eBay / Re: Anyone Burned on Fee Bay ?
« on: July 20, 2011, 01:17:28 AM »
Well you all heard me say that my grandmother does arts and crafts type stuff on ebay. Well recently she got burned by guess who. Lost the merchandise and the payment for it. Customer started their negative crap for what ever reason, kept the merchandise which he swears he never got, and got his money back. Since then, which I think was only 2 or 3 weeks ago, she cancelled all her other auctions, closed down her account, and now strictly sells only on Bonanza. She is also looking for a different place to auction things off. So if anyone knows a good, cheap, heavy trafficked auction site let me know.

Thanks

More people than you thought of or can think of, for what ever reason rent a storage locker to do their sales out of. Just put that in the your cost pile. Dont rent the storage until after you get your first locker, if all possible, try to sell majority of the stuff (if time is alloted) from the same storage locker you win.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Shipping supplies

I don't how many books you ship.I buy a 200ft roll of butcher paper and bubble wrap from staples.Wrap the book in bubble wrap then the butcher paper.Never had a problem.Smaller books I wrap in bubble wrap then put in a manilla envelope.Buy the tape at any dollar store.

Thats the best way to do it, at least cost effective anyway.

Stores / Re: I don't own a store......
« on: July 19, 2011, 10:04:50 AM »
Does anyone know if those corporate consignment stores purchase items that you bring them in the same manner as thrift stores? There is a chain of consignment stores in my region called "Dirt Cheap". Anyone have success going this route?

I know the major stores, like Goodwill and the like get most of their stuff for free like CopiaVita just mentioned. Now as far as the local thrift stores, or second hand stores rather (there is a difference in the two) They can offer you a consignement which I have yet done, also they can buy it from you, AT THEIR FAIR PRICE, cause they have to make money too. I understood this when I sold some furniture to another auction bidder that had her own store. I sold them a solid wood coffee table (use to be an entertainment center but was broken so I modified it) and a living room table set of two, solid wood, but was not really solid. Anyway I sold all of it to her for $150. Which I was happy with, was only $10 below what I was listing the price for, just had not sold it off after 3 weeks. I went to her store a few days later, and saw she had listed the living room table set for $65, and the coffee table itself for $170. Pretty sure she sold the coffee table rather quickly, since it did look nice after I modified it.

So if loosing that much money would bother you, I would not sell to a store, go for the general public itself. It did not bother me cause I knew she had to make money off of it as well, since she was only buying to resell it. So I got paid and cleared out some inventory.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: all cash sale but what about deposit?
« on: July 19, 2011, 09:54:48 AM »
This is how it is FOR THE MOST PART IN MY AREA: Majority of them ask for a $50 deposit. Some facilities will put a $100 cap for cleaning deposit. What I mean by that is you get one lkr, your cleaning deposit is $50. If you got two it would be $100. three or more (now remember this is at same facility) cleaning deposit will still be $100. Have only been to a few where they did not ask for a cleaning deposit.

This is the first time reading this thread, and thank you to jrossjr79 for your posts. My thought process is very similar to yours. I couldn't do this business without being highly organized. I have a very large garage that I work out of and I separate items by type and how they will be sold. So far I have been able to sell larger items quickly to people i know through work, wife's work, church etc. Need to get another unit, garage looks kinda empty even with 2 large shelving units full of yard sale stuff. Right now I keep anything I can sell, even 25 cent items. I can see how some of you don't fool with that stuff due to the volume you handle. I also salvage good hardwood panels and boards to use later on other broken furniture. Dumping trash costs me nothing in the county I live in so I try to squeeze out every dime I can. Good luck to everyone this week, I've got several auctions this week to get one.

No problem, glad my way of doing things helped you out as well. I myself started to keep furniture hardware to fix furniture that would eventually come up in a later date, but I pretty much ave up on it. I would of end up having alot of hardware, since I absolutely hate trying to resell that particle board furniture. And I barely come across real wood furniture. And when I do, I usually end up having to go out to a local rehab store to go get the hardware I need anyway.

The Lounge / Re: Did Casey Anthony kill her daughter?
« on: July 18, 2011, 09:26:22 PM »
I wonder if someone bought Casey's locker in Orlando while she was in jail for 3 years? I'm sure that the buyer found empty beer bottles, party poppers, chloroform, and duct tape, among other things.

Probable has the evidence that would of convicted her

Here is my story:

I very first got into storage auctions a few years back when I lost my stuff in storage. A friend of mine told me about the whole process and invited me out, I bought like 1 or 2 lockers back then. More of a treasure hunter more than anything, did not take it seriously, so that did not really get anywhere. Few years later I started dumpster diving, searching through CL and Freecycle for free or really cheap stuff and started selling those items for cash. Slowly I went from that to going to flea markets, garage sales, then estate sales. Then it was online auctions, mainly places like propertyroom and the like. Meanwhile I had pretty much forgotten about storage auctions. Till those shows came on, at that point I figured it is a good way to get loads of inventory for pennies on the dollar. So did my research on it, built my database of sales channels and facilities. Ended up subscribing to a place that gave me most of the facilities auction days. Went out to an auction, bidded but did not win on two lockers. Bought Glendon's book, went back out 3 days later after getting the book (took about 2 weeks to get it). And boom, got my first unit, slightly overpaid now I look back at it, but made a profit, could of made more if I got the signed sports memorabilia COA. Since then I have been pretty much hooked.
