General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Liquidity
« on: May 03, 2013, 02:59:25 PM »
I like my lockers like I like my women......small, cheap and easy to get rid off!    :D

Seriously, I like small units.   Minimum on large furniture, end tables and chairs are cool.   Lots of smalls.   Easy to clean out.  Minimum of storage needed.

If I was trying to support myself on reselling alone I might change tactics but this is just filler.....tho, it has gotten me thru some rough patches.

Doesn't really help on purchase price.  Good 3x3 or 4x5 units go for as much as a fully packed, nothing showing, large unit a lot of times.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #5...May, 2013

Right there with ya!

Though there was a huge run on all my favorite locations last week so thinking May might suck.

But they are back to holding auctions every month.   Might only be 1-3 lockers but a year ago it was 3-6 lockers every 3-4 months.

Prices are still sky high.

Craigslist / Accents....
« on: April 28, 2013, 11:16:17 AM »
To start with, no racism here.  The people I've met have been awesome, great to deal with.....

But I've had a run the past two weeks of people from India, Mexico and Autralia.....and I have NO clue what they are saying!     In person its been fine but over the phone?   I don't know what I'm agreeing to....

Just got off the phone with a guy.   I agreed to "We meet at six, yes?"  or "We meet for sex, yes?"......I don't know which.  Either way he agreed to $60 and I need the money so....yeah.    ::)

I don't own a fork lift so I have to consider how I'm going to get it home.

You can "find" those behind stores too.   ;)

have become a vacuum snob. Not making any money on this one but the floor in the store looks great.

I'm in the same boat.   I got that Hoover carpet cleaner for $12.50, retails at $359.   Plan was to clean my carpets then sell.

Thing works so well and is so easy I'm having a hard time listing it.  Want to keep it.

I am a little disgusted at how much dirt came up.....thinking out laying hardwood through out.

Hypothetical question: What if the owner of the online forum you belong to is a snitch for the FBI?

I was a member of a forum years back.  Turned out the owner of the site DID work with the FBI and Homeland security.    Good guy.  We are still friends......or he's still building a case against me.....hmmmm.... ???

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Selling Store Cards on eBay
« on: April 25, 2013, 09:52:17 AM »
Heard about another gift card scam last night.   This comes second hand, I didn't read article, so might have some facts wrong.....

Basically, this guy pays junkies to shoplift cards off rack at store.  These are not activated.
He then activates ONE card.    Then he uses a card reader/writer to duplicate the info on remaining cards.
He built a printing press to change he card number and PIN.  Bam!   Now has x-number of cards all showing a balance.    As long as he sells them all before the first is used......which was easy cause he sold right before Xmas so good chance they were gifts.....won't be used until after Xmas....

Other thing he'd do is scan the stolen cards then go replace them at the store.
He would keep checking the balance untill one was legitimatly activated, dupe the card and use it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: I got suckered.
« on: April 24, 2013, 04:31:52 PM »
I see stuff of mine relisted all the time.   I usually price to sell.  I'm cool if people want to flip it.  I want items to move.  Rather it go fat than make an extra couple bucks.   And higher price brings more haggling.   Some items I sit on.  Mostly smalls.   Big items I just don't have room for.

That said....
I does bother me when they give a sob story on how they need such-n-such.....then flip it.

I had a set of end tables I got on CL 'free'.    I used for a time but just didnt look right.  I found simular for $250 EACH.    For that I wasn't about to relist for free but did price fair, $200 for both.  Got a lot of calls from dealers (or sounded like dealers).   Finally got lady that sounded legit.  She came, story on how she and her husband lost everything in a fire blah, blah, blah......I was fooled.  Sold for $100.  That night they were listed for $400.

But she was messed up.  Had her name in Ad.   So every week I'd search it.  Email and make appt to see whatever she was selling and not show.  Finally the searches came up with no results.  So either she changed the style of her ad or gave up selling on CL......

Don't think of it as buying it back. Think of it as they're paying you a finder's fee for your troubles and your honesty. Ever see a poster for a lost dog with a reward listed? Same thing.

Hmmm......I can't see it as the same thing at all.  Legally or morally.   But I wouldn't take money to return an item to the I rightful owner.  Just me.  Call it karma or whatever.

509
Yeah, a call is free so why not.
Two thoughts:

1) they buy those by the thousands so their cost?  Probably not much.  How many of those thing do you think are out there because they lost a contract and it was more expensive to send out a guy to pick up bin rather than just writting it off and getting a new one?

2) why would they buy back what they own?   Seems people would steal them to sell them back......

But worth a call.  Minimum they might send someone to take them off your hands.  Useless unless you wnt a compost bin or something.  There is a youtube video on how to turn them into a "grow box".   And one guy turns them into dog house's.......lots of repurpose ideas you can do.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Anyone know about violins?
« on: April 22, 2013, 10:50:07 AM »
If they are "student" violins or low end  and your feeling charitable might I suggest contacting your local Junior High music teacher.   School budgets always cuts music programs first.   A lot of kids can't afford an instrument and schools don't have them to lend.  Even if they can't take them I'm sure he/she old point you in he right direction to help a kid out.....and possibly make a 'contact' for selling future items.  ;)
