General Storage Auction Talk / Re: refinishing furniture
« on: November 04, 2011, 10:16:42 AM »
To expand on this, people who do it regularly, could you give a 'step by step' proccess? I have a cheap kitchen table right now, that if in good condition, could possibly fetch 40 or 50 bucks. It has what looks like cat scratches all over it, and im wondering if my only option is to sand/gloss/re-paint, or if I could just use spray paint to cover it up and have it look decent enough to sell.

I have no experience refinishing furniture, so any advice would be helpful. To bigbizz I'm sure as well.
Sounds like a lot of work to make 40 to 50 bucks.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Storage Auction TV Show...

I think it makes perfect sense. I also think the T.V. shows are bringing more people to the auctions. In that case the lockers are sold way to expensive to make any real money. It definately has downfalls!!!
Really? Havent noticed that! Anyone elese ???

Do you think they're motivating people to pay off their storage unit rent?

Before the shows ever aired, I suspect many people didn't believe 'their' unit would really ever go up for auction. Now that the shows are out and people see first hand that it happens, they now pay up and of course that cuts down on the number of units being auctioned off. Thoughts?
No I think it makes people loose there units. Or since people over pay a great way for renter to make money

That is why I bought a unit Sat. it looked like a real Money Maker.  Brand new in the packaging stuff sells!

They are new bathroom cabinets made by Brookhaven.  I checked on the web and these things are very high quality.  I have several people that are interested.  I have a full time job and am doing this to see how much it can supplement my income for retirement.  Had a very good locker last month and this looks to be about the same.  Retirement may be early next year ;D
There ya go! Maybe storage wars will do an eposide for ya on that.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Boycott "Buyer's Premium"
« on: November 03, 2011, 10:16:35 AM »
Hi all,

I'm writing to encourage everyone to boycott auctions that add an additional 10% "buyer's premium" onto your fees, on top of the 10% sales tax you already pay, depending on your area!  In California, that's 20% OVER your bid!
When you bid over $1000, that becomes extremely expensive.  A $1000 bid will cost you $1200 total.   American Auctioneers is doing this now.  Be sure to ask before you go to an auction.  If they do that, please boycott them, and encourage all the other bidders you know to boycott them.   They already make a very good commission from the vendor, so they are double-charging for the same job, with no real service to you.

Enough is enough.

Other auctioneers are doing this as well, but I don't have a list to share.  I'm new here, so I'm sure the members are far more familiar with this than I am.  Apparently in England they are getting even more gouged than we are.  Here is a link to an article on this price gouging:
ganews.co.uk/premium.html

I know this is a fulltime business for many of you, but if there is a way to boycott these Auctioneers that have gotten out of control (sound familiar?)  please do so.
Please also call American Auctioneers at 800 838 7653, and other houses that do this and let them know what you think of their 10% additional "buyer's premium", when they are already making a good commission from the storage facility.

Thanks.
Why not make it 20% people love to over bid! Maybe this will stop over bidding? Then maybe we can start getting great lockers at 150-350 again. lol yeah good luck with that happening.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: My own website
« on: November 02, 2011, 02:45:03 PM »
About 5 years ago I started my own webiste (through Yahoo) and list all of the stuff I have around the house I no longer want.  Mostly craft related things, but I have branched out and started putting other things a few years ago.  When I started working full time outside of the house (I was a work at homeMom for 7 years) in August 2009, I stopped "working" the website.  When I won my first locker in February, I re-vamped the website and re-joined a number of the Yahoo groups I had belonged to.  While it is nothing compaired to E-Bay or any of the other listing services, the cost of the website is $12.95 per month.  I have a TON of web space and pages and I can update things quickly.  I sold $100 worth of fabric last week, so that pretty much paid for the fees for the next 6 months even if nothing else sells.

Granted, I have to work the Yahoo groups and figure out the "rules" of when to post what and how for each one, but it has been pretty successful.  My plan is to post things on the website for 2-3 months and if between it and taking advantage of E-Bay freebies, if it doesen't sell and I can't find a place to sell it locally in a resale shop, I will donate it to a couple of the local thrift shops (NOT Goodwill or Salvation Army) and help them make some $$$.

Now, don't y'all come back to me and make a comment of this being a self serving post...If you are interested in the website addy, PM me.

(DESCLAIMER: OF COURSE I WILL NOT LET MY COMPETITORS GET A REALLY NICE UNIT FOR CHEAP, AND IF I SEE A UNIT THAT APPEARS TO BE A REAL MONEY MAKER I WILL NOT PASS IT UP  )

and way over pays each time but thats not the point. The point is they refuse to buy a trailer and rent a uhaul each time and there house is full way over full of stuff. The idea is sell what you have then buy more and at 100 bucks each time you rent a uhaul plus gas and mileage its cheaper to buy a trailer. I guess when your addicted to what they call a hobby you dont care what you spend.
