Donations & Taxes / Re: Anyone been to Goodwill auctions?
« on: June 27, 2011, 10:34:15 PM »
Wow and I would imagine they get hoardes of costume jewelry. I would also imagine that they would semi go through it and take out the really good costume jewelry, the ones that came out of the early to mid 1900s. But would also think some of those would fall through the cracks to be put with bulk cheap costume jewelry.  That would of been my thoughts on it, but since I never been to a Goodwill auction, I cant really speak on it.

That is why its a good idea to GO THROUGH EVERYTHING. If you dont, you can almost guarantee you will lose out on some good finds.

I have a great chance in 2 days, 14 facility chain all day auction with 50+ units total. Hope the next post is about a winner!

If it is highly advertise, and with that long of a chain (caravan) going on I imagine it is. There will be alot of people. Some you will see skip some, and some you will see drop out after awhile, and others you will see come in later down the line.

I don't recommend calling the facilities if you live in an area with a population over 400,000. If you live in a smaller area, it's your best bet.

Tclane, I just have to ask why you recommend not calling when you live in an area of over 400K pop. I live in San Antonio, and there is more than that, I got my better units this way.

I wonder how much a pallet of costume jewerly would go for at Goodwill. That is my number one seller when I do yard sales, I usually sell it all off, or pretty close. 50 cents to a dollar each/pair.

Ive lost alot of units just because I didnt have enough money on hand. The most memorble one was 10x20 that was completly full, it look trashed, hell even saw some roaches run out. But I saw 3 Louis Votton purses, or how ever ya spell it, my wifes the one that noticed them, and has a good eye for genuine designer purses and knockoffs. There was also several of those wood and metal antique trunks. Of course not everyone saw all this stuff. I had $700, this place was not charging any taxes or deposits, so me and this lady went head to head for this unit, she end up getting it for $725. Had went back later to see what else she may have ROBBED from me. LOL. Several antique furnitures, jsut needed a lil polishing up, light scruffs and scratches, 5 designer purses, and a grandfather clock. Not sure what kind, didnt take a close enough look, it was way in the back, could only see the top of it. But that unit still haunts me today.

You can find a diamond wholesaler to buy the diamond, just dont be surprised not to get much for it.

There are several ways. The way I do it though is subscribe to a service that provides me with about 90% of what is going on in my area. The other 10% I call once a month to see when there next auction is and how many will be in auction.

Other ways:
1. Calling the facilities
2. Subscription Service
3. Storage Facility Websites
4. Local Newspaper(s)
5. Thrifty Nickel (or the like)
6. Auctioneers Website
7. Subscription to a Service
8. CraigsList (very few will be there, but worth looking into)

What's it Worth?? / Re: small cabinet
« on: June 26, 2011, 11:23:02 AM »
That is the way it goes sometime in auction. It all really depends on who is there, if there is not alot of people there that are interested in lets say Stamps for an example, they will go way below actual value. Other times they can go way over actual value because there is alot of people there that are interested. Best thing to do is go to auction houses regularly, and make note who is there consistently on certain days or dates, and what they are interested in. It is still a gamble, but the odds play better for you that way.

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist just got easier!!
« on: June 26, 2011, 11:20:03 AM »
They did it again, making it easier.

They just added a RENEW button on the ads, so after 48 hours, you click one button and back to the top of the list.

Also seeing they are now listing pics next to the ads you are searching.

Between them and ebay, made a pretty good living lately, Tks Craig

Ya I saw this too the other day, makes things easier where I dont have to enter a captcha, or have to wait in between post because I am posting to quickly, and that Craig cant write that fast.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: WHY are some lockers empty?
« on: June 26, 2011, 11:13:55 AM »
For the most part storage facilities do not look in the units when they place them on auction, they see the lock, tenant has not paid, so they end up auctioning it off, not knowing it was empty.
