Yet it was structured accurately enough for you to recognize the parody.
Yes, Yoda would be proud.

"with power comes great responsibility" abuse it, shall not I. :)

That sentence structure barely floated with a little green alien using it !

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, this is really upsetting. It would seem counterproductive for a forum owner who was trying to grow a forum to delete content on that scale, wouldn't you agree? Perhaps this question should be redirected to a certain moderator.

Thanks for bringing it to your attention?

You mean I know more about what is going on in YOUR forum than you do?

I hope that's not the case. I wasn't suggesting that you (or anyone else) deleted that much content, but rather that he had left the forum of his own accord and having deleted himself, also deleted all his content.

Perhaps this question should be redirected to a certain moderator?

You only have one, and he's GLOBAL. I doubt he would have deleted a member without consulting you, but if I'm wrong, I have to wonder why I am not gone!

Edit:  Sorry Teacher. I forgot you were moderating too !  ;D

And it seems one of our main players is missing.

Where has member StorMe disappeared to?

His last post seems to be around mid to late August, 2013 as shown (in one instance) in the link below:

http://storageauctionforums.com/ebay/ebay-now-has-some-ways-for-sellers-to-get-negative-feedback-removed/msg29273/#msg29273

He is quoted in that and several other responses in a variety of threads, but his original posts in those and any other threads are gone. Also he does not appear in the member list.

Perhaps our fearless leader can share some insight. I have a few ideas myself, but they aren't fact-based like Travis' response might be.  ;D ;D

eBay / Dumb luck, good planning, or a little of both
« on: September 13, 2013, 08:24:48 PM »
I recently had an item on eBay which I started at $200 thinking I would get about $300 for it.

Right off the bat (day 1 of 5) it got the $200 bid. Next day it got upped to $202 by bidder #2.

A couple of days later the 2nd bidder wants to bow out ..."lost my job"...he said. He didn't know how to back out himself and I just emailed him and told him to let it ride and IF he won I would take care of it from there and would be able to offer 2nd chance to bidder #1.

He agreed that was OK.  Final 5 minutes of auction comes and bidder #3 comes in..I see his bid at $255 and when I looked at all bids, the 2nd bidder that placed a $250 bid (earlier when he placed his $202).

Final outcome the 3rd bidder gets it for his $255.  So here was my logic.

****
By allowing the defaulting buyer to coast on through to the end I hoped the first bidder would come back even to $205. It was a little more than dumb luck as there were 120 views and 10 watchers so there was a chance that ANYONE of those would beat out the deadbeat bidder.

Worked out good as it happened because the first bidder was nowhere to be seen and of the 10 watchers, only the 3rd bidder came foward. Topping it off...immediate payment !

I have visited the forum from the iPad.. I don't think there's a need to change the format for mobile tablet users. Smartphone users maybe.. but how large of a market is that? I'd think pretty small..

I have looked at the forum on my iPad and it looks fine just using Safari. Don't know about how a smartphone sees it.

I think what HGP might have meant was how many smartphone users are members (or would-be members) of this forum? Sure, smartphones are the latest development in technology but it sounds like your concern is mostly about getting dinged by Google...I assume that means they lower your ratings or something.

*****

As to an "app" for your other websites.....I use the genuine eBay app for the iPad, but of course I could use the regular Safari approach to grabbing it as well. The app for that has a really useable, clean look and is worth using. On the otherhand, I have a Craigslist app which I need to take off. I'd rather just use the Safari browswer approach to looking at my listings on cList. So it might be a toss-up for any company's app vs. regular approach.

So, one of my thoughts is that two HUGE companies like eBay and Clist might need it, but do you ? We're talking millions of users countrywide for the first two mentioned.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Screwed by bad advertisement and myself

I went to an auction where the advertised that there was a 2007 Jeep Cherokee in a locker.  Anyway I will keep you guys posted on what is happening.  Worse case scenario this is a very expensive lesson.

FYI it has 186K miles and the engine sounds like crap. :(

Sounds like your rush to get in on the action (with no real view of the car to speak of) AND the wrongfully advertised date did you in.

We all make mistakes and on the positive side this will proably be the biggest one you ever make regarding auctions..in other words you'll be more cautious going forward.

Too bad though the engine sounds like crap; you might have still done all right.

A few years ago a fellow auction buyer bought a Ford Bronco (the bigger one) that looked pretty good. He got it for $650 had a guy work on it (and botch it) and took it to another guy for the real repair. All told he had $3,000 in it by the time it was done and I think that's what he got for it, or maybe $2500 !

If you put the karma bac MM can do his little graphs in excel

Be careful what you ask for bwd....I hadn't thought of graphs, but now that you mention it a lot of people do respond better to a VISUAL rather than a DATA based set of information.  ;D

:o  You truly have too much time on your hands.

Half an hour on the laptop while watching tv. Better than just sitting there mindlessly.

Analysis is a good part of making decisions about buying and selling too; never hurts to keep the brain
cells sparking.

edit:

Another Karma factoid:

If one gave a member a negative Karma and at another time gave that member a positive Karma, it would take away the negative. The reverse was true as well.  So if "joebuyer" had a +4 and -2 rating and was then given a + by a person who had given him a - earlier, he would at that new moment be rated +5/-1.

I think that says everything I know (and you CARE to know) about the Karma program (RIP). ;D

This thread is in regard to the recently deceased Karma feature here on the forum.

If you have read the threads here at all over the last week or so (especially, Wednesday, September 11, 2013) you know what this is about.

I have placed this in the “forum suggestions” section as it doesn’t really fit anywhere else except maybe the “dump” section; several threads were hijacked big-time with Karma notations but there’s no reason to add this to any of those threads.

Here is the link to Travis’ original thread on the Karma premier:

http://storageauctionforums.com/suggestion-center/karma-added/msg29970/#msg29970

********************

Here are some interesting (to me at least) statistics in regard to the people who could actually click on the Karma buttons:

There are 102 possible people out of over 3,000 who were capable of giving Karma; this is based on the fact that one had to have 25 or more posts before being allowed to give Karma.

The names below shown in red (in 5 pics) are people I have eliminated as being possible Karma givers; this was based on what I know about their recent visitation history here. Sure, I might have made a mistake here or there, but by and large, the ones who are shown in red are probably not people who gave Karma even though they could have due to their 25 + post history.

There are 75 members highlighted in red in the list here. Many of those atained their 25+ posts over a year ago.

Subtract 75 members from 102 possible Karma givers and you have 27 members who were more likely to have given Karma and it’s possible all of them did give Karma but unlikely just from a common sense standpoint; it’s more likely a handful or two actually gave Karma (that’s 5 to 10 people) and…..

....any given Karma giving member could give one Karma an hour to the same other member. In a 16 hour day one could have given 16 positive, negative (or combination) to another member. One was not limited to how many members one could give Karma to in any given day. If you wanted to give 102 positive Karmas to 102 members you could have.

The total number of Karma given was on the order of 40 (both ways for me), 30 (both ways for Travis), 20 or so (both ways for Alloro) and maybe 5 or so (both ways) for another 10 (generous guess-timate) which is a total of 50 for that group. Total of the Karma given (in my rough estimation) was about 140 (give or take…both ways).

These are just numbers (and subject to + or – “x” percent error). You can make anything you want of them…. including nothing at all.

« on: September 11, 2013, 08:06:31 PM »
So far for the month of September crowds seem to be falling off. Of course we haven't had any of our big caravan runs yet so i'm sure the crowds will return for those. Prices seem to be coming down on certain units. It looks like the crowd has finally figured out to not bid up the common garbage, flea market, trash bag units. Those types have been getting bid down the last couple of weeks. On the other hand, any unit that looks like a potential "jackpot" are still being bid up.

Recent auction looked like this.

Unit #1 $50
Unit #2 $20
Unit #3 $100
Unit #4 no bid
Unit #5 $1500  :-\

Can't say this is a trend, but it looks like most of the current auction bidders have had their taste of losing money or working for nothing on the low end units, but the crowd isn't ready to "let" somebody else get a good unit at a good price yet, so when a nice one comes up, many go "all in".

Your usual "spot on" analysis !  That is to say, it pretty much sums up what my area is like as well...and you said it well.

Here's a smile for you !   ;D
