couple of more lockers and I'd had enough...the NEWBIE population here was about thirty and then the regular 6 to 10 regular buyers.  Not a good day to get a bargain and I had other things to do.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Has anyone gotten a SAFE lately ?
« on: October 03, 2013, 06:37:04 PM »
What not a single safe in all the 50 states or around the "Storage Wars" world of Canada ?

What's this business coming to?

*****

I saw a safe at an auction the other day, but I had to leave so didn't get to see what the locker sold for. It was over on its side and looked quite old and heavy....might have some rare air inside !

Will find out in the next couple of weeks what that locker sold for.

or there is a vast lack of comprehension.

Or it wasn't a joke, and if it was a joke it wasn't funny.   Man up...take responsibility for the deafening sound of silence from the audience.

Here are the next 16 candidates for "whale" status here on the forum.

Note the ones in red...doubt they are contenders and some of the others have a steep grade ahead.

In my area there are a good six "whales" who can buy whatever they want. There used to be seven, but I am working on "white shark" status in the picking community....and I due to the nature of picking I don't run into a group of sharks like I run into whales at an auction !  ;D

Storage Facilities / Re: Sealed Bid Auctions
« on: October 02, 2013, 09:13:09 PM »
The facility I was talking about did sealed bid, closed door sales. They expected us to make educated decisions based on a description by the management only.

Now THAT is a rarity ! I've only heard of it once in 10 years and the place was of course privately owned, in the worst section of town and known for its garbage lockers for those brave enough to try.

An educated guess based on what a manager said?  You KNOW how reliable that would be.

Craigslist / Re: September Contest - $50 Gift Card
« on: October 02, 2013, 08:08:49 PM »
Well, you could always change your position and participate in this months contest in "Storage Auctions in the News." Everyone knows you own that section. It's a quick $50 to the retailer of your choice. Although, I don't think TheSpyStore.com offers gift cards.   ;D

When Alloro said I owned the SA in the News section he wasn't offering it as a compliment, but that's neither here nor there.  A quick $50 doesn't interest me and the fact is that SA in the News is a much rarer thing now than it was in the past when the TV shows were at their peak.

Nope, I'll leave that money to those who are interested in pursuing it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Letters in lockers

I personally don't look through or read other people's mail.

I mostly read the ones that are sent from a jail/prison inmate to someone at home. They are the most realistic look anyone could have at the privations of being incarcerated. They also say a lot about the person writing them. The responses to those letters are sometimes found in a separate bundle, saved by the former inmate and brought with him/her upon release. Again, an interesting read.

I have also found letters of commendation from various officials and once again it's a look into someone's life. All of these people, criminals or not, had lives before they lost their lockers and whether they were losers or just ordinary people they led lives like the rest of us and documented them in a variety of ways. Hand-written letters are almost a lost art now.

I wish you would explain to me what this topic is about.

Letters in lockers? Like personal letters, love letters, letters from baby's daddy who got locked up, etc?

Ah, our fearless leader figured it out ! (and he gave three examples); now if someone other that I, Travis and Alloro could actually contribute the gory details of any of those (or other) types, we might be able to move along.  ;D

Give them another six months to a year and I'm sure they will.
