Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: First Storage Auction..........
« on: July 17, 2011, 11:46:56 PM »
I actually co-sign to the original post on this topic, asking the question: have the shows distorted the value of lockers? I went to my very first auction yesterday in the deep country at a mini-storage. 50 people or so (as expected) with about 4-5 people bidding. No crazy bids on lockers that contained your everyday auto parts for scrap, out-dated furniture, tote boxes full of VHS tapes, etc. First bid on a trashy 5x5 locker, the auctioneer (the owner) had to coax a bid out of a very silent group of bidders and bystanders. Locker went for $40.

One crazy thing of note: upon arrival ( I was the 6th one to shop up, half hour early), all of the locks had been cut off, and folks were allowed to go inside of each unit and start touching boxes, all sorts of stuff. There was one unit that a lady bought (had a couple of mirrors, wheelchairs, and 2 dressers) BEFORE the auction even started! Kinda weird, but I guess that anything goes at privately-owned facilities during auction time.

That would be one I would stay away from. IMO anyway, take it for what it is worth.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Question on Art (Poster, Ceramic)
« on: July 17, 2011, 12:56:08 PM »
Auction house that has a verified audience for older posters like yours and good art. I try to find local dealers that will give me a fair price. Online for art is to tricky for me to even think about. Ebay has alot of art, and usually only sells for pennies on the dollar if sold at all. DAMN EBAY KILLS the market for almost every kind of collectible.

A note about our local auctioneers that irritate me- they make us form a line and after only 10 or so people see the locker she starts the bidding at 100.00!   its usually up to 225 by the time everyone sees it...  anyone else have any thoughts or ideas--???

Only suggestion I can give you on this, is make sure you are one of those first 10 that get to see it. No matter what it takes, be aggressive to a point where you are still not rude :)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Lots of legal questions.
« on: July 16, 2011, 07:12:15 PM »
On the alcohol, no matter where in the USA you are at you will need to have a Licensee to sell alcohol, no matter what. Either keep it for yourself, or give it as a gift to someone.

On the guns, different from state to state. For the most part you cant sell a gun to anyone other than a licensed gun dealer. However before you do so, you should check to make sure that the gun A: Is not stolen, and B: that it has not been used in a crime. It comes back clean feel free to sell to A LICENSED GUN DEALER, if it comes back unclean, legally you are suppose to turn it over to the authorities, and depending on where you live, they could seize the entire locker you purchased as evidence.

Now for your taxes, if you are running as a business do make sure you get all the business license that are required by your city, county, state and of course federally (IRS). Keep all receipts, from where you purchased, what you sold, gas, storage, anything and everything that you can deduct from the taxes that you will have to pay. On the IRS website they can tell you what you can and what you cant use for tax deduction, and how much of it you can use. Now however, if it is a hobby, where you dont make that much money from it (ask a professional in taxes to check) then you could be ok from not doing any taxes. Only reason I know this is my Grandmother started a business doing arts and craft type sales, after 6 months, the IRS sent her a letter stating that she does not have to file on the business because she was not making alot of money. She was considered a hobbyist. But like I said do check with a tax professional, you can even ask the IRS themselves, they offer free tax advice.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: got a unit for $10.00

Oh, ok. TY Drew. Do people REALLY store trash in their lockers nowadays? Or do you think that its a result of cleaning out the valuables prior to auction and leaving the locker in a trashy condition?

Yes, for what ever reason it may be, whether they are just plain slobs, had to move out of their home quickly, and many other reasons. You will find trash, literary trash, in good majority of your units.

That takes some serious brown nosing, but it does happen.

Kind of figured it does, never know I am getting close to the management where my storage locker is at, :)

Sanity

lol, good luck with that one :)

But to answer the question, I wouldnt mind finding an actual gold bar, or some cash in the neighbor hood of $1,000 or more. However I do not really look for it when I bid on the unit. Keeps me from being discouraged.

I personally do not preview the actually facility. Now if I could preview the locker(s) themselves, then I would be all over it :)

It could be worse. At least they haven't made a reality show about a day spa that provides Brazilians to men. :o

And now that you said it, it will become a show, just watch, lol..................

Only way I do it, is try to size up both the unit and the competition. Try to figure out what the highest bid could be, and add 5 - 10% to that, if the unit is worth that.

Like movieman said, given away some items for free, are a great way to bring to you a potential paying customer.

« on: July 14, 2011, 02:53:22 PM »
For the most part the deposit is cash, I have seen only one facility let you do the deposit on a card.
