Picker's Paradise / Garage/Yard Sale Leftovers
« on: October 02, 2013, 01:12:32 PM »
This has been talked about a bit but a fresh look might be in order as fall and winter brings an end to
this kind of sale in some parts of the country.

Do you cruise garage sales at the end of the day to see if you can buy the entire lot?

If it looks like it might sell (for you) around $100, what would you offer for it?

Not sure how this is different than you bidding at a regular auction. Wouldn't you just write down what you would be willing to pay based on what you saw ?

The regulars in my area really liked the sealed bids. We all knew each other and pretty much what each would go for. It was not uncommon to "lose" a locker by just $25 or so. Once I "won" by just a $2 margin.

By in large we did well at that place. Now it's just another auction.

Yep

You and Alloro are TIED for meaningful responses; it's a toss-up as to how meaningful but you are both in good company.  ;D

I've seen many units that seem to contain P.

Huh?

We've probably all gotten them at one time or another...or if you're NEW you will get them !

There are several categories, but I'll let YOU tell us what you have gotten.  ;D

Storage Facilities / Sealed Bid Auctions
« on: October 02, 2013, 09:13:23 AM »
In the last 10 years there was only one place in my area that sold with sealed bids and those were done by the manager and regional manager.

Then the TV shows hit and in the 2nd year of that phenomenon they went to a regular auctioneer and eventually even ended up with the Dotson company.

Does anyone still see sealed bids in their area?

I'll try to have the final count this evening. Thanks to everyone who participated.

He must have nodded off while counting all the posts !  ;D

It's one thing to have a regular partner in a store situation (generally a bad idea IMO) and another to partner up with someone for a single locker buy at any given auction.

Have you ever done this with a buyer you know quite well?

If so, how are the goods and profits distributed?

Who won?

We should know in about 8 hours or so (it's almost 11 pm on the west coast), but that brings up an interesting point. Considering their MIGHT be last minute entries from Hawaii, when DOES Septmeber really end?  AND what about the international dateline?  Could some foreign member from beyond Hawaii still slip in 2 dozen cList entries?  ;D

I haven't counted but my gut tells me it will be HGP.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Anyone seen a fight at an auction?
« on: October 01, 2013, 12:37:45 AM »
If you have seen a fight at an auction who were the participants?

Was it:

1) auctioneer and buyers
2) auctioneer and facility people
3) buyers and buyers
4) whoever is left !

Did you get the partial refund from the facility?

What is the status on the car's operational level?

Has the car sold?

I only recognized one other person who has been around as long as me, three 6-12 month newbies, and the other 40-50 people were BRAND SPANKIN' NEW!

Say it isn't so !

Glad to say the crowds and prices have stabilized in my area but the two problems continue to be what we have mentioned before:

1) locker content quality is down
2) if a good locker comes up the regulars are on it with a fervor !

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How many locks do you bring and why
« on: September 30, 2013, 02:44:58 PM »
As the subject implies, how many locks do you bring to an auction and why do you bring that number of? Also, if it's more than one, did you get sets of keyed alike locks or ones that have their own key (or combination) each?

One on my person and more in the car. That is usually one more than I need !  ;D
