Vehicles at Storage Auctions / Re: Automobiles at Storage Auctions
« on: July 18, 2013, 02:09:11 PM »
6cylinder sports cars are actually higher in demand these days with new drivers and middle aged. Most want the look and not performance. A 1967 impala went up for auction here a few months ago and it was plated in Oregon. The management helped the buyer to get it registered in NC which he then transferred to his home state, Ohio.

Storage Facilities / Re: Reasons people lose their storage unit
« on: July 16, 2013, 09:42:20 AM »
In the lockers that I've bought this year, an overwhelming number of them have sort of followed a story of divorce. I've found divorce decrees, marriage counseling info, etc. in many units. The next most popular story line that I've pieced together is death. I've had 2 lockers that had lots of letters to and from prisons. A few lockers with no particular rhyme or reason. I assume these people either moved out, moved on, or were unable to pay their bills.

20% is ridiculous. Will they take some inventory as a reward for the lead?

My favorite auctions these days are Storage Auctions Online.  I have seen units go as low as 30 dollars per unit all the way up to 3,000 dollars.  They even have pictures of the contents of the unit.  Just a new tip I found out recently.

Thanks for the tip.  ::)

They're taco trucks that are as authentic as authentic can get too! You will not find English written on the menu, you will not see Pepsi, or Coke, you get Jarritos, that's it! These are my people. They supported me at the flea market. I know they'll do the same at the storefront!

I would imagine that you're only displaying the really nice stuff for your grand opening.

How did you go about determining what went in and what stayed out....or did you leave that to wifey?  ;D

We actually are able to get most of our stuff out. We do have miscellaneous stuff in the back still, but we're trying to figure out how to get some more out. But yes, it is mainly the wife's decision on what goes out where.. I'm glad to relinquish that responsibility to her.

Thank you

I agree, we did make some sales off the traffic the other businesses had coming in, but it wasn't our targeted demographic. So, I think we could have been successful, but not AS successful as we could potentially be where we are now.

Just to give you an idea, where I am now is in eye shot of a weekend churh, they rent a space in the preschool, the preschool, Apex Latino Affairs office, a bill pay center/Cricket dealer, insurance agency, and I have a Mexican restaurant just up the road as well as 2 taco trucks in neighboring plazas, also a Galaxy Foods near the Mexican restaurant. A wide variety of folks who are typical thrift store shoppers.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Gold in Electronics

I just called the scrap yard again, apparently that was some kind of special they were running about a year ago. Now they're scrap value is .20/pound. How heavy is a computer tower? 15 pounds, 20?

Slat wall was already up as were nails throughout the store. I had to buy slat wall shelf brackets (4=$12), waterfalls(7=$21), a slat wall shelf ($8), 2 dowels ($6) and 2 shelves (MDF from Home Depot at $10 a sheet, cut in half)

All free standing shelving, bookshelves etc. were from storage units. I'll need a bunch more hooks and shelving I suspect as we grow, but I'm hoping to pull more stuff from storage units.

I think the number 1 reason is divorce. Followed by sudden inability to pay bills (job loss, medical, etc.) death, incarceration, and lastly mismanagement of monthly bills.

Thanks! My goal is to donate a portion of the profits to a different charity each quarter. If we get super popular, it'll be a monthly donation. This way, we get new people into the shop to support their charity on a constant basis and hopefully some of those will swing back through even when their charity is not featured.

Stores / Pics of the new shop. How long we've come in just a week!

First pics of the new shop, Peak City Thrift! Still a work in progress, but we're getting there!

122,692  is nothing to a guy with as much money as Dave Has. Its funny that they would settle attorney fees with so many parts of his suite pending

My guess is the $122k hurts Dave more than you think!

I don't know that storage facilities have to have auctions if they don't want to. I called a facility a ways away and asked for an auction schedule and the guy told me that I could come by and make him an offer on his past due lockers.. Haven't made my way out there yet, but I will!
