Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #9.....September, 2013
« on: September 24, 2013, 10:20:42 PM »
Went to three auctions today. All three had decent crowds...around 12 to 15 with 5 or so of those being regulars.

First place had 7 lockers and all went at reasonable prices. Nothing special and no regular bought any of them.

Second place was interesting. Three months ago one sold there for $800 and was almost immediately reclaimed by the managment as there had been a 3 day error in the advertising it for sale.  Now it was back up for sale.

When I went in the office a big guy was ragging on the manager..."Just want to know what's goin' on. Know Im sayin'?
He signed the sign-in sheet so he could bid on his locker "..if it came to that."  Everyone was wandering in and out and I ended up going to my car for a bit. Lo and behold the guy is right next to me with his driver's door open and rolling what was one BIG joint !

Finally we go in after the auctioneer got there and while most of us went into the main area of the facility. The guy and  his mother (who had showed up) spent about 20 minutes trying to talk their unit out of being sold. The next time I looked in the office two cops were in there...maybe that's because I had let the manager know about the joint.  ;D

ANYWAY...push comes to shove and his locker WILL be sold.  This time the same guy who bought it before had some new competition, BUT he got it again....this time it cost him $1,250 !

The ATTRACTION in the lkr was a huge cement pumping machine and generator combination on wheels. The mother had informed us that the thing did work...this was while her son was outside the facility talking to two cops in their black and white.

Third location...had 3 lkrs...one of the regulars got a pretty good looking 10 x 10 for $335. Should do OK on it.

Overall the crowds and prices were good, but as Cobia has observed here...if it's a beauty of a locker all bets are off.

Before tv shows I would say 4-12 buyers on average. I actually had shown up at auctions and was the only person and they wouldn't sell anything and cancelled the auction.

That's when you go out on the street (or in the neighborhood) and pay two people $10 each to come to an auction with you. Three works.

Storage Wars….the REAL videos !

Both of the videos in this post are only 30 seconds long, so not too much of your lives wasted !

There are many of these videos on YouTube: Here's one that given the price and the product received seems somewhat typical. How he paid that much I don't know; even in my area from the view I think we would have had I can't imagine more than $300 for it.

The next one is entitled "Jackpot find from a storage locker"....what an idiot. Read the comments too, they're funny as well.

Personally (back in the day...before tv shows) I was one of three buyers. It worked out great. I got two of three and they got the other.  ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Is your significant other a hoarder?
« on: September 22, 2013, 12:27:17 PM »
Are thread topics so low we needed a "Are you a hoarder" and "Is your significant other a hoarder"?

Me and my girlfriend enjoy watching the shows on TV about them, and I am friends with a couple on the auction circuit who are hoarders. It was like a privilege being invited into their home. They are clean hoarders, with piles of brand new merchandise/knick knacks piles everywhere as far and high as you could see. It is kind of weird wondering how they could live like that, with literally the only space being walkways from room to room and some couch space.

The answer to your question is ..yes. However it was nice to see that you shared a hoarder story.  The ones on the tv shows are so extreme it is truly sad to watch them and I finally had my fill after half a dozen episode during the first year.

Your "neat" hoarders are "cousins" I would guess of the ones who are truly ill. When you say it's weird wondering how they could live like that I am right there with you....it seems like no way to live.

Definition By Mayo Clinic staff

Hoarding is the excessive collection of items, along with the inability to discard them. Hoarding often creates such cramped living conditions that homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter. Some people also collect animals, keeping dozens or hundreds of pets often in unsanitary conditions.

Hoarding, also called compulsive hoarding and compulsive hoarding syndrome, may be a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). But many people who hoard don't have other OCD-related symptoms.

People who hoard often don't see it as a problem, making treatment challenging. But intensive treatment can help people who hoard understand their compulsions and live safer, more enjoyable lives.

Forget the wife and other family members....are YOU a hoarder?

If you are, is it a matter of just acquiring stuff to resell (and it ends up not getting listed for sale), or do you buy stuff for yourself that just seems to sit around and not get used for its intended purpose?

The mouse from a Lisa computer (Lisa was named after his daughter and was an unsucessful Jobs invention) and other items were found in a time capsule buried in the early 1980s.

You call it cyber stalking, he calls it surveillance.   ;D

And I call it knowledge; you know what they say about knowledge. Well, maybe you don't.  ;D

I see someone got Word of the Day toilet paper......  ;D

We all have to learn new words sometime. In my case I learned the word ephemera when I read it in an ad for an estate sale. Looked it up and made money off that education.

In the case of several who have read and responded to this thread....well, I think they learned about it here.  Always happen to contribute to the cause, whatever the reaction to it.  ;D

536
Actually, we're still trying to figure out what Ephemera is.

Hopefully you haven't thrown any away when cleaning out lockers.  ;D

Let me see.....I think he might have *just* made it as 'on topic'.  It did start with a guy getting a ticket while at an auction.  ???

So lets try to save this.

Anyone ever get a Parking Ticket while in an auction?   Or get towed?

Does your auctions have parking or do you street park?

Who else puts vanillia extract in the egg dip for French toast?

Thank you Alias.

The "dynamic" duo missed the implied aspect of ...."be carefull when parking at an unknown location while attending an auction.  You might get a ticket and that could cut into your profits !"

Meanwhile, they are both back reading Travis' original thread entitled "How old do you think Barry is?". It's an intriguing read (grimace).  ;D

I talked to a guy at the flea market today who told me about one of our cronies who made a big mistake when going to an auction out of town.

The guy apparently parked in a no parking zone (unknowingly) and when he came out from the auction he had a big fat parking ticket.  Don't know what the penalty was but it's always a hundred plus anywhere around here. Heck a parking meter running out is $25 or so.

*****

Reminded me of a story I heard a year or so ago about the guy who ran a stop sign. This was on a city street but turns out it is considered a county street (wtf) and the hiway patrol sits on a corner there and nabs people on a regular basis.

So much for the auction or flea profit if one of these jumps up !

539
Does that count as a military item? Dont think the resale price wll be too high though.

It counts if it was olive drab or camo in color.  If it belonged to or was used by Elvis it has value.  ;D

Got a locker about 4 months ago that contained Level 3 body armor, Kevlar vests, Kevlar helmets, rucksacks, cold weather uniforms, chemical suits, 15 AR-15 clips, military Gerber pocket tools, canteens, shovels, helmet/AR-15 strobe flash lights, a compass, chemical detection kit, and tons of pouches.

What did they sell for and how did you sell them ?
