The Treasure Chest / Re: $30 Best Buy Gift Card!

Please.  I'm not even gonna try since I know someone will wait uniil five minutes before midnight, start fifty new, and comment on every thread.

Well.....at least that was my plan.  :)

but I have to prep for this surgery and won't be around much.....oh yeah, forgot to mention that......if I'm not around after tomorrow.....I'm dead.....well, don't just assume I'm dead.  Might be a few days recovery and all.  But after....say.....Monday?  Yeah, Monday, no posts by Monday means I'm dead.

I took a gate post out while backing into a pasture with trailer.

Only accident in box truck was hitting the gutters/eve over garage door.  Friend said keep coming, keep coming, BAM!     No damage to truck but gutters were history.

Have taken out a few garbage cans but I saw them.  Was just to lazy to get out and move them....

I get that.  But to me it's like cars.
I love doing auto body.   But I hated working in a collision shop.  And the money was great.
I'd rather make less and enjoy the process.

That said, I will still grab a collision job from time to time just because I need the money.

So yeah, if I see a unit in an online auction I think I can score on I'm gonna bid.

To me it sounds like you get your high off the making money.  I get mine off the process.
Some just like to dig thru units.   And I think some just like to win a unit no matter what.....

Whatever your reason, if it makes you happy and not hurting anyone, I say do it.....and if we make money at it? All the better!

I just can't get into the online auctions
Can't see what's there.  They focus pics on big tag items and everyone bids so high....

And frankly, a huge part of the auction for me is the experience.   Being there, people.....

Like I enjoy going to the horse track.  Lot of times I don't even bet.  It's the experience.
I don't understand betting at an OTB site or online.  There's no energy to it.

The Lounge / Re: Truck rental prices
« on: February 25, 2013, 08:49:56 AM »
I typically shop around each time I have to rent a truck.

Me too.  Handy Andy's always is the lowest for huge trucks.  20'-24' for $45/day+$0.59/mile.
But they don't offer insurance other than damage to their truck and its expensive.

I always seem to end up back at uHaul because they are everywhere and you can't rent here and return there, saves some mileage/gas.

The Lounge / Truck rental prices

Went to reserve a uHaul truck and for a 10' truck they wanted $29.99!  Two miles down the road it's $19.99.

And both wanted $0.99/mile.  It's always been $0.59 to $0.79. And full insurance went up $2.

Plus, they want it back in 6hours!

I went to Penske and it was $150 for a 12' truck.  Free miles.  And you get it for 48hrs.
Insurance is spendy. $90 if you get everything.  (Which I have to since personal doesnt cover rentaltrucks.).  But they have 'online discount' and 15% AAA discount.

Who do you use and what are your rates?

My sister and nieces pretty much lay claim to any high end name brand item....real or not.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2...February, 2013

Auction #2:  I left the train and hit up a facility that is hooked up with a local auctioneer call Tillmon's Auctions.  I've heard some shady things about this auctioneer. They opened the door on the first unit (10x10) and right away the first thing that came to my mind was that it had been gone through and was staged to look appealing to the untrained eye.  All of the boxes had been gone through, there was a crappy couch, and in the front on the floor was a cheap jewelery case out in the open for everyone to see.

Yeah, been to a bunch of his.  He usually has his son bidding.

I've talked about his auctions before.  Many have looked like they've been rummaged thru.
And the strategically placed items always give me a laugh.

Picker's Paradise / Value Village picks.
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:57:39 AM »
Did well picking last night.
Did a donation and got a $3 coupon.  Went in a got:

Brand new Cuisinart rice cooker for $10, $80 retail.
A vintage Puma sweat suit for $12.99, eBay goes in the $60-$100 range.
Real, brand new with tags, Coach clutch for $19.99, retail is $120.  But it's last years line so sure you can get it online/outlet/macys for $80-ish.
Fake Coach duffle bag for$9.99.

Tho, my sister already has her eye on the Coach gear.  Note to self: hide name brand bags from sister! :-[

Best fake I've seen in a while.  CC lines up.  Lining is correct. Stitching is correct. Fasteners are brass, embossed and no weld marks.  Even leather and fabric is pretty dang close.....

But the zippers are wrong and inside label doesn't have a serial number.  Other than that you need to examine it to tell its fake.

I've done some.

I just use my automotive primer gun and pancake air compressor.
If you want to go really cheap, Harbor Frieght has a gun that for the money isn't all that bad.
I used it to stain the kitchen cabinets, worked great.   Paints decent but I'd do a practice project first.
Sort of hard to get it to lay smooth untill its dialed in and you learn the stroke.
For high end stuff I use my old Iwata gun.  But that's a $400 gun that I switched out the needle to shoot thicker paint.

I'd highly recommend a HVLP gravity feed paint gun.  Less work, easy to lean, easier to dial in....

Craigslist / Re: CL iPad app
« on: February 18, 2013, 08:16:29 PM »
Six months later......

CL App still sucks.   They just do update after update and every update breaks something else.

Now, get all the way thru, load pictures....and crashes.

Really wish they would make a decent app for the ipad!

Vehicles at Storage Auctions / Re: Totaled Vehicles
« on: February 18, 2013, 02:39:52 PM »
More often than not, more money is made parting out a vehicle than selling it in working order.

No kidding.

Had a 1993 Saturn that I blew the engine.   320,000 miles.
Blue book was like $1200 in great condition, fully loaded....mine was basic and not running.

Stripped it and sold frame to scrapper for $100.
Qt panels: $100/ea
Door panels: $40/ea
Fenders: $50/ea
Bumpers:  $75/ea
Mirrors: $25/ea
Trunk lid: $150
Airbag: $200

All told with some interior stuff, battery, cad converter.... made about $1000

Even better.  Got car wholesale for $500, needed $100 timing belt. Total: $600.
Got hit.  Insurance gave me $1400, fixed myself for $100.

So drove it for five years and made $1700!

Donations & Taxes / Re: Tax write off as business owner
« on: February 18, 2013, 02:19:28 PM »
Very well may be the way I go.  Thanks.

For 2013 its just a matter of staying on top of record keeping.
Pay my own health insurance, premiums are easy enough. But having a very simple but very expensive surgery coming up.  Gotta keep track of co-pay, co insurance, mileage.....

Saved all my items to donate for this year because my income is going to be higher.  So will be over $500 mark.  Have to keep better records...

I'm taking some classes and will (should) qualify for some deductions.

Cashing out some investments.

Making some big purchases so sales tax will be higher than IRS calculaor for my predicted income level.

I just don't want to get to next tax season and have piles of paper to go thru!   Organization is critical.

I miss Midway, now the location of a Home Depot.   That was the friendliest swap meet.   It was more of a social.    And the few times we sold there the regulars were so helpful.  Tell ya where go, best way to unload, help you unload......
